O. Paschal Minor1
M, b. between 1780 and 1790, d. 13 May 1845
Birth* | between 1780 and 1790 | O. Paschal Minor was born between 1780 and 1790 at Virginia.1,2 |
Anecdote | circa 1807 | According to Charles E. Caldwell family tradition is that Paschal Minor arriived in Rowan Co, NC from Virginia circa 1807. He was indentured after the death of his parents, that he ran away from his master, and that he was later given a liberal education by a kind aunt. Caldwell, a descendant of Paschel's son Augustin Washington Minor, did not indicate who may have been the parents of Paschel Minor. One possible father of Paschel would be a Thomas Minor who died in Rowan Co, NC by 3 Feb 1808 when administration on his estate was granted to Vincent Wood. However, if Paschal was married by 1808 then he would have been old enough to settle his father's estate. So why did Vincent Wood become the administor instead of the oldest son Paschal Minor? This is also contray to the tradition that Paschel was indentured after the death of his parents. Thomas Minor's other 3 children Edmond, Zerrelle & Lucinda, being underage orphans, were bound out, but no record of Paschel being bound out in Rowen Co, NC has been found.2,3 |
Marriage* | before 1808 | He married Mary 'Polly' Helmstetler, daughter of Peter Helmstetler and Nancy Vannoy, before 1808 at Rowan Co, NC.2 |
Land wit deed* | 9 December 1809 | O. Paschal Minor witnessed a deed on 9 December 1809 at Rowan Co, NC. It was on this date that Pascal Minor and Gasper Freedle witnessed a deed from John Sutton and wife Hannah to Nash Gildwell for $75 silver, (area not given) on Reeds Branch. The deed was to be effective during the natural life of Hannah Sutton. Proved by Minor at Aug Court 1819.4 |
Anecdote* | August 1819 | At the Aug 1819 Rowan County, NC Court, Pascal Minor proved a deed he witnessed on 9 Dec 1809 from John Stutton & wife Hannah to Nash Glidwell.4 |
Land mortgaged* | 23 October 1827 | He was named in deed of mortgage on 23 October 1827 at Rowan Co, NC. It was on this date that Paskel Minor gave a deed (of mortgage) to Z. Yarbrough for livestock & household furniture as security of a judgment in favor of Fathy Park to the use of J.P. Winders. If Paskel Minor pays $15.00, cost & interest within 4 months, then this obligation will be void. Further John Michael must have satisfaction of between $25.00 and $30.00 first. Witt: Wm. Wiseman, Proved March court session 1828.5 |
Census head* | 1830 | O. was listed as a head of household in the census of 1830 at Davidson Co (formerly Rowan Co), NC. He was shown as Pascal Minor a head of household, age 40-49 (b.c. 1780-1790). Anecdote* | 3 March 1844 | 3 Mar 1844 Letter to Augustine W. Minor and Elizabeth Minor of Springfield, MO from O.P. Minor and Polly Minor of Davidson Co, NC. Dear Son and Daughter-in-Law, We had concluded that you were lost and sunk in a gloomy attitude from the circumstances of your not writing before you did, but now discover the cause. We received your kind letter dated Oct 8 1843 on Saturday the third day of February, the contents of which gave us no little satisfaction in hearing an account of your journey, success, and arrival there. We will now inform that we have been much, much afflicted with sickness the fall and winter past, and from every circumstance, seemed to be past recovery, but Kind providence has brought us through the distressful scene, and at this time, are on the rise. The sickness by which we were attacked seemed to be a strange character to me; that is, commencing with a chill by which the whole body became cold and numb attending with tormenting pains in various parts of the body which would pervade the whole system in a few days, and almost take life. It was also attended with an unusual degree of costiveness which with much difficulty was removed by the Doctor. I had a slight attack myself. Zebulun and Phoebe were taken at the same time nearly, and hardly could recover, and for some length of time seemed as though the cases were remediless, but by divine mercy, they recovered after much suffering. The case with Phoebe continued about two or three weeks and Zebulun nearly the whole winter, but return our most devoted thanks to the Almighty Preserver of health and sustenance of our lives for his guardian care, and protection to whom be honor and praise forever ascribed. We were apprehensive that you and your father-in-law and family did not fancy the country to which you went but your letter imports to the contrary. According to information, thereby, you are very well situated with the exception of timber which I suppose may be dispensed with for the sake of superior advantages in almost every other respect. You stated in your letter an account of an unbounded and luxuriant range in your section of the country which is almost a five fold advantage to this country. Also of superior quality soil, another peculiar advantage; of fine Free Stone spring water, of the Plentitude of every species of grain; of great abundance of vegetables, etc., all of which are excellent things, but all joined together are not equal to content. Now if you altogether are enjoying contentment, you are certainly happy, but if now how can there be any peace. Therefore, my advice to you if you find yourself in a contented condition or can be reconciled thereto, to go on, make your necessary improvement as fast as possible, but if not, to try some other section of the country or return to this; which if you let me know, I will meet you this side of the Mississippi River, in order to help you. I suppose you are somewhat consoled on the account of having neighbors of old acquaintance, and immediately from the same parts that you were, which is certainly to be preferred to strangers with that and some other prospects of favorable view may somewhat alleviate and reconcile a person in such a condition. Your letter informs us that your father-in-law lost 3 children on his way thither, which must have been a very trying circumstance in a strange country, and at such distance asunder, which rendered it inconvenient for one to discharge the offices toward them they naturally wish. We have an excellent season again throughout the whole summer. Crops are very good. There were no failures of any kind. Grain is quite low; cotton is on the rise at present. It has pleased God, in the dispensation of his providence to call a great number of our fellow creatures to their final homes! DEATH, the terrific monster, is abroad in the land! Among those who departed this life are Richmond Matteau and his son Franklin. They died in a few days of each other. Franklin died of the Scarlet Fever, his father the Pleurisy. But, oh, death does not stop here! It has penetrated through every part of our section of country, not sparing either sea, order, or condition among whom are many of our acquaintances, to-wit: James Park, Richard Owen, Nancy Miller, Nancy Myers, Henry Grimes, Old Wm. Cornish, Wilee Ellis of the Forks, besides many others that cannot be named. Also, I was informed that about 40 persons died last summer in the Riley Settlement. In all probability, hundreds have died in this country since last spring. All our connections are in Common health at this time. Not withstanding have been very sick at times in the fall, and since. John has bought land near old Wm. Foster and is living on it. At present, he and family are in Common health. We will add no more, but remain your Loving Father and Mother, "till Death"!" |
