Biography* | 15 April 1876 | Remarkable Pedestrianism - On Saturday, the 15th instant, Mr. Christopher T. Satchell, of Wisewille, Accomac County, Va, walked fifty miles in eleven hours and thirty-three minutes. The feat was performed at Drummondtown to decide a wager of a hundred dollars that no man in the county could walk fifty miles in twelve hours. Mr. Satchell did not train himself for the walk, having worked at his usual occupation as muler the whole of the previous week. He is forty years old, weighs one hundred and forty-three pounds and is five feet six inches in height. He was clad in his ordinary working suit, and took no nourishment during the walk, except a small quantity of fresh milk.1 |
