To my wife my 2 Negro slaves Moses & Patience & $400 & … To my son William Thomas Lewis the land on which I now live containing 100 acres bounded on the northwest by Doe Creek, on the northeast by Major Rayfield's land, on the southeast by Thomas Johnson's lands & also to my son the land I bought of John Bayly containing 50 acres bounded on the south by the lands of Thomas Lewis Jr., on the east by "Hills Farm" & on the northeast by lands of James Lewis (of H.) & also to my son my piece of swamp land containing 30 acres bounded southwest by lands of Dennis Rew, on the southeast by lands of Littleton Ayres & on the northeast by lands of the heirs of Edmund Custis. He was born on March 23, 1917 in Mears, the son of Thomas Lee and Finney Chase Byrd. Carlton was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy and Washington and Lee University, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. In 1946 he married Clare G. Harrington in Newport, R.I. At the outbreak of WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended the University of Chicago for training. He volunteered for service in the new, untried Motor Torpedo (known as P.T. or Patrol Torpedo) squadrons. Carlton received additional training in Melville, R.I. at the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons Training Center on Narragansett Bay. He served two tours of duty in New Guinea. During his second tour, he transported General Douglass McArthur on P.T. 114, which he commanded. After the war, Carlton returned to the Eastern Shore and in 1956 started what is now known as Byrd Foods, Inc. He served as the company's President until his death. In addition, he was a charter member of the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club and was a member of the Onancock Lions Club. Other than his wife of 59 years, he is survived by three daughters, Clare Carter and husband George, Jane Paxton and husband Robert, all of Charlottesville, and Elizabeth Fitch and husband Wray of McLean; a brother, Wilson Byrd of Mears; brother-in-law, John P. Harrington of Houston; several nieces and nephews; and his nine beloved grandchildren, Clare, Cullen and George Carter, Avery, Robert and Clare Paxton, and Wray, Carlton and Francesca Fitch. Graveside services will be held at the family residence, Oakwood Farm, Onancock today, April 19, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Harry Crandall will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Eastern Shore, P.O. Box 316, Parksley, VA 23421, the Onancock Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Lee Byrd and Sons which was founded by his father. His operation involved the growing, packing and shipping of potatoes. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he was a deacon for many years, and served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was aboard the USS Hutchins Destroyer in the Pacific Theatre, having been on the ship watching the raising of the flag in Iwo Jima. Mr. Byrd was a charter member of the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club and a member of the V.F.W., Moose and Elks Clubs. Other than his loving wife of sixty-three years, survivors include four children, Lynda Byrd Jones Ward and husband Ben of Hebron, MD, Thomas Lee Byrd, II and wife Dawn of Onancock, VA, Wilson Chase Byrd, Jr. and wife Kathryn of Mears, VA, and Henry Robert “Robby” Byrd of Onley, VA; five grandchildren, Jennifer Jones O’Neill, Kellilyn Jones, T. Lee Byrd, III, Elizabeth Morgan Byrd and Michael Chase Byrd; two great-grandchildren, Claire O’Neill and Nathan O’Neill, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Carlton Lee Byrd and Thomas Milton Byrd. Funeral services will be conducted from the Bethel Baptist Church in Mears on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 3:00 PM with the Reverend Mark Layne officiating. Interment will follow in the Wessells Cemetery in Mears. There will be a visitation at the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Saturday, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
