Death* | 1 December 1935 | James Justice Gladstone died on 1 December 1935 at Northampton Co, VA, at age 99. A family story was that he wanted to live to be 100. On December 1st, he asked "Aunt Helen" (his wife?) what day it was. She said it was Christmas Day. He then closed his eyes and died." One of his newspaper obituaries found in the Bible reads: "Mr. James Justis (sic) Gladstone, whose death occurred on December 1, 1935, was the son of Captain William E. Gladstone and Anne Teakle his wife, and was born December 25, 1835. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, December 3, from his late home "Aspen Grove," near Hadlock, and interment was in the family burying ground there. They were conducted by his pastor, Rev. H.A. Glauss, assisted by the Rev. J.W. Gee and the Rev. E.D. Vaughan. During the services Mr. Vaughan sang "How Firm a Foundation, Ye Saints of the Lord." Six grandsons, W.H. Gladstone (maybe this was Howard, son of Will), John Ward, Linwood Ward, Clarence Ward, Edgar Ward and Bernard Gladstone (This might have been Bernace, son of Joe and Henrietta) were his pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers were C. M. Lankford, J. B. Floyd, Edward Gladstone, G. W. Hurt, J. P. Westcott, John T. Ames, John Gladstone, Charles Ashby (grandson), Louis Gladstone, J. B. Gibb (son-in-law) and J. W. Gladstone. The large number of friends in attendance and the profusion of beautiful flowers attest the esteem in which he was held. From childhood to the day of his death Mr. Gladstone was a loyal and devoted member of Franktown M.E. (sic) Church. His religion was a vital part of his life and his influence for righteousness was inevitably felt by those around him. At the age of twenty-three Mr. Gladstone was married to Miss Emily Minson, who died many years ago. Of this union there were born eleven children and the following survive: Joseph E. Gladstone and Robert T. Gladstone, of Exmore; W. J. Gladstone and C.J. Gladstone, of Hadlock; Dr. Charles Gladstone, of Tangier, and Mrs. Willard Ashby, of Wardtown. A daughter, Mrs. John J. Ward, of Birds Nest, and a son, John Gladstone, of Oklahoma, died some years ago, and the others in infancy. In January 1905, Mr. Gladstone married Mrs. Helen Prenier Fowler, widow of Capt. Henry Fowler. By her and her daughters, Mrs. S.M. Sanner and Mrs. J.B. Colbeth, of Baltimore, he is also survived. Between these daughters and Mr. Gladstone there existed a rare and beautiful example of filial devotion, for to them, he was indeed a loving father. He also leaves behind to exemplify his many noble traits of character, twenty-six grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren. It was the cherished hope of a large circle of relatives and friends that Mr. Gladstone would live to celebrate the 100th (sic) anniversary of his birth on Christmas Day, and though the fulfillment of this desire was denied them, they yet realize that the promise, 'Thou shall come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season,' in him was verily consummated (sic)." A second newspaper obituary found in the family Bible reads: "Mr. James J. Gladstone, the oldest citizen of the Eastern Shore, passed away at his home at Hadlock, Sunday, December 1st, of the infirmities of his age. He was born December 25, 1835 and lived on the farm where he had resided at the time of his death for sixty years. Had he lived until Christmas day this year he would have been 100 (sic) years old. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, December 3rd, conducted (sic) by Rev. H.A. Glauss, pastor of Franktown Methodist Church, of which he had been a member for eighty-four years, assisted by Rev. J.W. Gee and Rev. E.D. Vaughan. Internment was in the family burying ground. The active pallbearers were his grandchildren, Messrs. W.H. Gladstone, John Ward, Linwood Ward, Clarence Ward, Edgar Ward and Bernard Gladstone. The honorary pallbearers were Messrs. C.M. Lankford, John T. Ames, Charles Ashby, J.W. Gladstone, J.P. Westcott, John Ben Floyd, John Gladstone, Edward Gladstone (sic-no comma) Lewis Gladstone (sic-no comma) Gill Hurt and Joe Gibb. Mr. Gladstone is survived by his second wife, Mrs. Helen Fowler Gladstone, to whom he had been married for thirty-one years, five sons, Messrs. Joseph E. Gladstone, R.T. Gladstone and C.J. Gladstone, of Exmore, W.J. Gladstone, of Hadlock and Dr. Charles F. Gladstone, of Tangier and one daughter, Mrs. Willard Ashby, of Wardtown."2,1 |
