Shepheard appealed to the next court, and it was ordered that he put up security, pay 50% of the damage in case he was condemned, and remain in the sheriff's custody. Col. Edm. Scarburgh then requested that Shepheard speak and justify himself at this time, for then present were several witnesses who knew much of Shepheard's dealings and of several testimonies printed in a libellous book. Scarburgh maintained that in this "public audience where most of the county were then present" Shepheard should name persons, times, places and circumstances. After many "impertinent speeches" Shepheard answered that it was at Pungotege, but didn't know when. Several dwellers of Pungotege, (Mr. Richard Hill, Mrs. Anne Toft, Anne Francis and Mr. Jno. Richard Ayres White Sr.1,2
M, b. 31 December 1795, d. 29 March 1869
Birth* | 31 December 1795 | Richard was born on 31 December 1795 at Accomack Co, VA. Since his tombstone shows 31 Dec 1795 or 1797, the earlier is assumed, since he was married in 1816 and this would make him age 21 (instead of age 19) when married..2 |
Census w/mother* | 1800 | Richard was listed with his mother in the census of in 1800 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was probably one of the 2 males, age 0-10 (bc 1790-1800) in the household headed by Sally White (Levin)..3 |

Cash was paid Richard White for his orphan claim due by the estate. (NOTE: Evidently William A. White and Richard White were Sarah's step-children by her previsous marriage to Levin White and when she married Waitman Willett in 1806, he became the guardian to Richard White who was still under age. According to the 1850 census Richard was born in 1796 and would have been 17 years old in 1813 when Waitman Willett died and had a claim against his estate. William A. White was evidently old enough to become the administrator of Waitman Willett's estate.)7 |
