Birth* | 19 May 1722 | Joseph was born on 19 May 1722 at Somerset Co, MD.2,3 |
Bound Out* | March 1733 | He was bound out in March 1733 at Somerset Co, MD. At the March Court of 1733 Joseph Crockett, son of Sampson Crockett dec'd, of his own free consent was bound by the court to Thomas Tylar until age 21, being 12 years of age the 19th day of May last; Thomas Tyler was to teach him to read, write and cypher to the rule of three and the trade of a weaver. Joseph Crockett appears in the household of Thomas Tyler from 1738-1744.3 |
Will - GrFath's* | 30 March 1733 | Joseph was named in his grandfather's will on 30 March 1733 at Somerset Co, MD. In his will John Tyler, carpenter, gave to grandsons Tyler Crockett and Joseph Crockett and son Thomas Tyler beds and furniture and the rest of my immovables to be equally divided among them. To son Thomas Tyler all my whole plantation with all the land belongs to it and marsh. To sons Abden Tyler, Richard Tyler, John Tyler and daughter Else he left 12 pence each. He named his son Thomas Tyler and Arthur Parks as Extrs. Witt: John Evins, Charles Davis and John Hurst.4 |
Marriage* | circa 1748 | He married Ann Evans circa 1748. Rebecca Furniss Miller shows that Joseph Crockett married an Ann Evans and Gail Walczyk shows that he married a Sally Tyler..5,3 |
Will - Named as heir* | 4 April 1765 | Joseph was named as a heir in a will on 4 April 1765 at South Point, Tangier Island, Accomack Co, VA. Joseph Crockett was the executor of John Fish's will, written 4 Apr 1765 and probated 30 Apr 1766 in Acc Co, VA. John Fish gave all of South Point, the whole patent belonging to me, to Joseph Crockett. He also gave Spencer Tyler all his part of Hog Neck. He also named Lazarus Bacor, Jocob Tylor and David Taylor. Witnesses were Butler Tylor, Arthur Parkes, and Sarah Tylor (Acc Co Wills, 1761-1767, p. 608). There is a tombstone on Tangier Island which reads only "Crockett," with no given name, "1725-1802." This could possibly be the tombstone of Joseph Crockett who died in 1806, if the 1802 is faded.6 |
Land bought* | 1778 | He bought land in 1778 at tract A85, Tangier Island, Accomack Co, VA. William Andrews (wife Anna Maria) sold this tract as 450 acres to Joseph Crockett. According to Whitelaw, it has been said that the island was first settled in 1686 by a John Crockett and his eight sons, who had come over from the Western Shore, but that does not seem to be substantiated by the records. The Crockett family is known to have been on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland at an early date. If they had possibly come to the island at the date indicated, they would have come as cattle-tenders or other tenants of the Scarburgh-West owners. There is no record of a Crockett owning land in Accomack County before this 1778 purchase, and not a Crockett will is recorded there, down to 1800.7 |
Census* | 1800 | He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1800 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA.8 |

To daughters Sally Linton, Leah Hopkins, Rachel Parker & Molly Evans $20 each. To son Zachariah & daughter Tabitha the remainder & if she should marry her part of the removable estate & money to her sisters. To daughter Tabitha a right to keep what stock she thinks proper on both my islands. Sons Thomas & Zachariah Extrs. Witt: Charles Snead, Sarah Snead & Sally Snead..9 |
