Anecdote* | | He resided in the Cashville area of Acc Co, VA. He lived on and operated a farm owned by his father which was across the road from the 'Boggs Place' where his father lived. He was a merchant and a partner in a mercantile business with William Spencer Finney. The store was at the junction of the Slutkill Neck Road and Broadway Road. Later the partnership was dissolved and Finney continued with the store. He went into business with William Thomas Rodgers in operation of Finney's Wharf and store at about 1908. When Rodgers died in 1914 he took over the business and ran it until his death. His businesses were eventually included a barrel factory, a farm machinery business, a wood yard and a small building supply business. He would sell to Tangiermen who tied up at the wharf. He also farmed. In the 1920s he set up a sawmilling operation in Lightfoot, VA in James City Co near Williamsburg. His son-in-law, Ernest Underhill Boggs and his son Charles H. Boggs ran it for a while but it closed down in the late 1920s and Charles moved back to Finney's Wharf. He was a director of the Eastern Shore Produce Exchange.1 |

To daughter Ann Upshur Bayly my houses & lots in Drummond Town & the lands which I purchased of William Edmunds & wife & James is to pay to daughter Ann £500. To daughter Elizabeth Upshur Bayly my plantation lying on Matchapungo whereon old James Church now lives & for son John to pay my daughter Elizabeth £500. If my wife has a child or children by me that child shall have equal share as my daughter Elizabeth. Each of my children John, James, Ann & Elizabeth shall contribute to this child. Bayly of Mount Custis near Accomac and his wife Jane Coward Addison, wrote a letter to the pension office in Washington regarding the pension of Catherine B. Cropper, widow of General John Cropper. This was three months after her death. He enclosed a paper which he said authorized him to draw the pension of Catherine Cropper. It appears that his attempt to get the pension was not fruitful. Samuel T. Bayly and his sister had already inherited property at Hill's Farm in Accomack County, which they later sold.5 |
