Robert (of Constable Tho) Hickman1
M, b. circa 1774, d. between 1820 and 1830
Birth* | circa 1774 | Robert (of Constable Tho) Hickman was born circa 1774 at Accomack Co, VA.1 |
Land inherited* | 10 February 1798 | He inherited land on 10 February 1798 at tract A116, Rue, Accomack Co, VA. Edward Hickman's children were named in the division of his land in settling his estate. The northern 56 acres was divided into 3 portions, as was the southern 50 acre strip. Son Richard received 17 1/2 acres of the 56 acres, son George received 18 1/2 acres of the 56 acres, and Stephen & Robert Hickman jointly received 20 acres of the 56 acres and it is assumed they were the sons of a dec'd child who had died before Edward. The 56 acres that were divided into these 3 tracts eventually became owned by Zepporah Ann Hickman Morten, seemingly the orphan daughter of Richard Hickman and were sold by her and her husband Thomas Morten of Somersette County, New Jersey, to James Rew of Accomack County in 1830 (Acc Deeds 1828-1830, p. 446). Henry Hickman received 15 acres of the southern 50 acre tract and the deed names his wife Scissey Hickman. This was probably Lissa Bayly that Henry is recorded as marrying in 1789. Thomas Hickman received 16 acres of the southern 50 acre tract and Dennis Hickman received the remaining acres of the southern 50 acre tract although his deed is not included with the 5 recorded in the division of 1798. Dennis & wife Bridget signed the other deeds and the next year (1799) they made a deed selling his brother Thomas Hickman's 18 1/2 acres for 55 pounds "The whole that fell to him by the death of his father" (Acc District Court Wills & Deeds, 1789-1799, p. 445). In 1806 Dennis and Bridget signed another deed selling Thomas (of Edward) the 3 acres of land that was Dennis' share of his late brother Henry Hickman's land.3 |
Marriage | before 1804 | He married Elizabeth 'Betsy' (-----) before 1804 at Accomack Co, VA. Robert Hickman's marriage date is not recorded, but he was unmarried in 1798 when he signed deeds on the division of his father's land and had married by 1804 when he sold land and a wife Betsy joined in signing the deed..4 |
Will - Father's* | 7 May 1806 | Robert was named in his father's will on 7 May 1806 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as my son Robert Hickman in the will of Thomas Hickman, wife Laney.1 |
Land sold* | 1808 | He sold land in 1808 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Robert Hickman and wife Elizabeth sold to George Miles for 140 pounds the 44 acres he inherited from his father. His brother Asa Hickman bought 38 acres of this land in 1809. It was located southeast and adjacent to land Thomas Hickman B.S. left to his son Elijah Hickman.5 |
Census head* | 1810 | Robert was listed as a head of household in the census of 1810 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Robert Hickman a head of household age 26-45 with 4M0-10.6 |
Census head | 1820 | Robert was listed as a head of household in the census of 1820 at Accomack Parish, Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Robert Hickman a head of household, age 26-45 (b.c. 1775-1794). Listed with him were 2M0-10, 2M10-16, 2M16-18, 2M16-26, 1F0-10, 1F26-45. (NOTE: Because of the double counting of males age 16-18 & 16-26, there were probably 6 under age males and 1 under age female.) This seems to be the last time he was shown in the Federal census of Accomack Co, VA.6,7 |
Death* | between 1820 and 1830 | He died between 1820 and 1830 at Accomack Parish, Accomack Co, VA. There is no Robert Hickman in the 1830 census, but there is an Elizabeth Hickman shown as head of HH, age 30-40 (b.c. 1790-1800 & about 10 years too young for her). Listed with her were 1M5-10, 2M10-15, & 1F15-20 & no slaves.7,8 |

Thomas (of Edward) Hickman (blacksmith1
M, b. circa 1770, d. 30 July 1827
Birth* | circa 1770 | Thomas (of Edward) Hickman (blacksmith was born circa 1770 at Accomack Co, VA.3 |
Marriage* | circa 1795 | He married Lucretia Middleton (Middleton?) circa 1795 at Accomack Co, VA. There is not record of Thomas Hickman's marriage, but he is joined by wife Lucretia in signing the deeds that divided his father's property in 1798. The only inference to her maiden name is a deed in 1807, in which Thomas Hickman B.S. and wife Lucretia join William Middleton in selling land to John Cropper (Acc Deeds 1804-1807, p. 720). This implies that she was a Middleton.1 |
Land inherited* | 10 February 1798 | Thomas (of Edward) Hickman (blacksmith inherited land on 10 February 1798 at tract A116, St. George Parish, Accomack Co, VA. In 1806 Dennis and Bridget signed another deed selling Thomas (of Edward) the 3 acres of land that was Dennis' share of his late brother Henry Hickman's land.3 |
Land bought* | between 1799 and 1811 | He bought land between 1799 and 1811 at tract A116, Rue, Accomack Co, VA. Thomas Hickman bought the adjoining 18 1/2 acre tract from his brother Dennis. His brother Henry died without heirs in 1803 and Thomas inherited 3 of his 15 acres. He bought 3 additional acres of Henry's land from Stephen and Robert Hickman in 1804. Dennis sold him his 3 acres in 1806 and in 1811, Thomas bought from brother Richard Hickman 6 1/4 acres of the same land. (Acc Deeds 1810-1812, p. 355). This last purchase included brother George's 3 acres since he had died in 1804 and left his property to Richard Hickman. So by 1811 Thomas Hickman (B.S.) owned the entire 50 acre tract his father had purchased from William and Elizabeth Miles in 1754. In earlier deeds he is spoken of as Thomas Hickman of Edward, but by 1807 he is called Thomas Hickman, Black Smith and the letters B.S. follow his name in Accomack County records until his death in 1827. (NOTE: Normally B.S. stands for Bay Side.)1 |
Census head* | 1800 | Thomas was listed as a head of household in the census of 1800 at Accomack Parish, Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as Thomas Hickman a head of household.4 |
Census head* | 1810 | Thomas was listed as a head of household in the census of 1810 at St. George Parish, Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as Thomas Hickman a head of household.4 |

Thomas Hickman B.S. bought 36 acres and 2 perches in St. George Parish from John and Catherine Cropper for 312 pounds, 1 shilling & 1 penny half penny (Acc Deeds District Court 1807-1830, p. 195). This deed show this land bordered by land Thomas already owned and by William Middleton and John Cropper.1 |

To Elizabeth & Mary Stephens the land where my son Thomas Hickman lives which I bought of John Cropper except a strip lying between Thomas R. Joynes & my son Thomas Hickman which I give to said Thomas & if both Elizabeth & Mary Stephens die before arrival at age & without heirs, then to my 3 sons Elijah, Edward & Thomas Hickman. Also to Elizabeth & Mary Stephens my Negro boy Ephraim & girl Elsa & ... To my son Elijah Hickman the land where he now lives & 26 acres which I bought of William Copes. To Edward Hickman the land where he lives ... & $110. To my son Thomas Hickman the balance of my land where I now live. To son Elijah Hickman $10 to go against the strip of land that I give to my son Thomas Hickman. Son Thomas Hickman Extr. Witt: James Lewis, James Powell & Thomas W. Blackstone.
