Samuel (78) Marshall1,2
M, b. circa 1704, d. 1784
Birth* | circa 1704 | Samuel was born circa 1704 at Marumsco, Som Co, MD. This Samuel Marshall gave his age on 28 Jun 1753 as 48 and in 1759 as 56 (Som Jud 1752/54:127 & 1760/63:37)..1 |
Anecdote* | 1723 | In 1723 and 1724 his name appears in the Annamessex Hundred household of his uncle Randall Long. In 1725 and 1727 he is listed in the Pocomoke Hundred household of his half-brother Isaac Boston. He was the head of his own household in Pocomoke Hundred begining in 1730 and had Thomas Marshall in his household until 1738. In 1737 Samuel, Thomas and George Marshall lived in a row between William Beauchamp and Smith Horsey. There is no indication from tax lists that he had sons born before 1738. |
Marriage* | circa 1740 | He married Grace Adams, daughter of Philip Adams and Ellis Taylor, circa 1740.3 |
Anecdote | 1744 | In 1744 he was head of household in Annamessex Hundred. In 1747 and 1748 he was head of household in Manokin Hundred (on or near now Old Princess Anne Road). In 1749, 1750, 1751, 1752, 1753 and 1754 (next to Thomas Marshall Jr.) he was head household in Annamessex Hundred. In 1757 and 1759 he was in Pocomoke Hundred, the latter two years between Samuel Adams and William Kersey (Carsley). |
Anecdote | 31 May 1758 | Samuel is shown in 1757 and 1759 at Pocomoke 100 and there's a suit on 31 May 1758 in Accomack Co, VA, when John Williams brought a suit against him "and the Sheriff having returned that he had left a true copy of the Petition and Summons at the place of abode of the said Samuel" (Acc Orders 1753-63, p. 244). So Samuel was evidently back and forth between Acc Co, VA and Som Co, MD. |
Anecdote | 29 December 1763 | On 29 Dec 1763 petitions brought by John Tropley against Samuel Martial, Senr and Samuel Martial, Junr were dismissed (Acc Orders 1753-63, pp. 649-50). |
Anecdote | 23 September 1768 | In a deposition on 23 September 1768 in a boundary commission for Thomas Marshall on Mitchell's Lot, Thomas White, aged 67 stated: I always understood and allowed that the head of Turkey Branch was about thirty or forty yards from where Samuel Marshall formerly builded a dwelling house and dwell therein and about a north east course from the said house and where Benjamin Lankfords ditch that is cut in the head of Turkey Branch makes an elbow towards Samuel Marshalls house aforesaid and about ten yards to the northward of an old well that was formerly diged by Samuel Marshall for the use of the house aforesaid and that the said Turkey Branch comes out of Morumsco Damms near the head of Murumsco Creek and that the tract of land called Mitchells Lott maintained in the commission hereto annexed begins at the mouth of the said Turkey Branch. (JR 1767/69:242).
|
Anecdote | 9 June 1773 | The last account filed for Philip Adams was on 9 June 1773 by executor William Adams. Samuel Marshall received a payment on account out of the estate. The account balance before debts were paid was £383.2.4 and afterward £10.16.11. Maryland Prerogative Court records 68:32. |
Anecdote | 4 July 1773 | Samuel Marshall was apparently a waterman and a trapper, for he was renting land from "the Trustees for Sanford Charity by 4 July 1773, when he had paid a year's rent of 1611 pounds of tobacco (Sanford Charity Record Book, p. 1). When the trustees met the following year, on 20 July 1774, Samuel Marshall had paid the same rent (p. 2). |
Anecdote | 23 February 1774 | On 23 Feb 1774 in Accomack Co a petition was brought by Hugh McBride and John Craig, plaintiffs, against Samuel Marshall, defendant, for debt on an account. The attorneys were Luther Martin and George Corbin. The petition was dismissed and the defendant was to recover costs. The petition sued out by McBride and Craig against Thomas Marshall was dismissed, the Sheriff having returned that the defendant had no residence in Acc Co (Acc Orders 1774-77, p. 50). |
Anecdote | 20 October 1776 | On 20 Oct 1776 Samuel Marshall, aged about 73, deposed in the boundary commission on the tract Dublin for Sarah Taylor and stated he saw a marked post standing in the edge of the marsh about thirty to forty years previously and that Robert and Elias Taylor both told him the post was the divisional post between them but the post is now gone (JR 1776/79:112). |
Death* | 1784 | Samuel died in 1784 at Accomack Co, VA. Samuel Marshall's name appears on the Acc Co tax list for 1784, as does Samuel Marshall, Junr. There is no record of Samuel Marshall Sr.'s death in Acc Co. He owned no land and left no will. He had apparently died before 1787, when the tax list of that year shows only one Samuel Marshall. Two of his sons, Benjamin and Thomas, were renting Sanford Charity land in 1800, 1802 and 1805 through 1809 (pp. 24 & 28).. |

Thomas (79) Marshall1,2
M, b. circa 1712, d. before 20 June 1786
Birth* | circa 1712 | Thomas was born circa 1712 at Marumsco, Som Co, MD. In four depositions in which Thomas Marshall reported his age, his birth falls between 1707 and 1715; tax lists suggest 1712/14. On 20 Oct 1776 he was age 69 but on 20 May 1775 he was age 60..3 |
Marriage* | before 18 May 1736 | He married Jane Mitchell before 18 May 1736. Jane was the widow of Abraham Haith..1,4 |
Biography* | | March 1736/7 Thomas Marshall and wife Jane filed the administration account on the estate of Abraham Heath. On 6/18/1740 John White, eldest son of Stevens White, son of John White the elder, with wife Mary White, sold to Thomas Marshall and wife Jane Marshall 100A "Mitchells Lott." (Dryden, Som. Land, p. 297) Jane was living in 1748 when daughter Jane was born and probably 1754 when Martha was born. It's a guess that Jane didn't die until just before Thomas deeded away all his lands to his two sons in 1774. Ruth Dryden's Som. Land Records (p.369) shows 1774 Thomas Marshall, wife Grace Adams Marshall, gave to son Isaac Marshall 39A. The deed reads: On 20 April 1774 Thomas Marshall of Somerset County deeded to Isaac Marshall son of the aforesaid Thomas, of same, for love and affection and five shillings the plantation whereon Isaac now lives, 240 1/2 acres of Bostons Chance, 25 acres of Boston Green, 39 acres of Shoemaker Meadow, 19 2/3 acres of Bostons Purchase and 200 acres of Bostons Purchase (E:158). No wife relinquished dower on the 1774 deed. 1747 probably the Thomas Marshall of Somerset who purchased 50A "Venture" from Francis & Mary Carey of NC; his brother, Samuel, was named in will of Abigail Tomlinson of "Venture" On 6 March 1758 Samuel Adams sold to Thomas Marshall for £42.10 19 1/3 acres of Bostons Purchase and 58 2/3 acres of Shoemakers Meadow; Sarah wife of Samuel consenting (B:201). Samuel Adams was the son of Jacob and nephew to Philip Adams d. 1772, so this deed, plus the remuneration which seems to be fair market value, cannot lend weight to the argument that Grace Adams m. Thomas Marshall. 1730 in household of his brother Samuel at Pocomoke 100 With Jeffrey Long appointed gdn to children of Isaac Boston in Boston's will 4/30/1751. Probably the Thomas Marshall, Church Warden, Coventry Parish, 1763 (Torrence, p. 198) April 20, 1774 Stephen Marshall of Accomack Co. from Thomas (X) Marshall of Somerset: A gift of 4 tracts where Thomas now lives in Somerset - "Marshall's Inheritance", "Priveledge", "Turkey Trap", and "Mitchell's Lot" ? 481 acres. Somerset County, Liber F?O?27, p. 160 April 20, 1774 Thomas Marshall gave to Isaac Marshall 240 1/2A "Bostons Chance" with "Bostons Green," "Shoemakers Meadow," "Bostons Purchase," etc. with 523 2/3A. 1783 tax list shows Isaac Marshall with 240 1/2A "Bostons Chance." 1808 Thomas Marshall of Isaac sold 100A "Bostons Chance" to Asia Dicks. 1808 William Marshall of Isaac, wife Sarah, sold to brother Thomas Marshall 100A "Bostons Chance". (Dryden, Som. Land) Thomas had land at Saxis Island, Accomack Co., VA: 1776 Stephen stopped Accomack processioners from establishing the boundary line between his father, Thomas Marshall, and Daniel Hall (Acc Orders 1774-1777, p. 427.) |
Anecdote* | 30 November 1742 | On 30 Nov 1742 Thomas Marshall planter, secured a grant, "Marshall Inheritance," 438 acres on Morumsco Creek, part of which he sold in 1746 to Jeffrey Long. |

Land gave* | 20 April 1774 | Thomas deeded land as a gift on 20 April 1774. On 20 Apr 1774 Thomas Marshall, for love and affection and 5 shillings, conveyed to Stephen Marshall of Acc Co, VA, 581 acres: "Marshall's Inheritance" (309 acres), "Turkey Trap" (44 acres), part of "Mitchells Lott" called "Chance" (75 acres) and "Privilege" (53 acres) (Som. Deeds 27:160). On 21 Apr 1774 Thomas Marshall deeded to son Isaac 523 acres: "Boston's Green" (240 acres), "Chance" (25 acres), "Shoemakers Meadow" (39 acres), "Saywards Purchase" (19 acres) and "Boston's Purchase" (200 acres) (Som. Deeds 27:158).. |
