The court ordered that the sheriff bring Elizabeth Mackwilliams to the bar, where she was questioned about the identity of the father of her bastard child. When she swore that John Mellson was the father, the court ordered the sheriff to immediately take him into custody till he posted a bond for his appearance at the next court and for his good behavior. Thomas Scott and William Hazlup came into court and agreed to pay the fine of Eliza. Mackwilliams (single woman) for fornication and bastard-bearing. Ordered that Scott and Hazlup, at the next laying of the parish levy, pay the churchwardens 500 lbs tobacco for the use of the parish, along with court costs. Thomas Scott and Wm. Hazlup came into court and acknowledged themselves bound to the churchwardens to save the parish from supporting the bastard child of Eliza. Mackwilliams (single woman).1 |

At the court before 2 Sep 1685 in Accomack County, the suit of Robert Croudson against Hance Bettnor had been referred to this court; it appeared that Croudson had, for a consideration, agreed to serve Bettnor one year from 20 Jan 1684/85. Though Bettnor sold Croudson to John Lawes, he was to pay Croudson's wages. Since Bettnor was "a person of no settled residence," Croudson petitioned for security for the payment of the rest of his wages at the expiration of his time. Considering the request reasonable, the court ordered that Bettnor give security for the payment and delivery of two shirts, one kersey suit, one hat, a pair of stockings and three years' taxes along with the costs of the suit.2,1 |
