Anecdote* | 8 March 1837 | A eulogy for James, written by R.W. Williams March 8, 1837 in Locustville, was printed in the Christian Advocate and Journal, March 31, 1837. "I have no doubt it will be of painful interest to many who read the Advocate, especially the preachers who have traveled Accomack circuit within the last forth-five years, to learn that our highly-esteemed brother James Ashby, senior, is no more. He departed this life at his late residence in Accomack co., East (sic) Shore Virginia, on the 10th of January last (1837) in the seventieth year of his age. The circumstances which cause the first serious impressions to be made on the mind of father Ashby, and from which he dated his convictions, were such as rarely occur. In the year 1789 he, in company with three others, was out at sea in a small boat, fishing for drums. The boat by some means upset, and the three that were with him very soon were consigned to a watery grave. Father Ashby clung to the bottom of the boat; but being without paddle or oar, he expected certainly every moment to be drowned. It was there on the bottom of his canoe that he promised God if he would rescue him from his impending danger, he would seek religion and spend the remainder of his days in his service. At this critical period, while the canoe was drifting among the breakers, a boat came to his assistance; and contrary to his expectations he was landed safely on the shore. He immediately attached himself to the Methodist Episcopal Church - it being at that time in its infancy in this country. Two years after, on the night of the first day of May, 1791, God spoke peace and consolation to his troubled soul. Much indeed might be said about the character of father Ashby - but suffice it to say that as a husband he was exceedingly tender and affectionate - as a neighbor he was kind and benevolent - especially to the poor, to whose necessities he often ministered; as a class leader (in which capacity he served the Church thirty-seven years) he was acceptable, faithful, and useful; as a Christian he was exemplary and devout; he earnestly sought the influence of the Holy Spirit in connection with the knowledge of the Scripture; made the approbation of Christ his principal object, and carefully imitated His example in fulfilling 'all righteousness,' and made the glory of God the chief object of his life. When he felt his dissolution was approaching he was not terrified or surprised, knowing that death would be to him the gate of endless joy, and that the rod and staff of God would comfort him through the chilling waters of the sea of death. A few days before his death, I conversed with him about his future prospects. He said he had been expecting the message for several years; 'and, 'said he,' the nearer I approach the grave the brighter my prospects are for life and immortality;' he commenced repeating with ecstasy, the hymn, 'How happy are they" etc. That was the last time I saw him. A few days after, the lamp that had burned for three score years and ten went out. His funeral sermon was preached on Thursday, at eleven o'clock, A.M. by his particular friend, Rev. John S. Taylor, from Rev. 14:13, to a large and serious audience, and his body deposited in the tomb, where it will remain until he shall be summoned to the resurrection of life everlasting. 'Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his.18'" |
Burial* | His body was interred at Heron Hill, Locustville, Accomack Co, VA. The tombstone book shows him as James Ashby, who died 10 Jan 1857(sic), age 70 years. However, his will was probated 30 Jan 1837, so evidently he died 10 Jan 1837..2,1 |
