The patent was issued on 11 Oct 1646 for 250 acres on Naswattock Creek adjacent to James Bruse & land formerly belonging to Henry Wede. (NOTE: It seems odd that this was the first mention of Lewis White as a headright as he was first shown in the local court records over 10 years earlier. Perhaps he went back to England and returned by this date.)16,17 |
Court - plaintiff | 28 July 1645 | He was a plaintiff in a court case on 28 July 1645 at Northampton Co, VA. It is therefore ordered that the sherriff shall be authorized to make seizure of so much estate of those persons which are deliquent as shall be sufficient to make full satisfaction for the corn due to said Lewis White. (NOTE: Whitelaw states that it is assumed that when Shore men were called for military duty they were quartered at Fort Royal.) (NOTE: In February 1645, the colony ordered the construction of three frontier forts: Fort Charles at the falls of the James, Fort James on the Chickahominy, and Fort Royal at the falls of the York. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Powhatan_Wars.)19,20 |

My loving wife Kathryne White residual legatee. Witt: John Webb aged 27, Phillipp Richards, John Sellivant, William Johnson. (Note: His "antient" title noted again - f. 116. Occasionally a testator, in the will's preface, describes himself as anicent (elderly), and presumably antient is a misspelling. In Lewis White's case the word is specifically employed as a title, and since the dictionary states that 'ancient' is a corruption of the word 'ensign,' and based upon his service at Fort Royal (1645-1651), p. 100), he may have been (Ensign) Lewis White.)23 |

Jane Marshman1
F, b. circa 1688, d. before 24 July 1713
Birth* | circa 1688 | Jane was born circa 1688 at Northampton Co, VA. |
Will - Father's* | 13 April 1691 | Jane was named in her father's will on 13 April 1691 at Northampton Co, VA.2 |
Land inherited* | 1691 | She inherited land in 1691 at tract N43, between Cherition & Eastville, Northampton Co, VA. In 1660 Katherin Pennell left my plantation to her husband John. In 1661 he left to his son John. In 1663 there was patent to John Pannull for 260 acres formerly granted to Katherine Pannull, but no patent to her is of record. Her land may have included all or a part of the Pharoe Young and Thomas patents which she had inherited but no proof of this was found. In 1673 John Penewell traded his 260 acres here to Henry Marshman for the 200 acres of N26. In 1686 Henry Marshman (wife Sarah) left to sons Luke and Henry; nothing more was found about the latter. In 1691 Luke Masman (wife Elizabeth) left to a daughter Jane. In 1698 John and Elizabeth (Marshman) Fisher released to her daughter Jane any dower interest in the land lately belonging to Henry Marshman which descended to his son Luke and then to the latter's daughter Jane. After this there was a complete gap in the record of this land until bounds for adjacent lands give a Jacob Pitts as living here. No purchase by Pitts was found, but in 1742 he married Rachel Kelley and the land must have been hers. (NOTE: Whitelaw was not aware that in 1732 Sarah Sheppard, widow of Joseph Sheppard, left the 260 acre plantation were she lived to her daughter Rachel Kelly (under 21) and for want of her heirs to Sarah's brother-in-law Kendall Jacob. Evidently Jane died and it went to a younger sister Sarah, who was born after her father Luke wrote his will.)3 |
Death* | before 24 July 1713 | She died before 24 July 1713 at Northampton Co, VA. Jane was evidently dec'd by this date as her grandmother Mary Benthall named daughter Elizabeth Fisher, sons Daniel and William Benthall, granddaughters Sarah Jaocb, Ann Clegg and Elizabeth Jacob and John Fisher, but did not mention her.4 |

Maj. Thomas Marshall1,2
M, b. circa 1692, d. before 10 March 1761
Birth* | circa 1692 | Thomas was born circa 1692 at Northampton Co, VA.3 |
Anecdote | 1717 | A Thomas Marshall was testator to the will of Alexander Maddux on April 10, 1717, Somerset County, MD. This was probably Thomas d. 1760 of Northampton, as the Thomas d. 1786 of Somerset was a small boy in 1717. From the other witnesses to Maddux' will, although it was recorded in Somerset County, it may have been witnessed in Northampton County. It does not appear that Thomas Marshall was in Somerset in 1717 or a relationship, if any, to Alexander Maddux is not known other than being a near neighbor to Maddux' Northampton property. Thomas Marshall was a member of the House of Burgesses from the Eastern Shore, Northampton County, 1723-1734. (research of C. Hayward Marshall Sr. and W. Marshall Scott) Thomas was Sheriff and Justice of the Peace for Northampton County. He served as a member of the House of Burgesses 1723-1724. He was a Major in the militia and signed his mark "TM." (James H. Marshall). In 1752 Thomas Marshall of Northampton Co. VA, appointed administrator of estate of Elisabeth Dashiell, widow of Col. George Dashiell, of Somerset Co. MD. (research of Vernon L. Skinner) Elizabeth Dashiell is mother of George Dashiell, Jr., who married Thomas' step-great granddaughter, Rose Fisher. She was the widow of James Fairfax d.c. 1739. Thomas Marshall had been a witness to the will of James Fairfax. Rose Fisher (who would marry George Dashiell, Jr.) was only 7 years old, so the relationship of Thomas Marshall to Elizabeth Fairfax Dashiell existed prior to the marriage of Rose and George Dashiell, Jr. Rose Fisher & George Dashiell, Jr. name a son, James Fairfax Dashiell. George Dashiell was named next of kin in prerogative court for the estate of Thomas Marshall in 1761. Circumstantially, it appears Elizabeth Fairfax Dashiell is Thomas' sister. Thomas' will was filed both in Northampton County, VA and Somerset Co., MD. William Allen (his son-in-law) was a creditor and was probably in Somerset at the time and this may be at least one reason by his will was filed in Maryland. That Thomas owned any land in Somerset has not been identified. Thomas' son, Esme, was in Worcester County in 1760 and his son, Thomas John, was in Dorcester. Thomas' will was dated January 19, 1760, Northampton County, VA, and proved March 10, 1761. It appeared in both Northampton Co., VA and in Somerset Co. MD. (EB4, p. 75, Clerk's Office, Princess Ann, MD, copied by William Marshall Scott; James H. Marshall, Wills & Administrations of Northampton Co., p. 388) Thomas Marshall, Gentleman, Somerset Co. MD, 263 pounds, 3 shillings, 10 pence, February 25, 1761 August 17, 1762, William Allyn Creditor, next of kin George Dashiell, executors Thomas Marshall & Esme Marshall.
