Death* | 12 January 1910 | She died on 12 January 1910 at 1315 P Street, Northwest, Washington, DC, at age 66. Lucy Willard, widow of Caleb C. Willard, died last week at the age of 80(sic) or more, in her home in Washington City. She was the Daughter of John S. Parker and Annie E. Parker of Eastville. She was born 3 Aug 1843. She was survived by sister, Miss Nannie Parker. The Washington Herald, 13 Jan 1910 - MRS. WILLARD DEAD - Stricken at the Family Residence in P Street, a member of a colonial family, a prominent Figure in Church, Philanthropic, and Social Life of Washington for a period of more then Thirty Years - Leaves Valuable Estate Inherited from Husband. Lucy Parker Willard, widow of C.C. Willard, died yesterday morning at 3 o'clock at the family residence, north-east corner of 14th and P streets, Northwest, after an illness of several weeks. Ten days ago her condition became alarming. She gradually lost strength and vitality and her death was expected. The best physicians of Washington were called, but medical science could not save her. Mrs. Willard had resided in the National Capital for the last thirty-one years. She was a prominent figure in the church, philanthropic, and social life of the city. She was a native of Eastville, VA, where she was born in 1844. She was a Miss Parker, member of the well-known and wealthy colonial family of that name, owning large plantation estates on the Eastern Shore. In 1879 she was married at Eastville, VA to C.C. Willard, then a widower with one daughter, Miss Kate Willard, now the wife of Surg. J.C. Boyd, medical director, United States Navy, residing at 1836 Sixteenth Street, Northwest. Mrs. Willard reared her step-daughter with every care and affection of a mother. Mrs. Boyd and her two children, grand-children of the deceased, Alice Willard Boyd and Walter Willard Boyd, are the sole heirs to the vast estate left by Mrs. Willard and her husband, who died in 1906, leaving property in the District, including the Ebbitt House and all the property on the south side of F street, between 13th and 14th streets, other property on the north side of the street and property in Virginia. It is estimated to be worth about $3,000,000. Mrs. Willard, prior to her marriage to Mr. Willard, was prominent in the exclusive social and literary circles of her section. She was a distant relative of the Lee family, the Upshurs, and other well known families of the Old Dominion. After her marriage in 1879, she came to Washington with her husband, since which time she had been identified with the philanthropic work of the Episcopal Church, in which she had been reared and to which she gave much of her time and means in doing good. She was a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church, being one the most devout communicants of that parish, taking a lively interest in all that had to do with the upholding of the congregation. She gave liberally to all church charities and was a frequent contributor to civic causes. She maintained an elegant home, dispensing hospitality to her friend in keeping with the history of her long line of Virginia ancestors, always discouraging publicity of her social entertainment and charitable work. While coming from stock of the colonial period, antedating the Revolutionary War, in which her ancestors won distinction for patriotic devotion in the cause of independence under Washington and bravery on the field of battle and eminent services in the halls of state, entitling her to membership in the women's patriotic societies of the Revolutionary period, she never connected herself with any of those bodies. She was not a member of any of the popular women's clubs, made up of the society women of the city. Arrangements were completed last night for the funeral, except that the list of pallbearers had not been determined upon. The obsequies will be held at the family home, 14th and P streets, northwest, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Randolph H. McKim, rector of Epiphany Church, will officiate. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery will be private.6,7 |
