He has been a true type of the old-time religious character. He had always been a faithful church-attender, until within a few months of his death. He was 83 years of age and was very active until a few months ago. He has made a home with his daughter, Mrs. James Stevenson, for the past 7 years, it being the old Marshall homestead. Many years ago he was a great captain and was known and beloved by all the bay sailors of that day. His funeral was held at Union M. E. Church last Friday, Rev. Derrickson conducting the services. Mr. John Bradshaw of Crisfield had charge of the funeral. He leaves two sons, Capt. Cooper Marshall, of this place; Mr. Will W. Marshall of Virginia and five daughters, Mrs. James Stevenson, Mrs. E. T. Marsh, Mrs. J. L. Bradshaw, Mrs. Nellie Bradshaw, Mrs. Jane Evans of Ewell, also seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren to mourn his loss. Mrs. Flora Stevenson, of this city, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maurice Pruitt, in Baltimore on Sunday last and her death came as a distinct shock to Crisfield residents who were not aware of her serious illness. Mrs. Stevenson, the widow of the late Professor James E. Stevenson, Jr., well-known and popular musician, was fifty-eight years of age and was the daughter of the late John W. Marshall and Julia Ann Tyler Marshall, of Smith's Island. She possessed a most beautiful character and was one of Crisfield's finest and most esteemed citizens. Her wonderful traits were numerous. She was of the sweet and noble type whom to know was to love. She loved her home, her family and her community and her place in the hearts of those who loved her can never be filled. Her sweet disposition and her willingness to help anyone and everyone possible, made for her a host of warm friends whose hearts go out to the relatives of this fine woman in their hour of bereavement. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Sterling of this city and Mrs. Mary Pruitt, of Baltimore, and one granddaughter, Polly, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Sterling. Five sisters, Mrs. Jane Evans, of Ewell, Mrs. Julia Marsh, Mrs. Olevia Bradshaw, Mrs. Nellie Bradshaw, all of Tylerton, and Mrs. Nettie Barnes, of Onancock, Va., also survive. Funeral services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Sterling on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. J. R. Bicking, pastor of the Immanuel M. E. Church, officiated at the final rites. Interment was beside the body of her husband in the family plot of the Crisfield cemetery. The Crisfield Times, Crisfield, Maryland, Friday, March 10, 1939, p. 1.1 |
