Death* | 24 July 1958 | Wilbur died on 24 July 1958 at Wachapreague, Accomack Co, VA, at age 59. Missing Boat Found From Air WACHAPREAGUE - A searcher from the air today reported he found the missing boat of Wilber Bonniwell, 59-year-old, waterman of Wachapreague. Mr. Bonniwell disappeared in his 14-foot outboard Tuesday evening after he had gone to bail out his larger boat here. Friends and relatives assume that after he had bailed out the boat, he set off for a brief spin in his outboard. When he failed to return home, a sister with whom he lived, Mrs. Lon Hickman, became alarmed and notified the Coast Guard. An air and sea search was begun. Joseph McMath, a private pilot of Onley, reported he saw the boat in a small creek near Willis Wharf about 7am today. He was unable to say whether or not Mr. Bonniwell was alive and in the boat. Mr Bonniwell, a World War I veteran was in poor health. Found in Salisbury Times (Salisbury, Maryland); pg 8 on 26 Jul 1958. ------------- WACHAPREAGUE - Funeral services for Wilbur R Bonniwell were held from the Williams Funeral Home, Onancock, yesterday. The Rev. Herbert Bowers officiated and interment was in Mt. Holly Cemetery, Onancock. On Tuesday evening of last week Mr. Bonniwell, left Wachapreague dock in his outboard motor boat and did not return. Local airplanes and Coast Guard searched for the missing man until Friday morning when the boat was sighted in Black Duck Cove, seven miles from Quinby by Joe McMath's plane. Authorities were notified and upon reaching the small craft, Mr. Bonniwell was found dead. He was lying in the boat as though he had been sleeping. Dr. J.L. DeCormis, coroner, was summoned and he pronounced death as due to unknown reasons. It is believed Mr. Bonniwell got lost during the night in the winding inlet and died of a heart attack Tuesday night after he left the Wachapreague dock. A World War I veteran, he had been in poor health for some time. He is survived by a son, Wilbur Bonniwell, of Kiptopeke Beach; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Willis, Exmore; Mrs. Celeste Costin, Capeville; three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Rhodes, Lego, Florida; Mrs. French Chandler, Keller; Mrs. Blanche Hickman, Wachapreague; two brothers, William T Bonniwell, Hampton, and C.O. Bonniwell, Harborton. Found in Salisbury Times (Salisbury, Maryland); pg 1 on 28 Jul 1958..2,3 |
