Anecdote* | September 1754 | In Sep 1754 it was recorded in Northampton Co, VA, that Frances Wilkins, infant under 21 year (by John Smaw, her next friend and guardian), one of the daughters of Jonathan Wilkins late of N'hamp Co, shows that her father at the time of his death (adm 14 Apr 1747) was possessed of several slaves - Ben and Sarah. The slaves desecnded to the said Frances and her two sisters, Rachel and Joanna, infants under age 21. The three daughters were coheirs subject to the dowwer of their mother, Susanna. The said Susanna vested herself of the slaves as administrix of the estate and guardian of the three daughters. She soon married John Ellegood. They, the said Susanna and John kept possession of the two slaves and all of the profits from there on. Susanna died in 1751. Nathan Wilkins, brother to the above Jonathan and Uncle to Frances, Rachel & Jonna died in 1747 (adm 8 Mar 1747) unmarried. His sundry slaves (Mary & Dinah, woman & a girl) descended to the three Wilkins sisters. The said John Ellegood, after the death of his wife Susanna, held possession of all the slaves as guardian. However, Frances, after the death of her mother, chose John Smaw as her guardian. Since then she has frequently applied to her sisters, Rachel and Joanna for a partition of the slaves and their increase now living: Leah, Jack, Daniel, Esther, Ben and ... (paper torn). This petition asks the Court to order a division. Filed 15 May 1754 & the partition was ordered.2 |

Stringer & James Stringer by their deed conveyed 21 acres, part of the said 105 acres, unto John Stringer, son of Hillary Stringer; that on the 24 May, 1804, John F. Stringer conveyed the balance of the said land supposed to contain 75 acres unto William F. Stringer; that on the 4 Feb. 1806, William F. Stringer conveyed to his sister Peggy Smart Custis, the complainant, 1/4 of the said land, but the said land has never been legally laid off & assigned to the said Margaret Custis; that it was always understood by the parties and the intention of the parties to the deed of John F. Stringer to William F. Stringer, that the complainant Ann Stringer, widow of Thomas Stringer, should enjoy the land during their natural lives, and that it should then be divided equally between the parties to this suit, viz: William F. Stringer, Margaret Custis, James Stringer and Sarah Stringer, and in consequence of which the said William F. Stringer has given bonds unto the said Sarah Stringer & unto James, that he will convey 1/4 part of the said lands unto each of the parties according as he was bound in equity to do &c.4 |
