Death* | 13 January 2009 | James died on 13 January 2009 at Salisbury, Wicomico Co, MD, at age 94. SALISBURY -- James Thomas Marshall, 94, went to be the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009. He was born May 5, 1914 in Temperanceville, a son of Mary P. and Lorenzo T. (L.T.) Marshall. On May 9, 1936, he married Dorothy Francis Marriner of Princess Anne, God blessed them with 63 years together. For most of his life, Jim was a carpenter, working at many different types of construction. He was driving piling for a temporary railroad bridge across the Potomac River, from Alexandria, Va., to Shepard's Landing, Md., when he heard the news about Pearl Harbor. He was unable to enlist in the military at that time and that disappointed him greatly. To assist with the war effort, he worked on the construction of Anacostia Naval Air Station at Bolling Field. He also went to Iceland to help with military construction there. He really loved the Icelandic people and their country. One of the people he met there, later came to work at a fish packing plant on the Eastern Shore and they resumed their friendship. His children remember him working on the bridge over the river in the City Park in Salisbury. They often talk about seeing him standing in the water in his coveralls with no shirt on, becoming many shades darker because of the combination of sun and creosote. They also joke about not being able to misbehave at school because they never knew when he might be present as building inspector for new construction for Wicomico County Board of Education. He helped with the construction of the Salisbury Mall on Civic Avenue. He moved to Florida after the completion of the mall. While in Florida, he helped with the construction of the Coral Ridge Baptist Church, where among other jobs, he worked 335 feet in the air helping to install the stained glass windows in the steeple. He retired from carpentry while in Florida. After his retirement, he worked as a "Jack of all Trades" in Blood's Grove, a citrus grove in Del Ray Beach, Fla. He and Dorothy permanently moved back to the Shore in the mid-1980s, where they lived in Princess Anne until 1997, before moving to Atria in Salisbury. Jim continued to live at Atria when Dot went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 14, 1999, staying there until October 2003, when he moved to Wicomico Nursing Home. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed meeting people and talking to them. He also enjoyed gathering together with the men in his family for a friendly game of cards and dominoes. He liked to travel with his wife, traveling throughout the lower 48 states and parts of Canada. He is survived by three daughters, Jean M. Metz and her husband, Joe, of Princess Anne, Doris E. Bailey and her husband, Major, of Mardela Springs and Lynn M. Prado of Salisbury; two sons, Wayne Thomas Marshall and his wife, Marilyn of Salisbury and Michael V. Marshal of Falls Church, Va; two sisters, Margaret Gibson of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Earlene Seidel and her husband, Louis, of Salisbury; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Paige and Bob. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Christ United Methodist Church in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Coastal Hospice in Salisbury; or to Gideon Memorial Bibles..2 |

Sampson Marshall Sr.1
M, b. circa 1750, d. circa 1815
Birth* | circa 1750 | Sampson was born circa 1750 at Accomack Co, VA.2 |
Marriage* | circa 1770 | He married Mary 'Polly' (-----) circa 1770.3 |
Biography* | | Sampson Marshall's name appeared on the Acc Co 1784 tax list, grouped with 4 of his brothers. He was on the 1787 tax list "A" with no white males 16-20, which implied that he had no sons born before 1771. His only tithables were 1 horse or mule and 2 head of cattle. On 1 Nov 1787 he was a defendent in a suit "William Warrington administrator of Joseph Warrington vs. John Parks and Sampson Marshall" (Acc Orders 1787-1790, p. 50). In 1790 he was a juror (Acc Orders 1787-1790, p. 583). On 24 Nov 1794 his name appeared as witness to a Beavens/Absolem Lewis deed involving land near the mouth of Muddy Creek (Acc Deed 1793-1797, p. 217). On 23 May 1795 he purchased 100 acres of land and marsh from Arthur Watson for 3 pounds 10 shillings. It was at the mouth of Cattail Creek, running a south course to include the Indian Ridge and the Cross Ridge together with all improvements appurtaining (Acc Deeds 1793-1797, p. 278). Sampson's oldest son, Henry Marshall, witnessed the deed. On May 15, 1800 he and his wife Mary sold this same 100 acres to Absalom Lewis for 4 pounds 10 shillings (Acc D.C. Wills & Deeds 1800-1806, p. 29). The 1800 Census shows Sampson Marshall "Saxis I.," as over 45 years old (50). His oldest son Henry was not in Sampson's household in 1800 as he was listed separately as Henry Marshall "C.T." assumed to mean Cattail. His 2 daughters were both married and out of the house before 1800. There were 5 other males in Sampson's household: 1 under 10 (Sampson's grandson son Isaac, 6, s/o Robert), 2 aged 10-16 (Sampson, 15, & Samuel, 15), and 2 aged 16-26 (Robert, 25 and John, 20). There were 3 females: 1 under 10 (Sampson's granddaughter Elizabeth, 4, d/o Robert), 1 aged 16-26 (Robert's first wife, 25), and 1 aged 26-45 (Sampson's wife Mary, 45). In 1810 Sampson Marshall was again listed as over 45 (60). Evidently his son Robert was still living at home since he was not listed separately. The other males listed were: 1 male 10-16 (Isaac, 16, s/o Robert) and 2 males 16-26 (Sampson, 25 and Robert, 35) who's age does not match). Apparently 2 sons had married between 1800 and 1810 and moved out of the house. This would have been John, who married in 1802, and Samuel, who married in 1809. There were 3 females listed in addition to Sampson wife who was over 45 (55). One was under 10 ((-----) Marshall, 5, d/o Robert and Ester), 1 aged 10-16 (Elizabeth, 14, d/o Robert), and 1 aged 26-45 (Ester, 30, 2nd w/o Robert). A Sampson Marshall appears in 1820 living near Chesire and Lucas families, but since his age was under 45, he was likely Sampson Sr.'s son Sampson Jr. Evidently Sampson Sr. died intestate, without a will or administration, between 1810 and 1820. It appears that his widow Polly (Mary), over 45 years old, was listed next to John Hall and James Chesire in 1820. The descendants of Sampson and Mary Marshall apparently lived in the area of Cattail and Messongo Creeks. |
