Anecdote* | | Clarence Donald Burton (1900-1962) told this story about his grandfather Jehu- "Someone was stealing Jehu's corn, so he hollowed out some ears of corn and put his name on a small piece of paper and put in the corn. Later he went to the suspected man's home and found one of his 'labeled' ears of corn in his possession". Jehu did not marry Jencie Steen. His will from Sussex County courthouse in Georgetown, DE Book 14, page 49, obtained by me 11/2/92 with Mrs. Nora Miller Turman, states "I give and bequeth to my six illiginate children ....by Gincey Steen". Gincey (Jencie, Jency) was referred to by great-grandchild (Louise Kopplin - daughter of Emma Burton - daughter of Woolsey Burton) as "that Indian woman". There was a law in Delaware making it illegal to marry an Indian because they were considered "colored" - that law was later rescinded. I have photo of his son Woolsey, and he was certainly not colored. The Kopplin chindren, and their mother did have straight black hair and high cheek bones. Jehu was undoubtedly married before he began to have children by Jencie Steen, in the Census of 1850, Sussex County DE. (a photocopy in my possession) shows Jehu Burton to be a 55 yr. old farmer, with those in house: Elizabeth Burton - 17 yr old, John (Jehu ?) Burton - age 21 a sailor, Robert Burton - age 13, William Burton - age 11, Maria Burton - age 8, Ginsey Steen - 24, Peter Steen - age 3, and Nancy Burton - age 1. All of the children are listed as "Burtons" and some were too old to have been Ginsey's children !! Sussex County Census of 1860 (photocopy in my possession ) shows Jehu Burton to be 65 year old farmer, with household of Jensey Steen - age 32, Nancy (no last name) - age 12, Ann (no last name) - age 10, Woolsey (no last name) - age 6, George C. (no last name) - age 4, Sarah C. (no last name) - age 1, Peter Dolby - age 15, and Nancy Johnson - age 31. Jehu lived to be 83 yrs. old. Buried at Presybertian Church in Ocean View, DE per Iva Barto.4 |
