Stewart, for the sale use and benefit of my daughters, Harriet S. Cottingham and Rosy A. Stewart, the sum of three hundred dollars; the same to be equally used and divided between them by him. And I hereby authorise, empower and direct my said son, in their equal proportion of the same, to pay to them and each of them, in such sum or sums, either of the interest and principal of the said gift, as the necessity or interest of either or both of them may require, and he shall deem advisable and their interest and welfare may require. And I also give to him, my said son, Hugh G. Stewart, for the sole use and benefit of my said daughters, Harriet S. Cottingham and Rosy A. Stewart, my Negro woman called Ara. And should my wife, Sarah Ann, refuse to accept the sum of fifty dollars herein before devised to her in lieu of her dower in said Negro woman, I give the said sum of fifty dollars to my said son, Hugh G. Stewart, to be equally divided between and distributed as herein before directed between my daughters, Harriet S. Cottingham and Rosy A. Stewart, as aforesaid. Fourthly, I give and devise to my son, Hugh G. Stewart, the sum of two hundred and twenty five dollars for the sole use and benefit of my daughter, Tabitha Margaret Susan Wilkins, and I direct and authorise my said son to pay to, and to the order of, my said daughter, Tabitha M. S. Wilkins, any portion or part of the said sum, devised for her use and benefit, either of interest or principal thereof, as shall be deemed by him advisable and beneficial for her interest or necessities may require. Fifthly, I give and devise to my son, Lewis W. Stewart, my colt called Georgeanna, and the sum of three hundred dollars; also a bed and bolster - of the third choice to be by him selected. Sixthly, I give and devise to my son, Hugh G. Stewart, my Negro man named Goe, and also my mare, called Sally Harman. Seventhly, I give and devise to my grand-daughters, Cleavland and Tabitha Dunton, the daughters of my daughter Ann Dunton, the sum of twenty five dollars, each. Eighthly, I give and devise to my daughters, Harriet S. Cottingham and Rosy A. Stewart, one bed, bolster, bedstead and a full and complete bed furniture for the same of the second choice to be by them selected. Ninthly, I give and devise all the rest and remainder of my estate of every kind and description, after the payment of my debts and the legacies aforementioned and specified to be equally divided between my daughter, Elizabeth B. Nicholson, and sons, William B. Stewart, James H. Stewart, John L. Stewart, and Joshua B. Stewart. Tenthly, It is my will that if my absent sons, or either of them, (or their, or either of their descendants), whom I long since have presumed to be deceased, Thomas B. Stewart and George B. Stewart, shall however, hereafter make known their existence, that they, nor their, or either of their heirs shall make claim to or demand of any part or portion of my estate whatever. Eleventhly and lastly, I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my sons, John L. Stewart and Lewis W. Biography* | 1857 | In a letter dated 13 Mar 1938 from Mark C. Lewis to James E. Mears, Mr. Lewis states that James H. Crowson, a life-long resident of the Hunting Creek section, told him that James E. Mears' grandmother had a sister, Elizabeth Young, of whom his grandmother did not mention to Mr. Mears. Elizabeth Young married William Annis, who in his youth was extremely rough man, his sole interests being trapping, drinking and fighting; that in 1857, Elizabeth, in despair at the way things were going, put the kids in bed with the admonition that they remain there until their father came home, and disappeared from the Shore. It was said the she went to Baltimore and stayed with her brother for a while, but years later two of daughters went to look for her, but were unable to get any trace of her.3 |
