Death* | 16 February 1998 | He died on 16 February 1998 at Florida at age 62.1 |
Biography* | 15 April 1998 | Harold Howard Jr. spent his life trying to bridge the gap between two worlds, so it was fitting that the memorial to his passing tried to do the same. Family and friends of the man known among American Indians as Red Jacket gathered in Parksley Saturday to remember Howard and his efforts to promote Indian heritage. "He was an exception to the rule of the average mentality that says its best to forget the Indian heritage," Howard's brother, Norris, said "He thought that heritage would be eventually lost if he didn't try to preserve it." Chief of the Pocomoke Occohannock Tribe and co-founder of the Remnant Bands of American Indians of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Harold Howard died in Florida last month at the age of 62. His family and friends laid his ashes to rest in Modest Town this weekend in a ceremony that coupled Christian and American Indian rituals. After a rendition of the congregational hymn, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," Nanticoke Tribe member Odette Wright delivered a version of "Amazing Grace" that meshed English and Cherokee tongues. Alternating languages with Verses. Wright banged a drum as she led the gathering of some 50 people through a powerful version of the song. Nanticoke Tribesman Charles Clark followed Wright with more song and a traditional war dance - one of Howard's favorite Native American rituals. The mourners then traveled up to Modest Town Baptist Church Cemetery, where Clark blessed Howard's final resting place and smoked a ceremonial pipe in honor of his friend. Adorned in beads and feathers, Clark ended the ceremony by placing a small feather fluff in a box holding Howard's ashes. "This will help Red Jacket on his journey," Clark said. An avid craftsman, who created everything from pottery and beadwork to dream catchers and oil paintings. Howard worked in many venues to promote the cause of American Indians. He was a familiar face at pow-wows up and down the Eastern Seaboard and a strong advocate for state and federal government recognition of Eastern Shore Native Americans. Appearing on numerous occasions before the state assemblies of Maryland and Virginia, Howard was active in the establishment of Maryland's Commission on Indian Affairs and in efforts to recognize Maryland's indigenous people. "Our hope is that his work will be continued." Norris Howard said, "both by his family and those who knew him."5 |

Marriage* | July 1959 | Victoria Augusta Bundick married Agustin B. Mejia in July 1959 at Washington, DC.3 |
Obituary - Mother's* | 10 February 1977 | Victoria was named in her mother's obituary on 10 February 1977. She was a psychiatric social worker in New York City..4 |
Anecdote* | | She has been twice married and is now divorced. She has no children. According to the S.S. App. & Claims Index, she had been married to a Collins and to a Hofler.1 |
Death* | 28 May 2005 | She died on 28 May 2005 at age 95. According to Bob Jones, Victoria, who was a graduate of the University of Maryland and of William & Mary College, married in D.C., in July 1959, Agustin B. Mejia, of Madrid, Spain. Victoria was employed as executive director of a social service agency in Washington, D.C. As far as I know, neither she nor her sister Clothilde produced offspring. Victoria apparently spent her retirement in Snow Hill, MD, based on the fact that in March 1961, she bought, from J. Milton and Monica Laws, the "Presbyterian Manse Property" on Snow Hill's Federal Street. One of the two daughters left a bequest to the Greenbackville Methodist Church (they had lived in Greenbackville for ten years . . . in fact, the girls were likely born there).5,3 |
Burial* | | Victoria was buried at Parksley Cemetery, Parksley, Accomack Co, VA.5 |
