Will - Sister's* | 1915 | Joseph was named in his sister's will in 1915. In her will, Rebecca G. (Bird) Marshall named a brother J. Maurice Byrd.. |
Death* | 27 December 1937 | He died on 27 December 1937 at Montgomery Co, PA, at age 66. J. Maurice Bird was a son of John H. Bird, a prominent builder and developer. Maurice's first name was Joseph, but always went by his middle name, Mau-rice -- with a sort of French pronunciation. "Maw-REECE." For many years, Maurice was a manager and buyer for the B.H. Stinemetz clothing company, owned by Maurice's brother-in-law. Later, Maurice was owner of Bird's clothing shop in Washington, D.C. On 4 Feb 1903, Maurice married Julie Glasser, the daughter of a tailor whose family emigrated from Russia by 1891. Reverend Frank M. Bristol, pastor of Metropolitan Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, conducted the ceremony. Maurice was an ever-hopeful inventor, always working on some new and improved idea that would provide financial security for his family and him. In 1902, Maurice patented a hat box that safely stored wide-brimmed hats. Other projects included an egg beater and a chocolate that would make a better chocolate bar than Hershey or Peter Kailler. In the end, however, the only one who made money was Maurice's patent attorney.3 |
