Biography* | 1785 | Daniel Hall is mentioned in Whitelaw, p1274, in describing the ownership of tract A151, which Daniel inherited from his grandmother, Catherine, through his mother Catherine and her husband John Hall. In 1785 Daniel Hall left to his son Henry, and in 1810 he (Henry) (wife Molly) left the eastern 120 acres to his son Thomas and the western home part of 126 acres to his son Henry. Daniel is also mention on p1280, in describing the ownership of A158, which is just to the west of Sanford and extents to the Pocomoke River. In 1770 Jonathan and Joyce Mears sold 100 acres to Daniel Hall, it being part of the land which had been bought from Simon Smith, Jr. In 1784 Daniel Hall (the year before his death) sold to John Silverthorne. He is also mentioned on p1293, in describing tract A162, which is in the Bullbegger area. In 1755 Thomas and Capewell Stockley, sons of Thomas, of New Hanover county, in the province of North Carolina, sold to Daniel Hall. In 1785 Hall left to his son Dixon, who was then living here. In 1820 Dixon Hall left the major part to his son Luther and the balance to his son Erastus. In 1822 Luther sold a surveyed 169 acres to Caleb Duncan, and two years later 58 acres which had belonged to Erastus were surveyed for a division among his heirs. These surveys revealed that Erastus' land was at the east end, while Luther's land was along the road. Daniel Hall is also mentioned on p1316, in describing the ownership of A170, which is just southwest of New Church. In 1755 John Stockley sold a portion of the tract to Daniel Hall, who in 1757 sold 200 acres to Andrew Simpler of Worcester Co, MD. Daniel Hall's will, written 4 June 1784, probated 23 Feb 1785 and further proved by Susanna Riley, a witness thereto, on 27 Apr 1785, specified: ITEM - To my daughter Susanna Kennet all the negroes and cash and all of everything that she hath in her possession that ever was mine and also 10 pounds current money of Virginia. ITEM - To my son Henry Hall the land he now lives on and one negro man named George that he now hath in possession, one hand mill, my high chest of drawers and my brandy still and worm. ITEM - To my gand daughter Sally Hall one negro boy named Sevin. ITEM - To my grand daughter Catron Hall one negro boy named Ishmel and sixty French crowns. ITEM - To my brother Ephraim Hall all my wearing clothes and five pounds cash. ITEM - To son Dixon Hall the land he now lives on being 200 acres more or less to him and his heirs forever. ITEM - To my grandson Bennet Hall one negro boy named Frank. ITEM - To my grand daughter Abigail Hall, daughter of Dixon Hall, one negro boy named Peter. ITEM - To my son Dixon Hall after my just debts being paid all the remainder of my estate that I have not already given away. Biography* | | The fact that his name was Richard Dixon Hall is based on Census records listing him as Dixon, his will listed him as Dixon and his son Richard Hall marriage license bond showed "Richard son of Richard." According to Jane Kahler, Dixon Hall was a soldier in the Rev. War, but he is not listed as such in Nottingham's Rev. Soldiers and Sailors. "Dixson Hall" is shown in the Acc Co, VA, Personal Property Tax 1787 - List A, p82. His tithables included: 8 blacks above age 16; 6 blacks under age 16; 4 horses, mares, colts & mules; and 14 cattle. The 1800 Census shows Dixson Hall as a head of family in Acc Parish with the following free white males: 1 age 0-10 (b. 1790-1800), 1 age 10-16 (b. 1785-1790), 1 age 16-26 (b. 1775-1785), and 1 age 45 and over (b. before 1755) being himself. Free white females included: 1 age 0-10 (b. 1790-1800), 1 age 10-16 (b. 1785-1790), 1 age 16-26 (b. 1775-1785), and 1 age 45 and over (b. before 1755) being his wife. He had 14 slaves. If all of these were his children, he would have had 3 sons and 3 daughters living with him at this time. The 1810 Census shows Dixon Hall as a head of family in Acc Parish with the following free white males: 1 age 0-10 (b. 1800-1810), 1 age 10-16 (b. 1795-1800), 1 age 16-26 (b. 1785-1795), and 1 age 45 and over (b. before 1765) being himself. Free white females included: 1 age 0-10 (b. 1800-1810) and 1 age 26-45 (b. 1765-1785). He had 9 slaves. If all of these were his children, he would have had 3 sons and 2 daughters living with him at this time and his wife, over 45 in the 1800 Census, would have died. According to Nottingham's Wills and Administrations, Dixon Hall wittnessed the will of Cathrin Marchant in 1779 and Robert Pitt's in 1794. |
