Mrs. Tulie Marshall (-----)
F, b. circa 1860, d. 12 March 1925
Last Edited | 10 May 1997 |
Was Living | Mrs. was living at Belinda, Acc Co, VA.1
Biography* | Quite a number of people of our town (Belinda) attended the funeral of Mrs. Tulie Marshall last Thursday at Pocomoke Church. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved family, especially to the aged husband and the children (E.S. News, 20 Mar 1925). The best guess as to who this might be would be Debracy Marshall's wife, Matilda J. Marshall, but she died in 1927 according to her tombstone and will. However, there is a Matilda Marshall who was a member of the Pocomoke Methodist Church from 1898 to 1917, who, according to church records, died in 1925. However, it was assumed that she was Debracy's wife with the wrong death date in the church records.

Letter sent* | 5 September 1935 | Annie Susan Byrd sent a letter on 5 September 1935 at Mappsville, Accomack Co, VA. Mappsville, Virginia September 5th, 1935 To: Salisbury Predestinarian Baptist Association In care, W.J. Holloway, Clerk Salisbury, Maryland Dear Brethren and Sisters: I am attempting to express my humble interpretation and mind of the records and Elders of "The Old School Baptist" at Messongo Meeting House. The records are not as complete as was thought, but they do enable me to express a portion of my appreciation and gratefulness of being a member of the named place, all of which I am thankful to my "Maker" for. It comes from 1779 to 1839 scarcely any records are available, but all indications are to the effect that the first meeting house in Accomac County of the Primitive Faith was erected during the year of 1779 on what is known as the "Bay-Side Route" near "Messongo Bridge" or about two and one half miles from Hallwood. The land being given by my Great-Grand Father Jacob Northam, who lived and died of our faith. His granddaughter, Mrs. Susan Fisher Byrd, following his foot-steps was a member of this faith for fifty five years, the mother of four children, namely: Johannas, William, Margaret and myself. Some of whom have passed on, who also lived and died of our faith. To go further without saying something as to one of our faithful workers in our FAITH would seem just out of reason, he was Ebriam Byrd, (no blood connection of mine) not only did he take active part in the Faith but took a great interest in the building of the meeting-house, he was a mechanic by instinct as well as by trade, he planned the burning of the shells for the lime and made all of the frame work with an adz. It must not be overlooked that his daughter Arena, although not of our faith, stood firm with him, helping to sift the shell lime and sand that walls of the building held. (Page No. 2) The first pastor, according to the available records, was Elder Thomas Walters, while it is not shown as to where or what community he came from, however he was pastor for a period of seventeen years, the dates being from 1838 to 1856, in which time he baptized two who late was called as our pastor. A second pastor was Elder Crippen Delastatious, for a period of six years, the dates as shown were 1856 to 1868, but no record is shown as to his origin etc. The Third was Julius Mears, born at Muddy Creek, Accomac County, baptized by Elder Walters during the year of 1851 and received the follow-ship of faith. During the early part of 1863 he was called to our ministry and died the later part of the same year. As is shown, was only pastor a short time, approximately one year. A fourth was Elder Thomas M. Poulson, born at Muddy Creek, Accomac County, January 14th 1831 and died December 1st 1913. At the age of twenty one was baptized by Elder Walter (This was to be exact in March of 1852) and received the fellowship of the "Old School Baptist faith, during the year of 1864 he was called to our ministry, preaching his first sermon in the old meeting house, and his last in the new and present building over or very near the identical spot as that of his first, and his remains now lay within fifty feet of the meeting house door from the back which opens to the pulpit, where he has been heard to say on numerous occasions say was the "DEAREST SPOT ON EARTH TO ME". It is shown that he was a member of Messongo Meeting House for 61 years, also pastor for 49 years. He married a daughter of Ebrian Byrd, and a sister to the Arena, who so faithfully toiled in the building of the MEETING HOUSE. His wife Ellen E. was a member of our faith and worshipped with him. The four churches that he so faithfully served, had erected a monument as a token of their appreciation. (Page No. 3) During the years of 1914, 1915 and until October the 24th, Elders Francis, Alexander and Mellott supplied when ever it was possible to do so, but the 24th of October Elder J.C. Mellott, of Salisbury accepted our call and remained our pastor until his death which was the latter part of 1925, a period of approximately nine years, as the pulpit was filled in 1916. Elder G.E. Coulbourn has filled the pulpit when ever possible, declaring the doctrine according to our faith. During a portion of this time there were five members, remaining the same number until 1932(?). These members at the time were four sisters and one brother: Mrs Margarett H. Somers, Mrs. Margarett E. Byrd, Mrs. Tabitha Hall, Mrs. Annie S. Kelley and Mr. James "Jimmy" Hall. All of which have passed away except myself and I am now at the age of seventy-five. Mrs. Margarett E. Byrd, a sister in flesh and spiritual sister died December 7th 1934 and Mrs. Tabitha Hall, a cousin and a sister in spirit died in February 1935, both since our last association. Now that I have quoted as best possible some facts as history of the Meeting House and Elders, I desire to quote some facts that I am aware of, also to express my wishes as to the present site etc. In 1906 it was fully realized that the "Old Meeting House" was not mechanically fit for repairs, also that a new building must be had. The foundation was laid the last week in July and was completed the second week in October of the same year. John William Byrd was the master-carpenter. The third Sunday in October of the same year, the dedication sermon was preached by Elder T.M. Poulson, he using the same text as that was read by him before entering the pulpit, it being "Unto us is born a child, Unto us a child is given" and the fourth week of the same month and year the Salisbury Association was held in this building. (Page No. 4) The building was fully paid for, coasting an amount of eleven hundred seventeen dollars ($1117.00) and at that time a balance of $4.15 was in-hand. The Salisbury Association made a liberal contribution, but I am not in knowledge of what the amount was. Since that land was given by Jacob Northam, there has been two parcels of adjoining land bought, namely: one parcel on the east and directly in back of the present meeting house, another on the south of the building. The first parcel was bought for the purpose of being used as burial space. The second parcel was purchased for the purpose of placing the old meeting house on, which was done. Members of our faith who are laid to rest in the yard are as follows: at the Northwest corner and near the road are the graves of Kitty Northam and John W. Mears; in the Northeast corner are Sophie White and Margarette Northam Byrd; directly in back of the building are the graves of Elder T.M. Poulson and his wife Ellen E; following the eastern boundary line are the graves of George W. Kelley and his wife Elizabeth D., also Drucilla Northam, Johanas F. Byrd and his wife Mary M. The remaining graves are parties who were strict sympathizers of our faith, relatives or very dear friends of members. This spot has held to be the one doctrine for a period of one hundred fifty six years, yet the records are not complete, due to small membership and that they being scattered so far apart, it was impossible for the clerk to always present, yet the records or minutes and the place has afforded many pleasures for me, and if it be the LORDS will, I hope that it will be maintained and will have a membership. Now that the Salisbury Association contributed to the building now on the present site and that I am the only living member, also that I am now at the age of seventy five, I feel that the Association should know all the facts and be in a position to take over and do what they may deem best, when I am taken away from this world. It is my desire and wish that the building (Page No. 5) be kept in repair during the balance of my stay on earth. A donation was made some years ago by a sister namely: Ann Byrd, the amount being one hundred dollars ($100) whose administrator at her death was S.A. Godwin, the money to be placed on interest, and the income there from of $6 to be paid to the pastor. The principal was paid over to W.S. Byrd and from W.S. Byrd to J.F. Byrd and from the later to James "Jimmy" hall, all being church clerks. At the death of Brother Hall, Roy D. White was either named in his will as administrator or that he was selected by members of his family to handle the affairs of his estate and at that time all papers were given to him. I do not know what amount is in the attorney's hands, but if there be and amount left, it could be applied to the wrecking of the old meeting house, which will soon fall from decay, and also could be used in the preserving of the new building. If the present location should go down, it is my wish and hope that if the Blessed Lord in his wisdom may see fit, that he will cause to be erected another building on the spot and of the same faith. It is my intention to attend the Association that is to be held in October of this year, but knowing what the future has in store, I am mailing the letter to you, and whether I am there are not, I would like for Elder Coulbourne (if it meets with his approval and that he is well in health) to read the same before the body attending the Association. It is my desire that when I am taken away, that the clerk of the Association obtain the records of the meetings held of the OLD SCHOOL BAPTIST FAITH of MESSONGO, and there upon record my name with those who have passed on before. Yours in the Primitive Faith Annie S. Kelley.6 |
