Rachel Taylor filed a chancery suit to permit her to sell some of the slaves of her dec'd husband, William Taylor (who died before 27 Oct 1789), to help support her children. Pages 1-16 include the suit proceedings and pages 17-67 are what is assumed to be William Taylor's account book. Page 2 shows her children as William, Peggy, Betsy, Euphamy, John & Wilson, who were infants (under age 21) when the suit was first submitted. Page 4 shows your orator and oratrix as William Taylor and Rachel Taylor (therefore the oldest son William is probably now over 21). The said William Taylor, dec'd, left a considerable personal estate which has been applied to the payment of his debts. He left the following slaves, to wit: Derry, Will, Nanny, Leah, Southy, Levi, Tagil(?), Harry, Tumar & child, all of which said Negroes now remain in the possession of the said William Taylor's admr, undivided, except Harry, Tumar & her child, which have been sold be decree of the court for the special purpose of maintaining the said William Taylor's young children and your orator & oratrix show that they are entitled to a distributive share of the said Negroes, now undivided. It also states that several of William Taylor's children are infants (under 21) and unable to do any act themselves and also entitled to a share with your orator & oratrix. The premise being considered is that certain persons be appointed to divide and set apart the slaves agreeable to equity & good conscience. Page 5 shows that Peggy Taylor, Betsy Taylor, Euphamey Taylor and Wilson Taylor, infants and children of William Taylor, dec'd, be represented by Wm. Gibb, their guardian, to the complaint of William Taylor and Rachel Taylor. Another listing of the infant children also includes a John Taylor. Page 7 shows that on 5 June 1792 William Downing, John Logan & Geo. Corbin partitioned the slaves of William Taylor (B.S.) (blacksmith) dec'd, among the complainants and respondents (after setting aside the widow's dower) as follows: Slaves to be divided - Derry, Will, Nan, Leiv, Leah, Southey & Sall. They were distributed to Rachel Taylor, William Taylor, Euphamy, Peggy and Wilson. John & Betsey were to receive payments from brother William and sister Euphamy certain amounts to make the values received by all children equitable. Page 9 shows that at the March 1792 court ordered that William Downing, John Gillet, John Logan and George Corbin or any two of them, make partition of the slaves and that William Gibb be appointed guardian to the youngest children of William Taylor for the purpose of answering this bill. Page 13 shows that on 27 Aug 1792 that John Logan, Peter Delastatius & William Downing sold slaves Harry, Thamer & child Leah to Jno. Wharton for a total of £66.10.0. Page 15 shows that the account of sales of the estate of William Taylor was dated 13 Aug 1772. Pages 17-44 of William Taylor's account book shows entries from 1762 thru 1771. Page 46 shows that in 1767 Negroes belonging to George Abbott were hired out, showing the names of the Negroes and to whom they were hired to. Page 49 shows a similar list for 1768. Page 50 shows that on 13 Aug 1773 a bed and furniture was sold. Page 51 shows that on 13 Aug 1772 & 8 Jan 1773 there were other sales include a Negro and land.
