Death* | 21 May 2015 | He died on 21 May 2015 at Newport News, VA, at age 88. Elton W. Bennett, 88, passed away on May 21st, 2015. He was the son of Hayward and Mary Lola Kellam Bennett. Born May 3, 1927, in Norfolk, VA, he graduated from Newport News High School in 1947 after having served in the United States Navy in 1945. He graduated from Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School and had a fifty year career with Newport News Shipbuilding. Career highlights included being a vital part of the emergent Naval Nuclear Propulsion program and construction of the A1W prototype (for Enterprise aircraft carrier) at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. He loved traveling in the great northwest and enjoyed art, tennis, gardening and woodworking. He was an active member of Gideons International, sharing his testimony to many, and was a member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Barbara Eades Bennett, and three brothers, Hayward, Jr., Edward and Pete Bennett. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 44 years, Carol H. Bennett; sons Thomas (Cindy), Dale (Trinh), John, Rodney and Rodger Bennett, and daughter, Ann (Andrew) Yost; grandchildren Arin, Beau, David, Ann, and Bransel Bennett, Alexis (Tim) Rist, and Andrew Yost; and four great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 PM, Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church, Newport News, with a reception to follow. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 6373, Newport News VA 23606. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. |

Young, 86, of Metompkin Road, Parksley, VA, husband of the late Rhoda Dalby Young, passed away Friday, August 29, 2014 at Riverside–Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, VA. Born on March 28, 1928 in Northampton County, he was the son of the late Harvey Young and the late Thelma Smith Young. Ralph was the retired owner of the former Young’s Meat Barn and a retired farmer. He was a member of the Zion Baptist Church where he had served as deacon for many years, a Past Master of the former Parksley Masonic Lodge #325, and was a former board member of the Francis Makemie Society. Ralph is survived by his daughter, Connie Y. Webster and her husband, John, of Prince George, VA, a son, Franklin D. Young and his wife, Lois Anne, of Parksley, VA; his sisters, Ruby Swain and her husband, Hughes, of Nelson County, VA, and Barbara Middleton and her husband, Bob, of Arizona; a brother, Donald Young and his wife, Lou Floyd, of Parksley, VA; two grandchildren, Christy W. Baker and her husband, Tim, and Jo Young DeBusk and her husband, Mac; four great-grand children, Emma Grace Baker, Josh Baker, Ava Marie Baker, and Jasper Joy DeBusk; a sister-in-law, Hilda Mae Mears, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Baptist Church, 26381 Lankford Hwy., Parksley, VA. The Rev. Andrew Matthews and the Rev. John Cullop will officiate. Interment followed in the Parksley Cemetery.1 |

Rhoda Dalby Young, 85, wife of Ralph Young, of Parksley, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at her home in Parksley. Born on May 12, 1927, in Kingston, MD, she was the daughter of the late Handy and Hilda Broughten Dalby. During her early years, she was raised at her family’s namesake community of Dalby in Northampton County. Rhoda’s greatest joy was teaching and witnessing for the Lord. She was a graduate of the Pocomoke Bible Institute, taught Sunday school at Zion Baptist Church for over 40 years and was very active in missions and the Christian Woman’s Club. She also served as the Evangelism chairman for the Accomack Baptist Association and was a Bible coordinator of Friendship Bible Classes for Stonecroft Ministries. Rhoda was also a member of the Colonial Dames of the Eastern Shore Chapter. Rhoda is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Ralph F. Young; her son, Franklin D. Young and his wife, Lois Anne of Parksley, VA; her daughter, Connie Y. Webster and her husband, John of Prince George, VA; grand-daughter, Christy W. Baker and her husband, Tim; grand-daughter, Jo Young DeBusk and husband, Mac of Glade Springs, VA; two great-grandchildren, Emma Grace and Josh Baker; a sister, Hilda Mae Mears of Raleigh, NC and her many Christian brothers and sisters. She was predeceased by sisters, Marion Powell of Newark, DE and Barbara Lewis of Milledgeville, GA and a step-grandson, John Webster, Jr. A celebration of her life will be conducted by Rev. John Cullop on Friday, April 26th at 2:00 PM at Zion Baptist Church, with interment following at the Parksley Cemetery. |
