The latter died in 1819 and the next year his land was surveyed for a division among the numerous heirs; his holding totaled 384 acres, including a large part of the land north of the crossroad which had been acquired by him or his fahter. The home and 7 acres went to a Hulton Kellam, who bought up the interests of some of the other heirs. In 1858 a commissioner sold 300 acres of the late Hulton Kellam to Samuel K. Shield and because of his ownership the post office called Shield's later came into being, as well as Shield's Wharf on the creek, which ceased to exist following the demise of the steamboat traffic. After the death of Shield, his large holdings were divided amon his heirs, followed by some inter-family transactions, resulting in Alfred H. Shield becoming the owner of the home place of 115 acres. In 1938 a commissioner sold the property to Francis C. Duer and his wife Billye Atkinson Duer and 2 years later they sold as 122 acres to Lucius J. and Dorothy D. Kellam, thus bringing this land back into the Kellam family once more. Tract A15B is known as Mount Pleasant. A little salt-box-type house burned in 1938. Esau (of John of John) Jacob
M, b. February 1750, d. before 10 April 1797
Birth* | February 1750 | Esau was born in February 1750 at Northampton Co, VA. In her 1987 report to E. Spencer Wise (1914-1995) entitled "The Immediate Ancestors of Esau Jacob (1750-1797)," Mary Francis Carey concluded that Esau Jacob, born Feb 1750 and named for his father's uncle Esau, was the son of John Jacob (1728-1751) and his wife Mary (Abdell?), who was the son of John Jacob Junr (1707-1728), who was the son of John Jacob (c1675- 1729/30). Esau Jacob was raised by his father's uncle Thomas Jacob (c1722-1795), who had a son named Teackle of approximately Esau's age. It is suggested that Esau named a son Teackle after him, his father's first cousin. He would have considered Teackle as close as a brother. The records she searched gave no indication as to why Thomas Jacob named one of his sons Teackle..1,2 |
Est Settm't Father's* | 27 August 1751 | He was named in the settlement of his father's estate on 27 August 1751 at Northampton Co, VA. A division of the estate of John Jacob dec'd was presented on 25 Aug 1751 by Mary Jacob and signed by John Walter, Arthur Downing and Salathiel Harrison. Thomas Jacob was one of the few debtors. After debts were paid, the estate was divided between the widow Mary and Esau Jacob, orphan. The latter's part was appraised at £6.12.7.3 |
Bound Out* | 12 September 1758 | He was bound out on 12 September 1758 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Esau Jacob, aged "8 years last February," orphan of John Jacob, was bound to Thomas Jacob. (NOTE: Thomas would have been his great-uncle, the brother of his grandfather John Jacob Junr.)4,2 |
Marriage* | circa 1775 | He married (-----) (-----) circa 1775 at Northampton Co, VA.1 |
Will - Mentioned in* | 13 November 1776 | Esau was mentioned in a will on 13 November 1776 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as Easu Jacobs and given a felt hat in the will of Benjamin Heath.5 |

Chancery suit* | 1 December 1801 | He was named in a chancery suit on 1 December 1801 at Northampton Co, VA.
