This fits exactly with the will of his Aunt Margaret Taylor who named a nephew John Revell Gaskins Onley and left him all her property. She had been Margaret 'Peggy' Gaskins, before her second marriage to Revel Taylor. Her first marriage was to Revell Gaskins. |

When Mr. Joe Smith of Saxis died suddenly at Newport News on 14 Oct 1923, his obituary said he was formerly of Savageville. A search of the 1860 census shows Wm. Smith, age 19 was living with his parents Geo. W. & Eliz'th Smith in Pungoteauge and Nicetta S. Nelson, age 18, was living with her parents Edmund Leatherbury & Sally Nelson in Savageville. Of all the William Smiths found in the 1860 Accomack Co census, this seems to be the best match. No marriage record has been found for William T. Smith and Nicetta S. Nelson..7 |

John Aaron Linton1
M, b. circa 1861, d. 30 June 1935
Birth* | circa 1861 | John was born circa 1861 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA.2 |
Biography* | 1862 | John Aaron Linton's birth year is uncertain. Since he was not listed with his parents in the 1860 Census, he must have been born after that time. He is not in the household with his mother Nancy, sister Jane (14) and brother George (17) in 1870. He does appear with his mother Nancy, 49 and widowed, in 1880 when he is shown as 22 and single. In 1900, with his wife Melissa and family, his birth is shown as Jan 1860. In 1910, with his wife Melissa and family, he is 45 (b.c. 1865). In 1920, he is again with his wife Melissa and family, age 49 (b.c. 1871). Based on not being in his parents household in 1860 and being 22 in 1880, it is assumed he was born shortly after the 1860 Census (b.c. 1861). It is unclear where he was in the 1870 Census. Mr. John A. Linton died at Saxis on 30 Jun 1935 (age not listed). Funeral services were conducted by Rev. McKeawn and Walls at the Saxis Methodist Church with burial in the Justice Cemetery, Saxis. Survivors included his wife, 1 daughter, 4 sons, all of who were listed, and 13 grandchildren who were not listed (E.S. News, 5 Jul 1935). |

He was shown as Aaron Linton, a 21 year old oysterman, the son of George & Nancy Linton and she was shown Melissa Thomas, age 15, the daughter of Alonzo & Martha Thomas. They were married at Sykes Isld by R.B. Beadles..2 |
Census head* | 1900 | John was listed as a head of household in the census of 1900 at Saxis Island, Accomack Co, VA. HH#482 was headed by John Linton, a 40 year old oysterman, born Jan 1860. Linton, a 17 year old son, born Jan 1883; Frank Linton, a 12 year old son, born Dec 1887; Alonzo Linton, a 7 year old son, born Dec 1887; Harvey Linton, a 5 year old son, born Nov 1894; Dewey Linton, a 2 year old son, born May 1898; Jane Thomas, a 51 year old widowed mother-in-law, born Jul 1849; and Clarra Thomas, an 18 year old sister-in-law, born Apr 1882.3 |
