Maj. Gen. David Johnson Jr.1
M, b. 29 January 1804, d. 9 April 1881
Birth* | 29 January 1804 | Maj. Gen. David Johnson Jr. was born on 29 January 1804 at Bulloch Co, GA.1 |
Anecdote* | | He was born in Bulloch County, now Emanuel County, Georgia, the 7th child of 11 born to David and Martha. He grew up on the 15 mile creek, waters of the big Ohoopee River. When he was 20 years old he moved with his father and family to what is now Clinch County, GA. They lived there for about 3 years when the moved to Leon County, FL, then a territory. After helping his father get settled in Leon County, he moved back to Irwin County, now Lowndes County, in 1828. He married circa 1828 and settled near where Valdosta now stands. He married Nancy 'Mary Ann' Burnett, daughter of John and Molsy Sheppard Burnett. They moved back to Ware, now Clinch County, GA and lived there the remainder of his life. He fought through the Indian War of 1836 and won a Commission of Captain. He was noted for his coolness and bravery. Captain David Johnson's Brigade of Georgia Militia was ordered into Federal Service of the United States by Governor Charles S. McDonald from the first day of November to the thirty-first day of December 1834. He was commissioned Major General of the 2nd Brigade, 6th Division of the State Militia on 16 December 1850. He resigned 22 February 1861. He felt very strongly over his failure to keep the Militia under his command active although the same condition existed all over the State in the State Militia, so when the Civil War and possible invasion seemed imminent and the State Militia was not ready for the emergency, General Johnson felt like he was partly to blame, which of course was not true. General Johnson lost two sons in the Civil War; Bryant died in the hospital in Savannah, and William died from gun shot wounds in a hospital at Stanton, VA on 22 May 1864. His other three sons served also: Rowan B. as Captain, David H. as Lieutenant, and Private Joseph B. in Co. H 29th Georgia Infantry. General Johnson survived the war and lived until he was 77. An article in The Valdosta Times on 20 May 1876 reported the General accidently shot himself in his right hand and left knee after returning from a hunt. The Valdosta Times of 23 April 1881 reported his death on 9 April 1881. "He left an aged wife, six children and a host of devoted friends to mourn his departure to that other world. The writer knew him well and knew him to possess a heart filled with the milk of human kindness and a head stored with that ripeness of judgment."2 |
Marriage* | circa 1830 | He married Nancy 'Mary Ann' Burnett, daughter of John Burnett and Molsy Sheppard, circa 1830.1 |
Death* | 9 April 1881 | Maj. Gen. David Johnson Jr. died on 9 April 1881 at Clinch Co, GA, at age 77.1 |

David Johnson (R.S.)1
M, b. 1765, d. 14 April 1834
Birth* | 1765 | David Johnson (R.S.) was born in 1765 at Lorens Co, SC.1 |
Anecdote* | 1776 | In 1732, a colony of Scotch-Irish under the leadership of Roger Gordon settled about the King's tree on Black River on lands now within the immediate vicinity of Kingstree, South Carolina. Making up this colony of forty were the families of the following men: Roger Gordon..., David Johnson....etc. This colony came up Black River and disembarking from their vessel at Brown's Ferry, blazed their way through the forests along what is now the Kingstree-Georgetown road to the King's tree. These were the first settlers in Williamsburg Township. (Page 10, History of Williamsburg.) Also mentioned on Page 21 and 22, Chapter III, heads of families who had settled in Williamsburg Township up to 1737: William Johnson, Joseph Johnson and David Johnson ... The greater number of these families had lived in Ireland for many years before coming to America. They had migrated from England and Scotland to Ireland on account of fair promises on the part of the English King. The Johnson's were of English blood and this David Johnson was probably the grandfather of our David Johnson who married Martha Hardman in Effingham County, Georgia, ca 1790. The Hardymans (Hardeman) came from Virginia to South Carolina, St. David's Parish of old Cheraw. Elizabeth Johnson, David's sister, married Joseph Hardman, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hardaman ca. 1781. Page 245 of "History of the Old Cheraws" by Rev. Alexander Gregg, DD shows William Johnson, Ensign, Captain Thomas Hardyman, and Ensign Joseph Hardyman in September 1775 being commissioned as Officers in Colonel Powell's Regiment of Militia for duty in the Revolutionary War. David Johnson born ca 1760-65, served in the Revolutionary War under Colonel Philemon Waters troops, Colonel Middleton's Regiment, and General Sumter's Brigade for 10 months until the end of the war. See Stub Entries to Endents for Revolutionary War Claims, Book L-N No. 512 Lib. M. His signature was compared to a bond in Bulloch County Court, 1810 term of Superior Court. Hustus Studstill and Josiah Sirmans were indicted in a case (later dismissed) and David Johnson and Jonathan Studstill were sureties. This was an original signature on the bond and it was the same as signature on Indent Record for Revolutionary War. David and Martha Hardaman Johnson settled on the 15 Mile Creek which was a part of the Big Ohoopee River in Bulloch County, now Emanuel County. They settled there in ca 1794 after their first land grant from Washington County, now Emanuel County. The census for 1840 shows David and Martha Johnson in Emanuel as follows: 2 males under age 10, 2 males age 10-16, 1 male over age 45, 1 female under age 10, 1 female over age 45, 2 female slaves & 2 male slaves. Anecdote* | | The "Old Rock House" was a well know landmark from its completion in 1860 until torn down in 1928. This large, square, two story house of Gen. Joseph B. Johnson was made from stone quarried from his land and took one hundred slave artisans a year to complete. It was the center of his large plantation. A great ball was given for the soldiers entering the Confederate Army and it was the scene of many social and political activities. Gen. Johnson was born in Clinch County, GA 7 April 1816, later moved to Leon County, Territory of Florida. His wife, Patience Ponder Johnson, was born in Leon Co, Florida Territory, 16 May 1821. They moved to Texas in 1848, living in Tyler County and near Bryan before moving to Freestone County in late 1854. Gen. Johnson served in the Indian Wars in both Georgia and Florida. He received his appointment as Captain, 2 March 1837, signed by the Governor of the Territory of Florida, was commissioned a Major, 25 August 1846 by the Governor of the State of Florida. In Texas he was commissioned Colonel of the Freestone Regiment #1 of the 19th Brigade of Texas, 2 November 1861 and commissioned Brigadier General of the same Brigade 1 August 1863 by Gov. Lubbock, Texas then being a part of the Confederacy. Gen. Johnson was a Royal Arch Mason. He was the first Master of the Texas State Grange, a farm organization to promote agricultural education, cooperative buying of supplies and cooperative selling of farm products. He was interested in local issues and did his share as County Commissioner in maintenance of public roads, courthouse grounds, care of destitute and orphans of the County. He gave land for a "Grange Hall" in his community for meetings and the community became known as Grange Hall. He gave land for a cemetery for the Negroes of the community which is still used today. He was interested in education. His two daughters attended Fairfield Female College, and Alice also attended Westminster Presbyterian College at Tehuacana, Texas, forerunner of Trinity University. Shortly before Gen. Johnson's death, he dissolved a partnership and hid the gold coins in the rocks of a downstairs fireplace. When the hiding place was discovered, Gen. Johnson said he would have to hide them elsewhere. He was seen to go over the hill with a huge black washpot containing the coins, and to come back sometime later with the empty washpot. A few days later he suffered a stroke and kept trying to tell the children something, but they could not understand him. They supposed he was trying to tell them the location of the coins. In the years following, many fortune hunters came to the property to dig, and report has it that al least ____________________________ miles northward of Fairfield near the location of the Rock House. Gen. Johnson and his wife, Patience, had 6 children, 2 dying in infancy and early adulthood, but descendants of only one, Alice, remain in Freestone County. The other 4 children of Gen. Johnson are Betty, who married Maj. William M. Hines and at his death married Dr. William F. Moore, a dentist; Edgar, who first married Ella Sneed and at her death married Minnie Blanch Milner; Billie; and Alice Virginia, who married Dr. William N. Sneed on 13 October 1875. Six children were born to Dr. and Mrs. Snead: Burta Sneed Davis, Dr. William N. Sneed Jr., Dr. Jim Sneed, Ella Sneed Fryer, Alice Sneed Hunter and Martha. Alice Sneed Hunter was educated at Chappell Hill Female College and West Texas State at Canyon. She also earned a teachers certificate in Wyoming. She was married to Luther Lincoln Hunter of Lincoln, Missouri, 27 March 1918, and they live in Wyoming ten years before moving to Texas. Their two children are Ruth Virginia Hunter and William Luther Macksfield 'Max' Hunter of Fairfield. Max Hunter is married to the former Sara Ashcraft of Greenwood, Mississippi.2 |

Capt. Thomas Hardyman (R.S.)1
M, b. 15 October 1730, d. 1791
Birth* | 15 October 1730 | Capt. Thomas Hardyman (R.S.) was born on 15 October 1730 at Virginia. There is no proof that this Capt. Thomas Hardyman (1730-1791) was the son of John (52) Hardyman (1686-1739) and his wife Henrietta Maria Taylor of Prince George Co, Virginia. He is not shown as their son by Mr. Dorman in Adventurers of Purse and Person, Vol. 1, Epes family. However, his family Bible does show the name was spelled Hardyman and he was born in Virginia and this could be his possible parents, since John (52) Hardyman died without a will by 13 Mar 1738/39 when Ann Hardyman, one of his orphans, chose a guardian. Capt. Thomas Hardyman would have been only about 8 years old at that time and would have been too young (under age 14) to have chosen a guardian.2,3 |
