Col. Solomon Ewell1

Father | James (of Edward) Ewell (brickmaker) b. c 1640, d. b 5 Jun 1704 | |
Mother | Anne (of Joshua) Smith b. c 1645 |
Birth* | circa 1671 | Solomon was born circa 1671 at Accomack Co, VA. |
Will - Father's* | 7 August 1703 | Solomon was named in his father's will on 7 August 1703 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son Solomon Ewell in the will of James Ewell, wife Anne. He received the 250 acres which James bought from John West..1,2 |
Marriage* | circa 1716 | He married Comfort (of Elias) Taylor, daughter of Elias (of Wm I) Taylor and Comfort Ann [42] Anderson, circa 1716. Comfort, daughter of Elias Taylor, inherited part of Whitelaw's tract A141 when her brother Joshua Taylor died without issue. This was the upper part and extended north of the road through Assawoman a short distance and it included A141A. After the death of Solomon Ewell, his widow Comfort married Charles Stockley and had issue, but Charles had only the life interest of his wife in the property, and in 1741 he gave a deed of release to Jedidiah Ewell, the ultimate heir of Solomon and Comfort..3 |
Land bought | 1724 | Solomon bought land in 1724 at Makemie Park, Acc Co, VA. It was in this year that Colonel Solomon Ewell bought 1,400 acres from John Kendall, Henry & Ann Custis and Samuel & Mason Kendall. The village of Makemie Park is slightly northeast of the center of the 1,400 acres. In the deed it was called Ewell's Forest, but later it became know as Pocomoke Swamp. In 1727 Solomon & Comfort Ewell sold 250 acres to Thomas Blair, who in 1740 sold to Edward Dickinson. In 1754 Edward Dickeson (wife Sarah) left all of his land to a son Jessie; as he did not specify the acreage, in cannot be said definitely that he then owned the Rabishaw land immediately to the west of it, but that is assumed. In 1788 Jesse Dickinson died intestate, leaving a wife Leah and 4 children. His land remained intact until 1803 when 540 acres were divided among Susannah, Betsey and Jesse Dickinson and William Ewell in right of his wife Sarah. In 1731 Solomon and Comfort Ewell sold 200 acres to William Sterling. In 1734 the Ewells sold 461 acres to William Mason, it being the bottom of the 1,400 acres. In 1741 Jedidiah Ewell and his stepfather Charles Stockley, united in a deed to Robert Baley for 100 acres and sold another 219 acres to Ralph Corbin and sold another 150 acres to George Booth, which completed the disposition of the 1,400 acres of Solomon Ewell land..4 |
Land bought* | 1725 | Solomon bought land in 1725 at Atlantic, Acc Co, VA. It was in this year that Samuel and Naomi Davis sold their interset to Solomon Ewell, who had married Comfort (sister of Naomi and they were daughters of Elias Taylor, who had married William Anderson's daughter Comfort), and in 1733 the Ewells and Elizabeth (Naomi & Comfort's sister) and William Whittington made a formal division of the whole, the Whittingtons getting the lower third. The seaside road goes through the tract and the present village of Atlantic is on this road. The Solomon Ewell part became divided into two parts, one of 400 acres, next to the Whittington land, and the other of 450 acres, next to Whitelaw's tract A173. In his will of 1734 Solomon Ewell left the latter, as the land he had purchased from Samuel and Naomi Davis, to his son William, but he made no disposition of the former, which had been Comfort's own inheritance from her grandfather William Anderson, and which would automatically pass to the eldest son Jedidiah Ewell..5 |
