Capt. James (1) Davis
M, b. circa 1580, d. before 4 February 1624/25
Birth* | circa 1580 | James was born circa 1580 at England. |
Anecdote* | 1607 | Capt. James Davis was among the company of men assembled by Sir John Popham, 1607, to settle the region of Virginia which later was designated New England. Two groups of the Royal Virginia Company had been granted charters by King James I in 1606. The first group composed largely of London merchants sponsored the expedition which settled Jamestown, 1607; "the second was appropriated to the cities of Bristol, Exeter and Plimouth and the west parts of England and all those that would adventure and join with them." They were authorized to take up the land between the 38th and 44th parallels. This part of America formerly had been called Norumbega, Virginia, Nuskoncus, Penaquida, Cannada, "but because it was so mountainous, rocky and full of isles, few had adventured much to trouble it ... notwithstanding ... Sir John Popham, Lord Chief Justice of England in the year 1606 procured means and men to posses it." He sent, among others, Capt. Robert Davis to act as Sergeant-Major and Capt. James Davis to be Captain of the Fort. John Davis also is mentioned among the "noble captains" on the expedition. The relationship, if any, between Captains James, Robert and John Davis is not set forth in available records. The settlement called Sagadahock Colony was made at the mouth of the Kennebec River in what is now the state of Maine. All but 45 of the survivors of the severe winter were sent back to England and the next year the (ITAL:)Gift of God(:ITAL) and the (ITAL:)Mary and John(:ITAL), the latter with Capt. James Davis as master, were sent over with supplies and more settlers, but conditions generally proved too dificult and the colony was abandoned.1 |
Anecdote* | 3 October 1609 | Capt. James Davis next appears as master of the pinnace Virginia built by the settlers left at Sagadahock in 1607, which after a maiden voyage to England was grouped in a fleet of nine vessels that assembled at Falmouth and departed from there for Virginia, 9 June 1609. This expedition, known as the "Third Supply," with 500 persons aboard and headed by Sir Thomas Gates and Sir George Somers, bore the new Charter of the Virginia Company granted by King James I, 23 May 1609. The fleet ran into a hurricane shortly after passing the Canary Islands and the (ITAL:)Virginia (:ITAL)under Capt. James Davis with Master Davis aboard did not arrive at Jamestown until 3 Oct 1609. Immediately, Capt. Davis and his men were assigned to Old Point Comfort where Capt. John Ratcliffe, alias Sicklemore, was in command. Ratcliffe was slain by the Indians while on a trading expedition and Davis assumed his command. When Somers and Gates finally arrived, 1610, and saw the plight of the remaining colonists, they concurred in the decision to abandon the settlement and return to England. The Virginia was dispatched from Jamestown to take on board Capt. Davis and his men at Fort Algernoun located at Old Point. The timely arrival of Lord De La Warr with relief changed the outlook and the settlers disembarked from the loaded vessels and resumed their habitations.2 |
Marriage* | circa 1610 | He married Rachell (-----) circa 1610.2 |
Anecdote | 22 May 1611 | Shortly thereafter Capt. Davis was sent against the Indians and while still in command at Fort Algernoun, 22 May 1611, he was orderd to repossess the two abandoned forts, Henry and Charles, located on the capes at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay. At the close of Sir Thomas Dale's administration, 1616, Capt James Davis had commanded of the colonists at Henrico, althought his absence is noted there when Capt. Smalley assumed authority.2 |
Death* | before 4 February 1624/25 | James died before 4 February 1624/25 at Virginia. In the muster of 4 Feb 1624/5 Capt. James Davis was listed among the "dead at all these plantations over the water" (south side of James River)..2,3 |

The family moved back and forth from Virginia to Maryland since James Davis proved rights for transporting his 2 sons, both named Thomas, from Virginia to Maryland on 10 Aug 1671 and on 23 Sep 1675 proved rights for transporting his daughter Rachell from Virginia to Maryland.3 |
