Thomas S. Wright1
M, b. circa 1772, d. August 1848
Biography* | | He was one of the five sons of Henry Wright and Rachel Pettit Wright. His father died in 1793, leaving him, by survey, 20 acres of land Henry's grandmother, Mary Wright had bought in 1693. Thomas was to receive 5 additional acres at the death of his uncle William, land that Henry had leased to William in 1784 for William's "natural life". As has been shown, Thomas Wright bought the shares of his brothers and two sisters between 1800 and 1831. The share he bought from sister Hessey in 1800, he and wife Rebecca sold to brother Edmund Wright on 15 April 1803 (DC Deeds 1800 - 1806, p. 260), the same day he purchased Edmund's share. On 16 February 1804, Edmund Wright "(son of Henry)" sold Hessey's 23 acres to Kendall Colony (p. 309). Thomas Wright bought 8 acres from Kendall and Tabitha Colony on 18 January 1808 (Deeds 1801 - 1810 p.41) . On 31 December 1836, Thomas Wright, Senr bought 26 acres from Colmer C. Hinman and wife Lovey H. for $400, land near Metompkin, bordered "northwest by lands of aforesaid Thomas Wright, Senr" (Deeds 1835 - 1837, p. 526). On 13 January 1835, George P. Barnes, Senr deeded 1 acre for $1.00 to "Thomas Wright, Senr, Edmund Bell, William C. White, George Warner and William P. Barnes, Trustees appted by Modest Town Baptist Church of the Metompkin meeting house --- for only purpose of Building a house of Worship for the benefit and use of the regular Baptists as long as a house shall be kept up on the premises for that purpose" (Deeds 1837 - 1839, p. 18). The old Metompkin Baptist Church in the area had been destroyed by a tornado in 1833, but it was not until 1852 that a new building to replace it was built on the 1 acre above. Land bought* | 19 November 1859 | He bought land on 19 November 1859 at Accomack Co, VA. William P. Evans and wife Esther A. Evans sold William P. Davis 100 acres of land near Horn Town for $1,200 and another deed from Evans for "several messuages and tenements formerly owned by Wiliam Whealton." William Whealton of Arthur had bought this land in 1825 from commissioners selling it to settle the estate of James Marshall, and sold it to William P. Evans on 25 Aug 1855. These 4 deeds, giving bordering land as owned by several different Marshalls, Edward H. Ker, William D. Cropper, Samuel Downing's heirs, Barbara White and John W. Rowley, appear to locate it south of Horntown, west of Popular Grove. John W. Rowley's wife was Elizabeth A., daughter of William Welbourne Sr., who bought nearby land from William White in 1809. This land came to be owned by John W. Rowley early in 1855.8 |

This land was north of Horntown, behind and west of the 160 acre Solomon T. John farm, which bordered the road to Sign Post and was, itself, part of the original White Hall land. The entire 293 acre farm is now (1984) tended by Willie A. Davis Jr., great-great-grandson of William P. Davis. He owns the Johnson land and rents the "Jim Davis" farm from the heirs of H.E. Kelley.11 |

The will of George "Lyttleton", probated on 24 June 1867 shows he had five children: Thomas, Richard, Samuel, Mary Baker and Sally. He left part of a daughter Sally's inheritance to a granddaughter, Pamelia Hickman.12 |
Anecdote* | | It is assumed that William P. Davis moved his family to the White Hall land after buying it in late 1870, and was living there when he died. He is probably buried on this farm. The 1880 census shows his oldest son, James T. Davis, living there (between Greenbackville and Horntown households) as head of household #176, with wife Susan, mother Sally, and brother George.3 |

Gibb, or any 3 of them, appraise the personal estate of William P. Davis. As part of the settlement of the estate, Abel T. Johnson, special commissioner, sold the 100 acre Whealton-Evans property at public auction, in front of Thomas Pettit's Hotel at Horntown, on 30 Oct 1876, to James H. Pettit for $406.13 |
