Land bought* | 31 May 1763 | He bought land on 31 May 1763 at tract A125, south of Guilford Creek, Accomack Co, VA. In 1704 Griffith and Anne Savage sold 250 acres to John Clarke, it being the northeast quarter of the original 1,000 acre patent. In 1713 Clarke resold to Hancock Custis and John Wise Sr, as trustees "for the use of the Parish of Accomack for ever for the Glebe." At this time there was only one Parish in Accomack, which took in the whole county. In 1724 Rev. William Black, the then minister, said the "Glebe and house good for nothing, rented for £1. I do not live on it." On 2 Nov 1762 an Act was passed in Williamsburg which divided the Parish of Accomack in Acccomack County into 2 District Parishes. It was ordered that the previous Glebe land be sold and that a new one be obtained for each Parish. On 31 May 1763, complying with the mandated, the church wardens Coventon Corbin, John Kitson, Joseph Stockley, Wm. Matthews, Samuel Beavans, Thomas Crippen, Charles Stockley and George Holden sold the 250-acre Glebe farm to Charles Bagwell, but apparently they felt the land was the best obtainable for the new upper parish of Accomack, so on the same day, Bagwell and wife Anne deeded it all back to the church wardens Coventon Corbin and Southy Simpson. The deed showed it contained 250 acres on a branch of Guilford Creek and sold for 417 pounds.5,6 |
Land Division of* | 1765 | He was named in a division of land in 1765 at tract A69, S-E of Accomac, Accomack Co, VA. In 1722 Alexander (7) Bagwell (a brother of Henry (6) Bagwell), wife Neomy, left his part of this tract to his daughter Mary (28) Bagwell and in 1742 George Douglas sold this part to John Smith, saying it was the land he bought from Mary Smith. In 1753 John & Susanna Smith made a deed of gift to his brother William Robinson Smith for this land along with some from tract A70. In 1760 William R. Smith, wife Mary, left his land to his daughter Elizabeth. The widow Mary Robinson Smith married Fairfax Smith and 5 years later Fairfax as guardian for young Elizabeth, sued for division of her land from that belonging to her cousins Spencer and Charles Bagwell. The line was run the next year, beginning at the point in the middle at the end of the neck and extending westward to the west bounds of the tract, with the north half formally awareded to Elizabeth. She later married Thomas Custis.7 |
