He was shown as John Tankard (Physician), resident of N'hamp County, aged 73 years, who declares that in 1779 when the British Forces under the Command of Gen. Mathews invaded this Commonwealth in the war of the Revolution & took possession of Norfolk. The militia on both sides of James River were called into service & at that time the said Tankard was a student of Medicine in Williamsburg & he formed a company of volunteers commanded by Capt. Miles Cray, and was marched to Hampton & he was there under the Command of Col. Marshall. When the British General Matthews withdrew his forces from Norfolk & sailed for New York, the company to which the said Tankard was attached was discharged & he returned home. When the British forces in January 1781 landed at Westover on James River under the command of General Arnold, the Traitor, & were on their March to Richmond, the said Tankard was in the City of Richmond & he again volunteered his services & marched under the command of Major Miles Selden to oppose the said Arnold. When within a few miles of the enemy, intelligence was received that he greatly outnumbered the American forces, which was ordered to retreat. After the retreat, the said John Tankard was residing in Richmond & was called in Service as a soldier under the command of Lieutenant Daniel Lambert & he was ordered to Sandy Point on James River for the purpose of aiding the Marquis La Fayette in crossing the said river with his forces, but he did not cross at that time. Whilst at Sandy Point the said Tankard was placed by order of the State Government, at the solicitation of Dr. Mathew Pope, the Director General of the Hospitals, in the medical Staff & he the said Tankard was then appointed assistant to the said Director General. The said Tankard further declares that when the Marquis La Fayette about May 1781 marched through Richmond on his way to the Mountainous part of the State, he acted as surgeon to General Peter Mulehnburg's Brigade which composed a part of La Fayette's force: Mulehnburg however shortly after this time took command of a corps of Cavalry and Gen. Stevens of Culpepper County, Virginia, took command of the Brigade. John Tankard further saith that he continued to act as Surgeon to the said Brigade from May 1781 till some time after the surrender of the British forces at Yorktown in October 1781, when he was discharged from service & paid off in depreciated paper with was $1,000 for $1. The said Tankard further declared that he was in actual service in the war of the revolution between nine & ten months of which he was attached to the medical Staff as a Surgeon. John Tankard declares he was born in Hampton, Virginia, in January 1759. His father's property was burned by the British when they burnt Norfolk & Suffolk. He lived in Williamsburg, Virginia, when he first volunteered. Since the Rev. War he has lived a little while in North Carolina, a little while in Scotland, but for the last forty years he has lived in the said County of Northampton where he now lives. His service was voluntary excepting the expedition under Lieutenant Lambert when he was called into service; he never acted as a substitute, nor was he ever drafted.5 |
