Eunice Short1
F, b. circa 1766
Birth* | circa 1766 | Eunice Short was born circa 1766 at Worcester Co, MD. Eunice Short being a daughter of Jacob Short and his wife Eunice 'Nicey' is based on several secondary facts, since she was not named in his will. 1st - a possible reason for not being named in his will was the fact that she was probably then married to her first husband Wingate West and did not need an inheritance. 2nd - she was named after her mother who had a fairly unusual name 'Eunice' nicknamed 'Nicey.' 3rd - on 21 Nov 1796 when she (as Eunice West), was granted administration on her husband Wingate West's estate, her uncle Shadrack Short was security for her. 4th - on 9 May 1813 it was her brother Noah Short Sr. (who was living near her and her second husband Purnel Carey in the 1820 census) who witnessed a deed of gift to her daughter Ginsey H. Carey from Purnel Carey's mother Hannah (Collins) Carey. 5th - in 1807 the estate of Job Short was distributed to 7 unnamed heirs and there was no widow. Since his brother Crawford was already dead, the 7 living siblings would have to include Eunice Short West Carey.3,4 |
Marriage* | circa 1785 | She married Wingate West I, son of Thomas West I and Rachel (-----), circa 1785.5 |
Married Name | circa 1785 | As of circa 1785,her married name was West. |
Administrator* | 21 November 1796 | Eunice was named as administrator of an estate on 21 November 1796 at Sussex Co, DE. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Wingate West was granted to Eunice West with Shadrack Short security. (Note: Shadrack Short was her uncle.)4 |
Marriage* | after 21 November 1796 | She married Purnel Carey, son of Ebenezer Carey and Hannah Collins, after 21 November 1796.1,6 |
Married Name | after 21 November 1796 | As of after 21 November 1796,her married name was Carey. |
Anecdote* | 1807 | The distribution of the estate of Job Short went to 7 (unnamed) heirs and there was no widow. (NOTE: Since his brother Crawford Short died by 1801 that would leave 7 siblings including Eunice Short West Carey.)7 |
Est Settm't Husb's* | 17 March 1813 | Eunice Short was named in her husband's estate settlement on 17 March 1813 at Sussex Co, DE. The administrative account on the estate of Wingate West was submitted by Purnal Carey & his wife Eunice.6 |
Est Settm't Husb's | 27 July 1818 | She was named in her husband's estate settlement on 27 July 1818 at Sussex Co, DE. The administrative account on the estate of Wingate West was submitted by Purnal Carey & his wife Eunice.6 |

Signed and sworn in open court 21 February 1682/83, by Penellope (T) Jenkins.
