Anecdote* | 18 July 1839 | On 18 July 1839 in Accomack County, VA there was a chancery suit of Ann Bonnwell &c vs. John G. Joynes &c. It was ordered that John Bull Jr. one of the defendants in this cause pay unto the hands of Thomas R. Joynes who is appointed a receiver for that purpose, all the moneys in his hands arising out of the Revolutionary Services of Thomas Bonnwell to be loaned out by the said Joynes for the benefit of the parties in this cause. John Bull Jr. was the husband of Betsey Bonnwell who was the daughter of Robert Bonnewell son of Betsey Bonnwell who was named as an heir of Thomas Bonwell in 1831 (Nottingham Soldiers & Sailors, p. 29) and was administrator of Thomas Bonnwell's (Rev. War) estate in 1835. For some reason Thomas (son of Betsey Bonnewell) is not shown in the order from Nottingham in 1831 as a son of Betsey. It is assumed that the reason he was not listed was that he had left Acc Co and they either overlooked him or did not now what became of him and that was the basis for the chancery case, thus proving he was a son of the Betsy who was named a relative of the Thomas Bonnwell, an officer in the Virginia State Navy.5 |
