Land bought* | 1815 | Tench Ringgold bought land in 1815 at DACOR Beacon House Lot, Washington, DC. The Dacor Bacon House www.dacorbacon.org/DBHF/Dacor_Bacon_House.htm Dacor Bacon House, built in the classic Federal style and containing twenty-four rooms, has graced the Washington scene for 165 years. The lot on which the house stands was deeded in 1801 to Colonel John Tayloe, the builder of Octagon House which is one block south of Dacor Bacon House at 18th Street and New York Avenue. In 1815, Tobias Lear, former Secretary to George Washington and the American Consul at Algiers from 1803 to 1812, bought the property and, with his wife and son, lived in a small house that existed at the time. After he committed suicide in the garden, his widow sold the property to Tench Ringgold who actually built the present-day Dacor Bacon House in 1825 along lines said to be a duplicate of Blair House as it was originally constructed. Tench Ringgold was a member of a prominent early American family. His ancestor, Thomas Ringgold, 1610-1672, came to America in 1650 and began a family line that, through succeeding generations, produced leaders prominent in the clergy, law, military, medicine, commerce and both state and national government. This is the same Ringgold family that is associated with the historic Hynson-Ringgold House in Chestertown, Maryland. At the time he built Dacor Bacon House, Tench Ringgold was the U. S. Marshall for the District of Columbia. He was appointed to that position by President James Monroe, and continued in it through the administration of President John Quincy Adams and the first two years of President Andrew Jackson's term of office. Ringgold, also a successful businessman, owned a leather factory and curing shop in Georgetown and served as Treasurer of the Georgetown Savings Institution. He was a member of the Presidential Commission in charge of repairing public buildings following the burning of Washington by the British in 1814. Indeed, Mr. Ringgold was with President James Madison while the Capitol burned and they, with Secretary of War General Armstrong, General Mason and Mr. Charles Carroll of Baltimore, fled the city together. Mrs. Ringgold was the former Mary Christian Lee, daughter of Thomas Sim Lee, the second Governor of Maryland. She d in 1826. As was the custom of the day, Tench Ringgold offered board and lodging to high officials who periodically travelled to the capital to conduct the nation's business. Among the boarders at 1801 F Street, N.W. were Chief Justice of the United States John Marshall, and his court colleague, Associate Justice Joseph Story. In one of his letters Justice Story noted that he and Marshall kept "bachelor hall at the house in the most frank and unaffected intimacy," and added, "our social hours, when undisturbed with labors of the law, are passed in gay and frank conversation." Before becoming Chief Justice, in which capacity he served from 1801 to 1835, John Marshall distinguished himself as an Officer of the American Revolution, as U. S. Envoy to France, and as both Secretary of War and Secretary of State. He is one of the giants of American jurisprudence and his extraordinary judicial achievements need no supporting documentation here. A plaque at the entrance to Dacor Bacon House attests to his residence at 1801 F Street, N.W. when the Supreme Court was in session between 1831 and 1833. Associate Justice Story, although lesser known, served on the Supreme Court from 1811 to 1845 and was a dominant figure in the Court's early history. His opinions in admiralty cases during the War of 1812 became models of international law, and in 1818 he established the Court's right to judicial review of state court decisions. Upholding the broad view of the constitution, he successfully argued in 1837 that Congress had exclusive right to regulate state and foreign commerce. His many writings and legal opinions, like those of Chief Justice Marshall, constitute important pillars of today's judicial system. Interestingly enough, the Tench Ringgolds contributed in a direct way to the history of the Supreme Court. Catherine, Tench Ringgold's second daughter of five children, m Edward D. White, then Governor of Louisiana, and their son, Edward D. White, was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1894. In 1910, he was nominated by President William Howard Taft to be Chief Justice, which high office he filled until 1921. In 1836, Tench Ringgold sold the house to Samuel Sprigg, Governor of Maryland, who presented it to his daughter, Sally, upon her marriage to William Thomas Carroll, Clerk of the Supreme Court. For the next six decades the house was known as the Carroll House, and the Carroll family used it to entertain lavishly. The Carrolls had four daughters, all of whom m well and achieved social prominence in their own right. The third daughter, Sallie, was but 21 years of age when, in December 1861, she m Captain Charles Griffin of the Union Army. Among the wedding guests at Carroll House that day were President and Mrs. Lincoln. In 1896 the Carroll estate sold the house to Melville W. Fuller who, since 1888, had been Chief Justice of the U. S. With his wife, Chief Justice Fuller entertained frequently and made the home a center of Washington's social life. He is said to have "felt a great pride in holding Court Conferences in the home where Marshall's Court had counseled."2 |

John Rodgers (who married Sarah the daughter of John Read, who died intestate), in the right of his wife and of Jonathan Rowles (guardian of Richard Read, son of Jno. Read) was granted administration of the estate. The court accepted Henry Read and Richard Rodgers as security. Deed of Mort name in | 27 November 1750 | Richard (of John of Hy Sr) Read Jr. was named in deed of mortgage on 27 November 1750 at Accomack Co, VA. I, Richard Read Junr of Accomack County, Virginia, planter, (or my heirs & Extrs) am held firmly bound to Richard Read Senr, planter, of aforesaid County, (or his heirs & Extrs) for 1,000 pounds current money of Virginia, to be paid to the said Richard Read Senr. Signed 17 Mar 1746/7. The Condition of the above obligation is such that if the above bound Richard Read Junr (or his heirs & Extrs) fulfills the agreement . . . or . . . shall at any time or times when required, sign & deliver a deed of Bill & Sale to Richard Read Senr (or his heirs & Extrs) for 5 shillings cash, (land) to be bounded on the West by Richard Read Junr's land, on the South by Pokomoke Branch, on the North by Henry Custis land, thence extending East for the compliment of 350 acres of land and marsh to be made between Richard Read Junr and Richard Read Senr according to the intent & meaning of the within Condition . . . then this obligation to be void or else to remain in full force. Witt: Edmd Scarburgh Junr & Daniel Rodgers. It was proved in Court on 27 Nov 1750 by the above witnesses. (NOTE: Evidently this 350-acres included the 200 acres left to his uncle James Read and the 150 acres left to his uncle William Read by their father Henry in 1695. They had both died without issue and Richard Junr's father John, the oldest son of Henry, had inherited their land. John died intestate in 1720 and this 350-aces went to his only son Richard Read Junr. Richard Read Senr was evidently Richard Junr's his uncle, who died in 1748 intestate, leaving this document still in force, and thus it was recorded for the benefit of his heirs & Extrs.)9,10 |
Deed of Indenture na* | 26 September 1758 | He was named in a deed of indenture on 26 September 1758 at Pocomoke Br, Pungoteague, Accomack Co, VA. This indenture made 26 Sept 1758 between Abraham Taylor and his wife Sarah and Richard Read and Henry Read. On 27 July 1757 Abraham petitioned for a mill, owning land on one side of a Branch of Pungoteague Creek called Pocomoke Branch, desirous to build a Water Grist Mill & needing an acre on the opposite side of the branch. On 13 August 1757 twelve free holders (Edmund Scarburgh & 11 others that had been selected) viewed the land and noted that some adjacent land would also go under water. There would be damage to the land of John Read, who possessed the said acre valued at 35 shillings & 6 pence, and to adjacent land owned by William Groten, valued at 6 pence. Abraham Taylor, who was to pay for the land, agreed with Richard Read and Henry Read that he would convey to each of them 1/3 part of his right & interest in the 1 acre and 1/3 part of the 1 acre next to & adjoining the mill to be built. Abraham Taylor & Sarah his wife sold this 1/3 right & interest to Richard Read & his heirs for 25 shillings & 1/3 part of said 2 acres mentioned above. Abraham Taylor & Sarah his wife also sold this 1/3 right & interest to Henry Read & his heirs for 25 shillings & 1/3 part of said 2 acres mentioned above. Access to enter into & upon the said premises for & towards the erecting & finishing of said mill & for that purpose to go through the land & plantation of Abraham Taylor with horses & carts or other necessaries to & from the said premises. Abraham will proceed to & with them (Richard & Henry) to build & finish the said mill & find & provide 1/3 part of all the necessaries that shall be required in completing & finishing the same. Richard & Henry agreed to the same. This is to continue after the death of any of the parties (by their heirs, Extrs or assignees) to keep the mill in repair & grinding. Signed by Abraham Taylor, Sarah Taylor, Richard Read & Henry Read.11 |
Land bought* | 22 August 1759 | He bought land on 22 August 1759 at tract A36, Pungoteague, Accomack Co, VA. Henry Read & Sarah his wife of Accomack County, Colony of Virginia, sold to Richard Read of the County & Colony aforesaid, for 100 pounds current money of Virginia, 537 acres of land in Accomack County on Pocomoke Branch bounded on the North & East by the land formerly of Henry Custis, on the West on Pocomoke Branch till it comes to Smith Shop Branch till it containes the said 537 acres upon the said branch Easterly. Signed: Henry (X) Read & Sarah (X) Read. Witt: Edmd Scarburgh, Nicholas Potter & Southy (X) Read. It was proved to be the act & deed of said Henry by the oaths of the witnesses thereto & admitted to recorded on 27 May 1760. (NOTE: According to Whitelaw, Henry and Sarah Read sold 537 acres of this tract to Richard Read (son of John?), this amount apparently taking out the patent acreage the land of Henry Read Jr.)3,12 |
Anecdote* | | The original 700 acres went as follows (in birth order): John - 0 ac - inherited 350 acrs from his brothers William & James, died 1720 without a will, leaving a daughter Sarah and an underage son Richard Jr to inherit 350 ac Henry Jr - 150 ac - died 1734, leaving 74 acres each to sons Richard Jr & Henry III, in 1746 Richard Jr (no wife) sold to Henry III Richard Sr - 200 ac - died 1748 without a will leaving a underage son John William - 150 ac - died without a will and no issue, 150 ac went to the oldest brother John James - 200 ac - died without a will and no issue, 200 ac went to the oldest brother John Richard Jr, son of John, inherited 350 ac from his father. John's brother Henry Jr, inherited 150 acres from his father Henry Sr in 1694 and sold it in 1713 to Thomas Budd, a miller. In 1719 Budd sold it back to Henry Jr along with a mill. In 1734 Henry Jr left his sons Richard & Henry III his mill and 74 acres each. Then in 1746 Richard Jr sold his 74 acres to his brother Henry III, which assumingly included his share of the mill. He didn't have a wife co-sign the deed in 1746. In 1758 a patent was issued to Henry III for 673 ac (originally shown as 700 ac) which was all the land shown above. Whitelaw could not determine how Henry III came to be in line to claim all the land, as John was the oldest son of Henry Sr as shown in 1695 when he petitioned the court that Mary Read (widow of Henry Sr) be summoned to probate his father's will. If Henry III had been the eldest son of the eldest son of Henry Sr it would have been more logical, but he wasn't. In 1759 Henry III & wife Sarah sold 537 ac (taking out of the patent acreage the land of his father Henry Jr, which would have been what Henry III inherited from his father and what he bought from this brother Richard Jr, which would have included the mill) to a Richard Read (no indication of him being a Jr or him being his brother). Whitelaw suggested that this Richard could have been the only son of the oldest son John, making him heir-at-law to Henry Sr, thus inheriting all the original 700 acres less the 150 ac which was given to Henry Jr.10,13,12 |
Court - appeared in* | 26 May 1762 | He appeared in court on 26 May 1762 at Pungoteague, Accomack Co, VA. Richard Reid, Abraham Taylor and Henry Reid owned a mill and wanted a road leading from it to the County Road on the north side. James Rodgers, Peter Watson, Luke Luker and Elijah Addison (or any three) were to view the site and report next court.14 |
Court - given permis* | 1 September 1762 | He was given permission to a request in court on 1 September 1762 at Pungoteague, Accomack Co, VA. Court - appeared in | 1 September 1762 | He appeared in court on 1 September 1762 at Pungoteague, Accomack Co, VA. Court - nam in petit* | 28 September 1762 | He was named in a petition that was recorded in court records on 28 September 1762 at Pungoteague, Accomack Co, VA. William Seymour petitioned that the road from the sea side to Pongoteague Church ran through his land (much to his prejudice); he asked to move the road to another part of his land. Richard Read, Henry Read, William Groten and Ezekiel Ashby (or any three) were to view the site.16 |
Court - appeared in | 30 November 1762 | He appeared in court on 30 November 1762 at Pungoteague, Accomack Co, VA. Richard Reid’s proposed road (on his land and that of John Reid) would be nearly 100 yards shorter, but a very bad road in winter and should have a 500 yard causeway six inches above the level ground with a deep ditch on one side with one or more vents under the causeway. The old road also needed a causeway in several spots totaling 118 yards. Richard and John Reid proposed a new road between themselves running between the old and new one which the viewers believed might suit the public as well as either of the others. Signed 30 November 1762, Edwd Ker, Thomas Hall, Jacob Andrews. The Reids were to clear their road and block the old one.17 |

Marriage* | circa 1700 | She married John Dennis, son of Donogh 'Donnock' Dennis (O'Cane) I and Alice 'Ellis' Nehulian (O'Hulian), circa 1700. The Upshur Family in Virginia, p. 32, footnote 98 on the ancestors of Littleton Dennis, show Sarah as the daughter of Col. Southy Littleton (1645-1679). However, The Littleton Heritage by Matthew Wise, p. 8 discounts this, showing Sarah as the wife of Adam Michael (d. 1689) and John Custis III (d. 1714). Lynn Perry in his 1963 report Dennis & Co also showed her as a Littleton, but not a daughter of Col. Southy Littleton, but a possible daughter of John Littleton of Guilford, Acc Co, VA. However John Littleton's (of Back Creek) will of 15 Sep 1718 did not name a daughter Sarah nor any Dennis grandchildren.1,2,3 |

The neck was resurveyed for a division and found to contain 2,150 acres of upland; 730 acres at the north end, including the home place, were assigned to John Eyre, in right of his wife Ann; 730 acres in the middle to Arthur V; and a balance of 690 acres at the bottom to Littleton D. Teackle, in right of his wife Elizabeth.3 |
Marriage* | 12 December 1810 | He married Anne Billings Steele, daughter of James Steele and Mary Nevett, on 12 December 1810.4 |
Land bought* | 1811 | Arthur 'Long Arthur' Upshur V bought land in 1811 at tract N49, Savage Neck, Northampton Co, VA. William White Jr., sold his part of this tract as 196 acres to Arthur Upshur, known as "Long Arthur" because of his height. He was a brother of Anne Eyre and the one who wrote the tribute on her tombstone (N43A). When his will was recorded in 1830 this land went to his wife Anne B (Steele) for life and then to a daughter Emily Louise Upshur.5 |
Census head* | 1820 | Arthur was listed as a head of household in the census of 1820 at Northampton Co, VA. The HH was headed by Arthur Upshur, age 26-45. Listed with him were 3F0-10, 1F16-26, 13 male slaves and 10 female slaves.6 |
Will* | 3 September 1827 | Arthur made a will on 3 September 1827 at Northampton Co, VA. In his will Arthur Upshur gave his land in Upshur's Neck to be equally divided between my two daughters Virginia and Laura. I give to my wife Anne B. Upshur during her life the whole of my farm in Northampton called Whitecliff and purchased of William White. I encumber the two portions devised to Virginia and Laura with an annual cash payment to said Ann B. Upshur their mother of one hundred dollars cash during her life. I give to my third daughter Emily Louisa Upshur on the death of her mother Anne B. Upshur the whole of the farm called Whitecliff. For the purpose of maintaining said Emily during the period intervening my death & her arriving at the age of eighteen, I direct that the said Virginia and Laura shall each of them pay every year to said Emily one hundred and fifty dollars. My brother in law John Eyre. I appoint my wife Anne guardian to the three children. I constitute my wife executrix. I leave my gold watch to the first male heir that may be born to either of my daughters with this injunction that his name shall correspond with that on its dial in remembrance of his Grandfather. With regard to the disposal of my body after death- I strictly enjoin my executors to have it placed in a common coffin, the lid of which is upon no account to be shut or screwed down until corruption so far takes place as to render the last services of my friends disagreeable to them nor even then or at any time after is the lid to be fastened down but to be made of light materials as to fit over the bottom of the coffin. This coffin is in no wise to be sunk deeper under ground than the lid and that part which lies below the earth to be encased in brick work which is to be raised four feet above ground and a door suspended by hinges from the top without any fastening as its own gravity will keep it shut. To accomplish this mode of sepulture, should my executors neglect to have it done as ordered- I leave five hundred dollars out of the mass of my property to any individual who will dig up my body and reinter it according to the true intent & method of burial above described. On the top of the brickwork I wish and order a plain white marble slab with the following inscription deeply carved-viz: Under this rests the remains of Arthur Upshur who was a child of misfortune and sorrows from his cradle until his death- the result of a feeble constitution and endless vexations of many kinds. In the world of spirits, he cherished the fond hope of brighter prospects. My children whenever afflictions overshadow your brow repair hither and look on this marble. It will teach you that happiness is not of this world. Signed, Arthur Upshur. Witnesses: John Eyre, Littleton Dennis Teackle, Isaac Nevett Steele. Administrator Anne B. Upshur. Bond $10,000. Appraisers: William G. Smith, Smith Nottingham, George T. Yerby and Levin Y. Winder. On November 9, 1835 Severn E. Bowdoin was granted administration de bonis non for the estate of Arthur Upshur.
