Biography* | Mr. Claude W. Drewer, Sr., a highly respected citizen of Saxis, VA, died Wednesday afternoon, 23 Apr 1958, at 4:00 p.m. at the Nassawadox Hospital. Mr. Drewer succumbed after a brief and sudden illness at the age of fifty-four. He was born and reared in Saxis, VA, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd M. Drewer. A man of fine character and personality, he had many devoted friends. He had been an agent for the Home Benefical Life Insurance Co., for over eighteen years. Survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 24 Apr 1958). | |

Anecdote* | 11 July 1931 | On 8 July 1931 Gay Evans, little daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Evans, met with a peculiar accident Saturday, July 4th, when she fell head first down a 5 ft well in the yard of L.M. Drewer. There was some water in the well, but as she was conscious when she hit the bottom, she quickly turned herself around and stood up in the water. William Drewer was held by his feet and formed a human ladder to get her from the well. She was unhurt, to the pleasure of her many friends, and is none the worse for the experience.4 |

Born on September 1, 1931 in Saxis, VA, he was the son of the late Claude Wesley Drewer Sr. and the late Hilda Catherine Drewer. Claude graduated from Atlantic High School and started as a waterman on the Harvey A. Drewer buy boat. He eventually moved to Wilmington, DE and became a short order cook. In 1956 he started his career with Moore Business Forms in Snow Hill as a press operator until becoming a stock clerk, retiring in 1993 with 37 years of service. He was a longtime member of Bates Memorial United Methodist Church. His hobbies included, fishing, golfing and motorcycle riding. Claude is survived by his wife of 47 years, Vicki Hancock Drewer; one daughter, Nicole Andrews and her husband Bobby of Salisbury, MD; one grandson, Addison Andrews of Salisbury, MD; one nephew, David Drewer of Dundalk, MD; a very special friend who he called his brother, David Trader, who everyone knows as "Tarr Heel" and many extended family members including cousins and his many friends. In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by two brothers, Randolph and Charles Drewer. A graveside service, officiated by Pastor Josh Berry and Rev. Mark Avens, will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Bates Memorial Methodist Cemetery, 409 W. Federal Street, Snow Hill, MD 21863. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salisbury Zoo Commission, P.O. Box 2979, Salisbury, MD 21801. John Ellis Drewer Sr., better known as Jack, 78, husband of Joan Jester Drewer and a resident of Belle Haven, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, April 18, 2009 after a short illness. He was the son of the late John Henry Drewer and Mildred Drummond Drewer. Mr. Drewer was a farmer all his life, still in the process of preparing the land for spring planting. Other than his love for farming the land, it gave him much joy to share white potatoes and sweet potatoes with family and friends. He was a member of Craddockville United Methodist Church, treasurer of Craddockville Methodist Men’s Club, member of the Virginia Sweet Potato Association, Pungoteague Ruritan Club and Exmore Moose Lodge. He graduated from Central High School and Goldey-Beacom Business School. Other than his wife, Jack is survived by two children, Gayle D. Shaw and her husband David of Craddockville, Virginia and John Ellis Drewer Jr. of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Troy Jay Farlow and his wife Dr. Laura Kerbin of Williamsburg, Virginia and Amanda Drewer Shaw of Charleston, South Carolina; a sister, Anne D. Sterling and her husband Bill of Cedarview, Virginia; three nieces and four nephews; eleven great nieces and nephews, recently a great-great nephew; and many special cousins. He was predeceased by a brother and business partner, Newman Henry Drewer. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at Fairview Lawn Cemetery Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Kenneth Armstrong officiating. She had resided at the Hermitage of the Eastern Shore for the last four years. Frances was born in Norfolk, VA on November 25, 1917 to Andrew Bernard and Rosa Hogwood Rusher. She grew up in Portsmouth, VA, where she later met her husband William on a blind date. He was an insurance agent assigned to the Portsmouth area. They were married in 1940 and soon afterward, William was transferred to an office in Salisbury, MD. After living in Salisbury briefly, they were able to relocate to Onancock, VA. Frances was a very devoted wife, a loving mother to her four children and a dear friend to many. She loved baking and was well-known for her “Hot Milk” cakes, of which she made many. Some of her favorite pastimes in later years were knitting and crocheting. Many family members, friends and lots of babies were blessed with her beautiful afghans. She loved spending time with her family and friends and nothing made her happier than feeding them well and making sure they were well-cared for. Frances is survived by her daughter, Rosalie Daley and husband, Bill of Onancock; her granddaughter, Virginia (Jenny) Taylor Haga and her daughter, Virginia Leigh of Lynchburg, VA; her granddaughter, Beth Wheeler and husband, Wayne, and their two sons, Michael and wife Sarah and son Evan, and Benjamin Wheeler, all of North Chesterfield, VA; her grandson, Christopher Drewer and wife, Blythe and their daughter, Shea of Nottingham, MD; her grandson, Christopher Daley and wife, Jessica of Onancock; her great-granddaughters, Delaney Taylor and Sydney Taylor of Snow Hill, MD and Linsey Otto of Virginia Beach, VA; her daughter-in-law, Isabelle Drewer of Newport News, VA; and several dear cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, Frances was predeceased by her two sons, William T. Drewer, Jr. and George B. Drewer; daughter, Irene E. Drewer; grandson Brian T. Taylor; and son-in-law, Eldred Thomas Taylor. She was also predeceased by her two brothers, Dr. William D. Rusher and his dear wife, Helen, and Andrew B. Rusher, Jr. Frances graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA and worked for C & P Telephone Company after graduation. Her dream as a young woman was to become a nurse. While she was never able to pursue that professionally, she lovingly cared for many family members and friends throughout her life. Frances was a member Market Street United Methodist Church and, in her earlier years, she was an active member and former president of the Soroptimist Club of Accomack County. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Hermitage of the Eastern Shore and the Fourth Floor medical staff and the Hospice team of Riverside Memorial Hospital for their attentive and loving care of Frances. Mrs. Rosalie Drewer Taylor Daley, 74, of Onancock, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va. Born July 19, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Frances Rusher Drewer and the late William Thomas Drewer, of Onancock. Rosalie loved living in Onancock and made many lifelong friends there, both at school and within the community. She graduated from Onancock High School in 1964 and attended Mary Washington College (now University of Mary Washington) in Fredericksburg, Va. She was incredibly kind, thoughtful, generous, compassionate, fun, and especially loving in her many roles, personally and professionally. Rosalie owned and managed Atlantic Food Mart in Atlantic for many years, brightening everyone’s day with her beautiful smile and creating “the place to go” for delicious fried chicken and cheesesteak subs. She was a bookkeeper for Wright’s Seafood Restaurant in Atlantic and later worked as an executive administrative assistant for the U.S. Navy at NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island. While she excelled at all she did, her favorite roles were that of daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, niece, aunt, cousin, and friend. Nothing made her happier than being with and doing for those she loved. Known for her beautiful handwriting, she sent countless cards and letters. She was a talented seamstress, making clothes and costumes for her children, smocking christening gowns, and creating beautiful items for her home. Rosalie was a wonderful cook and thoroughly enjoyed entertaining in her home, taking food to others and sharing recipes. She loved being outside, working in her gardens, and enjoying Onancock Creek. Having made her home with her first husband in Atlantic, she reared her children there, was a businesswoman and active member of that community and Atlantic Baptist Church, made many wonderful friends in the Atlantic and Wallops Island area, and loved going to Assateague Island, as the beach was one of her favorite places to be. She was an active member of Market Street United Methodist Church, Soroptimist Club of Accomack County, and Ye Accawmacke Garden Club, and adored the wonderful friends she made through those associations. Rosalie is survived by her husband, William M. Myers, Fla., Debbie Robbins (Jack), of Eastville, Andrea Scott (David), of Eastville, and Dr. Colleen Daley, of Onancock; brothers-in-law, Don Taylor (Lynn), of Salisbury, Md., Kevin Daley (Teri), of Onancock, and Stephen Daley, of Onancock; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her first husband, Tommy Taylor; son, Brian Taylor; brothers, Billy Drewer and George Drewer; sister, Irene Drewer; parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Taylor and Mr. and Mrs. William C. Daley; sister-in-law, Barbara Taylor; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Miles. Rosalie’s funeral will be held at Market Street United Methodist Church in Onancock, Saturday, May 1, 2021, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Heidi Bak officiating. Masks are required and social distancing will be enforced. An outdoor reception will follow at Wesley, the home of Rosalie and Bill Daley.
