Civil War Enlisted* | 15 January 1864 | He enlisted in the Civil War on 15 January 1864 at Pennsylvania. The Civil War called to Robert and on January 15, 1864, he enrolled. Six days later, he was mustered in as a Private in the 183rd Regiment, PA Volunteer Infantry, Company G. Robert may have regretted his decision, because less than two weeks after enrolling, on February 1st, he deserted. His desertion didn't last long. A week later, he was apprehended and his papers noted that $30 was to be withheld from his pay. Robert's action wasn't uncommon: one in five Union soldiers deserted (Confederate desertions may have been as high as one in three). How many deserted within weeks of enrolling is unknown, however. On March 11, Robert was admitted to hospital number 2489--Campbell General Hospital in Washington, DC--with Chronic Bronchitis. In mid-June, he received treatment for something (cannot read the document). On June 12 or 13, 1864, their daughter Elizabeth "Lizzie" Broadwater was born. In mid-August, the 183rd Pennsylvania Regiment fought in the Battle of Second Deep Bottom under the First Division, First Brigade of the Major General Winfield S. Hancock's II Corps, crossing the James River just south of Richmond, Virginia. On August 17, 1864, Robert received a gunshot wound at Malvern Hill, injuring the third toe on his right foot. It's possible that this injury happened at camp. Perhaps he was cleaning his rifle, or maybe it was intentional. Either way, he was transported back to DC from Deep Bottom for recovery and was re-admitted to Campbell General Hospital on the 21st. He was "transferred" three days later, though it's unknown where. There were 4,600 total casualties, 2,900 of them Union including *** from the 183rd Regiment. Robert came away lucky with only a musket ball to his toe. At the time of Robert's injury, his wife Elizabeth was living at 740 Swanson St. According to an 1864 Philadelphia directory, a cutter named James McShane lived at this address. On May 26, 1865, Robert was mustered out, due $22.38.3 |
Census head* | 1 June 1870 | Robert was listed as a head of household in the census of 1 June 1870 at Ward 4, Philadelphia, PA. HH#795 was headed by Robt Broadwater, a 40 year old "Huckster," born in Virginia. Listed with him were the following Broadwaters: Eliza, age 40, born in Virgnia; Mary, age 12, born in Pa; Sarah, age 20, born in Pa; Henry, age 8; born in Pa; Eliza, age 6, born in Pa; Louisa, age 3, born in Pa. Also listed with Kate Hudson, age 25, born in Pa.4 |
Death* | 12 October 1890 | He died on 12 October 1890 at Philadelphia, PA. Findagrave shows him as shown as Robert J. Broadwater, born 1829 in Virginia and died 12 Oct 1890 in Philadelphia, PA. He was a Private in Company G., 183rd Pennsylvania, Civil War. On October 12, 1890, at age 61, Robert died suddenly of a gastric ulcer. The funeral was held three days later at Robert and Elizabeth's home at 86 Mifflin Street in Philadelphia, but according to newspaper reports, there was as exciting scene at the funeral of Robert J. Broadwater, of 86 Mifflin Street, caused by the breaking of the floor supports, and it looked at one time as if the coffin and mourners would be precipitated into the cellar. The house in which the family resided is an old one, and while the officiating clergyman was making a touching address a cracking of timbers and sinking of the floor startled those present. The pall-bearers grasped the coffin and prevented it from upsetting, and the minister, fearing that the floor would give way entirely, requested those present to retire, which they did, and no one was hurt. Supports were then placed under the weak portion of the floor and the ceremonies proceeded with.
