Land acq'd by mar.* | circa 1722 | He acquired land by marriage circa 1722 at tract N114, Nassawadox Neck, south of Jamesville, Northampton Co, VA. In 1696 John Reade (wife Hannah) left his land to his sons Thomas and Ishmael, after providing in other ways for his eldest son and heir-at-law John. In spite of that, in 1731 the son John Reed of Somerset sold his right to the revision interest in the land to Joseph Backwell of Dorset (Dorchester Co, MD). In 1748 a suit was brought to upset that sale, on the contention that although Ishmael had died without issue, it was not until after the death of his brother Thomas, who had reached his age of 21 and had issue before his decease. The issue was a daughter Sarah who married Andrew Turner and they recovered the land. Apparently they disposed of more acreage then called for by the patent.4 |
Marriage* | circa 1723 | He married Sarah Read, daughter of Thomas Read (Reade) and Elizabeth Johnson, circa 1723 at Northampton Co, VA.4 |
Land sold* | 1723 | Andrew (of Rich II) Turner sold land in 1723 at tract N114, Nassawadox Neck, south of Jamesville, Northampton Co, VA. Andrew and Sarah Turner sold 75 acres of this tract to John Bryant and 50 acres more, two years later. Nothing more was found about Bryant and the title perhaps reverted to the Turners. (NOTE: Whitelaw evidently didn't know that John Bryant died in 1728 and left a daughter Alice and that John Furbush left a will in 1737 leaving John Furbush Turner, son of Andrew, 1/2 of the estate that fell to him by the death of Alice Bryant.)4 |
Land sold | 1729 | He sold land in 1729 at tract N114, Nassawadox Neck, south of Jamesville, Northampton Co, VA. Andrew & Sarah Turner sold 50 acres to Nathaniel Savage and 50 acres more later in the year. This was the east end of Sarah's inheritance from her father Thomas Read and was on both sides of the present neck road. In 1754 Nathaniel and Henrietta Savage sold the 100 acres to David Raws (Ross), and in 1768 he left to his son John and then to his son Ishmael. He did not mention a wife, so she may have died, but she had been Tamar, the daughter of Andrew and Sarah Ross(sic) (Read) Turner, which accounts for the name Ishamael being continued in this family. In 1778 it was land which Ishmael and Rosanna Ross exchanged with John F. Turner for the land to the west of it. In 1799 John F. and Bridget Turner deeded to George Turner, and in 1808 he and his wife Leurancy Turner sold to Thomas James Jr.5 |

Land cause* | 12 April 1748 | He was named in a land cause on 12 April 1748 at tract N114, Nassawadox Neck, south of Jamesville, Northampton Co, VA. In the Ejectment Proceedings of John Blackwell vs. Thomas Marshall & Andrew Turner, a jury was impaneled and returned the following verdict: We find that John Read, late of Northampton dec'd, was possessed of the land in question in fee simple; on the 3 March 1695, we find that the said John Read made his last will in writing, which was duly proved in the Court of Northampton on 30 Nove 1696, and hereto annexed, in these words, to-wit: (abstract) To son John and son Major my land in Gilford Creek containing 115 acres, and should either die in their minority the survivor to enjoy the whole plantation, but should both live to be equally divided between them. To sons Thomas and Ishmale plantation were I now live, and should either of them die the survivor to enjoy the whole, but should both live to be equally divided between them. To wife Hannah Read the balance of my estate during her natural life or widowhood, but should she marry to be divided between my wife and two daughters, Mary and Hannah. Wife Extr. In which said will he devised the land in question in these words, to-wit: "I have given unto my sons Thomas and Ishmael this plantation I now live upon, to them and to their heirs, forever, but should it please God that either Thomas or Ishmael should die in their minority, them my will is that the survivor shall enjoy, but if both my sons live, then this plantation to be equally divided between them." We find that Ishmael survived Thomas and died without issue; we find that John Read, eldest son and heir at law to John Read, the testator, by his deed of bargain and sale bearing the date 29 Jan 1730, and duly acknowledged with livery & seizen on 9 Feb 1730, in the Court of Northampton County, and here to annexed, did convey the lands in question to one Joseph Blackwell, father of the plantiff, which deed is as follows, to-wit: Articles of agreement made and concluded on 29 January 1730, between the parties following, to-wit: John Read of Somerset County, in Maryland, of the one part and Joseph Blackwell, of Dosset (Dorchester) County, Maryland of the other part ----- all my right to the reversion of a certain parcel of land, by estimation 150 acres, situate, lying and being in Northampton County, Virginia, in Nassawadox Neck ----- we find that John Blackwell is the surviving heir of Joseph Blackwell, purchaser of the land in question; we find that John Blackwell, is about 21 years and 7 months of age; we find that John Read, the vendor of the lands in question to John Blackwell, lived out of the government from the time of his father's death, or soon after, til 29 January 1730, at which time he sold the lands in question to the aforesaid Joseph Blackwell, and soon after returned to Maryland, and that Ishmael died in his minority; that he survived his brother Thomas who died after he arrived to the age of 21 years, and that Thomas left issue.7,4 |
