Civil War* | 15 May 1864 | He was a soldier in the Civil War on 15 May 1864 at New Market, VA. Benjamin A. Colonna was at VMI in Lexington on Aug. 3, 1860, enrolling at the age of 16. Among the faculty members was Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson – a West Point graduate who had arrived at VMI in 1851 – and who took young cadets to Richmond to help train volunteers before he joined the Confederate army at the start of the Civil War and soon earned his nickname. That exposure to Jackson apparently paid off. Benjamin Colonna was among about 250 cadets who engaged Union troops at New Market on May 15, 1864. He served as a company captain in the fight, which the cadets won, Harper said, though five were killed and five others died of wounds shortly afterward. After graduating from VMI in June 1864, he joined the Confederate army and served under Gen. Joseph Johnston, Harper said. The family's Civil War connection didn't end with Benjamin. He and Charles had a half-brother, John Thomas Colonna, a Confederate soldier. Just days before the Battle of New Market, he was captured along with several other young soldiers in Gloucester County. They were summarily shot to death by Union troops, on suspicion of being spies. After the war, Benjamin became a schoolteacher on the Eastern Shore before joining the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1870. He did well enough to make the initial $1,800 loan to his brother, enabling the start of the shipyard. Five years later, he loaned him more money, enabling Charles and Benjamin to buy the roughly 50-acre site on which Colonna's Shipyard now sits for $5,500. "Benjamin, he was a smart cookie," Harper said. "He told his brother, 'Look around for a piece of property." He advised finding a location with deeper water, where he could accommodate bigger ships and grow the business. At the time, Charles had not been able to pay back a penny of the original $1,800 loan, Bill Colonna said. "His brother had great confidence in him, I'll tell you that," he said. In 1884, the brothers settled their financial accounts and were "even," Harper said.1 |
