I give to my grand son Thomas Parramore Parker the tract of land I purchased of James Ashby situate in the county of Accomack containing by estimation eighty four acres & adjoining the lands of Smith Stringer, Elijah Ames & Wm Edmunds- also I give to my said grand son two Negroes Sam & Edgar I also give my said grand son five thousand dollars provided nevertheless that if my said grandson should die under the age of twenty one years & without issue, in that event, all the aforesaid property I give to my son John C. Anecdote | 1833 | John Wesley Andros Elliott, son of Thomas and grandson of William, was converted in 1833, licensed to preach in 1835, and ordained a deacon in 1845. Unlike his father, however, he never became a "traveling" minister, but served as a local preacher up and down the Shore for the rest of his life. In 1887 he estimated that he had in the course of 52 years preached 2,500 sermons, conducted 1,000 funerals, married 400 couples, baptized 75 persons, and offered public prayer 20,000 times. His historical writings and reminiscences, some of which were published locally uner his pseudonym, "Septuagenarian." The are a valuable source of early Methodist history on the Eastern Shore.7 |
