Biography* | 1856 | According to James E. Mears in his book Hacks Neck & Its People, James Harvey Hoffman (son of Hejay (?) Hoffman, whose parents came from Germany and settled in Trenton, NJ) came to Hacks Neck from Smith Island, MD, and in 1856 purchased from George S. Rogers a tract of 127 acres, comprising all of the land between the east side of the present main road through Harborton and the western boundary of the "Poplar Grove" farm, now owned by the estate of L. Floyd Nock, dec'd, from the south bank of Pungoteague Creek to and slightly beyond the Hacks Neck - Pungoteague highway. This parcel comprised the two tracts that in 1825 commissioners dividing the estate of Levi Hutchinson assigned to his daughters Dorenda (Coleburn) and Elizabeth (Dunn). James Harvey Hoffman, who was the community's first postmaster, his father, his wife, and several of their children died at Harborton. (NOTE: Gail Waczyk, an expert on the families of Smith Island, MD and the bayside of Accomack Co, VA, found his Hoffman ancestors were actually in Accomack County since the late 1700s and their name was sometimes spelled Hopman.)6 |

Sally Evans $100 and to my dau. Jane Sparrer (Sparrow) $100. To son Westly Hoffman Hoffman 6 acres of land off the south end of my field, embracing the house where Thos. All of my woodland north of the main neck road to son William G. Hoffman, and all my woodland south of the said road to be equally divided between sons Westly and N. S. Hoffman. His tithables included: 2 blacks above age 16; 7 blacks under age 16; 4 horses, mares, colts & mules; and 21 cattle. In the 1800 Census, he is shown as a head of family in Acc Parish, with the following free white males: 2 age 0-10 (b. 1790-1800), 1 age 10-16 (b. 1785-1790), and 1 age 45 and over (b. before 1755) being himself. Free white females included: 3 age 0-10 (b. 1790-1800), 3 age 16-26 (b. 1775-1785), 1 age 26-45 (b. 1755-1775) and 1 age 45 and over (b. before 1755) being his wife Molly. He had 12 slaves. If all of these were his children, he would have had 3 sons and 7 daughters living with him. According to Nottingham's Wills and Administrations, Henry Hall witnessed the will of William Drummond which was probated in 1797 and the administration of Parker West's estate was to Henry Hall in 1799. Henry Hall is mentioned in Whitelaw, p1274, in describing the ownership of tract A151, which was on the north side of Messongo Creek, near Sanford. According to Whitelaw, in 1810, Henry Hall (wife Molly) left the eastern 120 acres to his son Thomas and the western home part of 126 acres to his son Henry. |
