William James 'W.J.' Bundick1
M, b. 26 January 1829, d. 6 April 1907
Birth* | 26 January 1829 | William was born on 26 January 1829 at Accomack Co, VA.2 |
Census w/another* | 1850 | William was listed with another family in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as William Bundick, age 25 and a laborer, in HH#374, headed by William Justice, age 32 and a farmer. This household was listed next to that of Thomas T. Taylor, age 74, whose tombstone in behind Mount Wharton, east of Atlantic Road, between Atlantic and Assawoman. Thomas T. Taylor died testate in 1851, owning 1,009 acres, which included Mount Wharton (Whitelaw, pp. 1244/5). It seems likely that William Justice was living on this land and that he and William Bundick were both farming for Taylor. On the back of a picture of William J. Bundick it states that "he was hired out to farm work at $10.00 a year." His granddaughter, Lena (Bundick) Trader, said that he walked most of the way from New York to Accomack County when he was still under age 21. Since he was in the Assawoman area in 1850 and since hie three oldest children were born in near Assawoman, it is assumed he was old enough to remember some of his Accomack County relatives if his parents did not move to New York until the middle or late 1830's, and that he returned to Accomack County to live among his parents' people after his father's death in New York circa 1845..3 |
Marriage* | 14 December 1853 | He married Elizabeth Seymour Baker, daughter of Asa Baker and Elizabeth Mears, on 14 December 1853 at Accomack Co, VA. He was listed as William J. Bundick of William and she as Elizabeth Seymour Baker of Asa Baker..1,4 |
Land bought* | 14 April 1859 | William bought land on 14 April 1859 at Accomack Co, VA. The deed stated that he bought 34 acres of land from Edmund Fisher, free Negro, for $737.50. The tract adjoined land of William Laws on the southwest. It was bordered on the southwest by lands of Samuel Dix, northwest by Wallops Road (present-day U.S. 13) and northeast by the Market Road leading from Modest Town to Guilford (present-day Nelsonia Road). In 1859 this area apparently had no name. It later came to be called Helltown, which was changed to Nelson Park in 1882 and to Nelsonia by 3 Feb 1883. The tract was rectangular in shape, the greater length running southwest (roughly south) along present-day U.S. 13 from the stop-light in Nelsonia, and the smaller side extending from the stop-light towards Modest Town. Apparently, William J. Bundick did not move his family here until after the 1860 census was taken. The family was definitely living on this land by Nov 1861, when Union troops marched down the Eastern Shore, for family tradition tells of his oldest son, Asa J. Bundick, sitting on the front yard fence waving and American flag as the troops passed..5 |
Census head* | 1860 | William was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1860 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Wm. J. Bundick, the head of HH#798, age 32 and farming, with a wife Elizabeth S., also age 32 and children: Polly Ann, age 5; Oceanna, age 4; and Asa J., age 3. Also listed with him was Molly Tatham, age 53 and a housekeeper. From the names of his neighbors, he was still living in the Assawoman or Atlantic area.. |
Census head | 1870 | William was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1870 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as age 41 and a farmer with a wife Seymour, age 34 and children: Polly, age 15; Anna, age 14; son Asa, age 12; Elizabeth, age 9; Emma, age 6; William, age 3; and Maria 'Lacy,' age 8 months.. |
Census head | 1880 | William was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1880 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as age 51and being born in Virginia as were both of his parents. The only Bundicks in Virginia at the time of his birth were those of Accomack County. His wife Seymour was age 44. Their children were: Asa, age 22 and a carpenter; Elizabeth, age 19; Emily, age 16; William T., age 12; Lacy, age 8; Andrew, age 7; and Edward C., age 5. William Parks, a son-in-law, was also in the household.. |
Census w/another | 1900 | William was listed with another family in the census of in 1900 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as being born in 1829 and wife Seymour born in 1836. They were both in the household headed by William B. Miles, his son-in-law. He had turned his farming operations over to his son-in-law by that time.. |
Will* | 10 January 1901 | He made a will on 10 January 1901 at Accomack Co, VA. He named all nine of his children, directing that his estate be divided between all of them except Lacy M. Miles, who was to receive only $1.00. He reserved the family grave yard and made his sons Asa J. and Edward C. executors. Family notes indicate that he had a disagreement with his daughter Lacy after his wife died, at which time he moved from his home place to live with his daughter Oceanna Bloxom (about the time he sold his home?). The same records indicate that his other children divided his estate with their sister..6 |
Land sold* | 17 August 1904 | William sold land on 17 August 1904 at Accomack Co, VA. The deed showed that he sold his son, William T. Bundick, two tracts of land near Nelsonia for $2,500. The first tract was his home place, 35 acres, bordered northeast by the county road from Modest Town to Nelsonia, northwest by the county road from Nelsonia to Gargatha, southeast by Benjamin Parks, south by Thomas Littleton, and southwest by Henry Fox and Americus Baker. The second tract was 4 acres of swamp land, bordered on the southeast by the county road from Mappsville to Nelsonia..7 |
Death* | 6 April 1907 | William died on 6 April 1907 at Bloxom Station, Acc Co, VA, at age 78. He died of heart failure at the home of his daughter, Oceanna Bloxom, and was buried beside his wife. He was evidently moved to Modest Town Ch Cem at a later date. He was a member of the Modest Town Baptist Church..8 |
Burial* | | His body was interred at Bull Plot, Nelsonia, Acc Co, VA. He was moved from the family plot in Nelsonia to the Modest Town Church Cemetery in 1959..2 |

Marshall, age 38 and a laborer, the sister and brother of his deceased father Samuel..2 |
Biography* | 1857 | Richard Marshall, "orphan of Nancy, deceased," chose Henry B. Northam his guardian on 28 Dec 1857 (Acc Orders 1857-1860, p. 110), apparently so that he could marry while still under age, for on the same date, Richard Marshall, "ward of Henry B. Northam" obtained a marriage license to marry Nancy Shay. This proves that Richard's mother was Nancy, and that she died before 1857. This then leaves two choices for his father, Samuel and John, since they both married a Nancy. The proof that his father was Samuel is based on the fact that in 1900, one of Richard's sons was living with a Richard Smith, age 45, and was labeled his nephew (great-nephew?). This indicates that Richard was the son of Nancy Smith, who married Samuel Marshall. He was living with his son Otho in 1910. Family members report that he was buried in the Old Messongo Church graveyard without a tombstone. Undocumented information on the family of Richard R. Marshall and his wife Nancy (Shay) Marshall, was given by Mr. Milton D. Marshall, Mrs. Georgie (Marshall) Webb, Mrs. Novella (Marshall) Marshall now deceased, and Mr. William Richard Marshall of Pocomoke, MD. |

Samuel (of Sampson) Marshall Jr.
M, b. circa 1785, d. circa 1825
Birth* | circa 1785 | Samuel was born circa 1785 at Accomack Co, VA. |
Biography* | | Samuel Marshall Jr.'s birth date is an estimate based on being 26-45 (35) in 1820 and his marriage in 1809 (24). He was apparently a son of Sampson Marshall for he married and lived in the same area as other of Sampson's sons. As proof, Henry Marshall, a proven son of Sampson, mortgaged personal property to Samuel, Isaiah, Sr, and John J. Johnson on 24 Aug 1821 (Acc Deeds 1821-22, p. 150). On 30 Jun 1821, Samuel Marshall mortgaged personal property to Samuel and John J. Johnson as security for $18 he owed John Wharton (Acc Deeds 1821-22, p. 149a). The fact that Samuel was called "Junr" has little signifience, since until 1800 or after, the term only meant "the younger" and was often applied to a man who had an uncle, cousin, or even an unrelated older man of the area with the same name. In 1820 he was living near the Barnes of the Hunting Creek area of Acc Co and had 3 sons under 10 in his household. He had apparently died before 1830, when Nancy Marshall, aged 40-50, headed a household near Adah Marshall in the Messongo area. There was only one male in her household, under 5. Tracing the descendants of Samuel Marshall Junr. beyond this point is somewhat speculative. There seems little doubt that he was the grandfather of Nancy Marshall, b.c. 1836, who was in the household of John Chesser in 1860 and of Arenea Marshall, daughter of Nancy, who, at age 20, married Henry Knight in 1855 at William Marshall's. However, the name(s) of their father is in doubt. 2 Nancy Marshalls have been found in the 1850 Census, both aged 50 and both apparently daughters-in-law of Samuel Marshall Jr. and his wife Nancy (Barnes) Marshall. One was in the household of James Topping, who was 23 and unmarried. Apparently she had a daughter Sinai Marshall, age 10. The other Nancy Marshall was head of a household next to Johannes Bird, which included James T. Marshall, 38, Sinai Marshall, 39 and Richard Marshall, age 11. From this little information and the 1820 and 1830 Census, the children of Samuel are thought to be those listed below. |
Marriage* | 28 January 1809 | He married Nancy Ann Barnes, daughter of John Barnes and Tabitha (-----), on 28 January 1809 at Accomack Co, VA. John Snead, jailor, was the security on the M.L.B. of Sampson (Samuel?) Marshall Jr. and Nancy Barnes of Tabitha..1,2 |
