Marriage* | 4 September 1729 | He married Hannah Noble, daughter of Jonathan Noble I and Mary (-----), on 4 September 1729 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co, MD.5 |
Anecdote* | | David Dryden Jr. was listed as a carpenter in 1730. However, most of his life was devoted to farming, for only a few years later, he was referred to as planter. His father-in-law Jonathan Noble, who died in 1721, left his lands equally to his two sons, William and Jonathan Noble. Both sons died in their minority without children and their lands thereby passed to their there sisters, Rebecca Noble (who married John Lewis), Hannah Noble (who married David Dryden) and Elizabeth Noble. John Lewis and his wife, accompanied by Elizabeth Noble, moved to Sussex Co, DE, where they settled in Lewes and Rehobeth Hundred. John Lewis died there in 1786/7, leaving sons Noble and William Lewis. On 28 May 1736, John Lewis and his wife Rebecca and Elizabeth Noble joined in selling to David and Hannah Dryden their right to 100 acres of Hackela, 23 acres of Cherry Garden and 37 1/2 acres of Timber Grove. The first two tracts consisted of plantation land while Timber Grove contained swamp and marsh land along the Pocomoke River, the whole property lying not far from present-day Pocomoke City. On the same day, the Drydens joined with the Lewises and Elizabeth Noble in deeding to John Paden the remainder of the Jonathan Noble land, consisting of 80 acres of Hackela, 63 acres of Cherry Garden and 37 1/2 acres of Timber Grove. The lands were laid out in two tracts, with the Drydens on the west and the Padens on the east. They were evidently divided informally by 1734 or earlier. As time passed the bounder between the Drydens and Padens deteriorated and in March 1759 David petitioned the court to appoint a commission to re-establish the bounders. A commission was appointed but, David Dryden and John Paden could not agree on the bounders. On 15 Apr 1759 David Dryden filed a petition stating that his part of Hackela consisted of only 103 3/4 acres, there being a deficiency of 25 acres, but that there were 20 acres of vacant land available. He received a warrent to resurvey his tract which he designated as Addition to Hackela, 123 3/4 acres. He died, however, before he received a patent and the patent was granted to his eldest son, Jonathan Dryden, in 1767.4 |
Tax list | 1733 | David Dryden was on the tax list in 1733 at Pocomoke Hundred, Somerset Co, MD. He was head of his own household.4 |
Anecdote* | 28 August 1745 | With other members of the church, David signed a petition to the Governor and Upper and Lower Houses of Assembly, received 28 Aug 1745, protesting the request of part of the parish for permission to build a chapel of ease, pointing out that they already had a parish church, a chapel of ease and a temporary place of worship; they feared the additional assessment would become burdensome.6 |
Death* | before 24 March 1761 | David died before 24 March 1761 at Somerset Co, MD. It was on this date that administration on the estate of David Dryden was granted to his widow Hannah with her son Jonathan Dryden and Michael Cluff securities..5 |

William Dryden (Dredden) (tailor)1
M, b. between 1635 and 1640, d. before 8 March 1686/87
Birth* | between 1635 and 1640 | William was born between 1635 and 1640 at Edmonston, Newton Parish, Scotland.2,3 |
Marriage* | circa 1660 | He married Agnes (-----) circa 1660 at Scotland.4 |
Biography* | 1665 | William Dryden (Dredden) was a tailor in Edmondston, which perhaps in his day contained somewhat more than the three or four cottages it is said to contain today. His wife was named Agnes but her maiden name is unknown. His children appear to have born during the 1660's and 1670's. Hence, we would estimate that William himself was born about 1635/40 and married about 1660. Perhaps he was the William Dredden who, as we have seen above, was born on 28 Mar 1638 in Inversk Parish. This William was born in Mussilburgh, but Mussilburgh was only about 3 1/2 miles away from Edmonston. A tailor might be expected to move from one place to another to some extent even in those days when travel was limited. However, there seems to be no way that we can be certain that he was the same William. William's children were not registered in the parish records, which is not surprising since it seems likely that he was a Presbyterian Covenanter. During the early part of the 17th century, sporadic attempts were made to suppress the Covenanters until in 1661, they were formally outlawed, and the Anglican Church declared the Church of Scotland. During the 1680's, the persecution increased, with English troops pillaging farmhouses, exacting free quarters and seizing and imprisoning those who were refractory. Many of the Covenanters were shot down and torture was common. Finally, in 1685, the death penalty was decreed for those attending a conventicle, a secret meeting of the Presbyterians for worship. This law was in force until 1687 when it was revoked. Then in 1689, with the assumption of William and Mary to the British throne, the act establishing the Presbyterian Church as the Church of Scotland was passed. On 29 Sept 1682, William Dredan and Agnes Dredan were arrested and imprisoned in the Old Tolbooth Prison in Edinburgh, where many religious prisoners were incarcerated. Imprisoned with them were James Robertson, William Lawson, Marion Wood, Isable Rae, Margaret Pringle, Christian Porteus, Janet Crawford and Christian Davidson. Marion 'Marie' Wood was described as a widow with five young children, one still nursing. Isable Rae was a colbearer (dispenser of religious tracts?) in the town of Wolment. All these prisoners were said to be "guilty of a tumultuous convocation and riot committed at Wolmet upon ye 14 of September instant in opposition to his Majesty's authority." As punishment, they were sentenced to imprisonment lasting from several days to a week. William Dredan and Isabel Rae were the leaders of the group and, as such, received a public whipping in addition. The nature of the convocation and riot was not further described, but it can hardly be doubted that it was part of the religious disturbances of the day. One of the many reasons that lead the early colonists to forsake their ancestral lands in the Old World and see a new home in America, perhaps the most decisive and certainly the noblest was the desire to worship God in the manner they might choose without fear of persecution. To such as these, Somerset County on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland stood forth as a beacon of hope, for the highest degree of toleration of the day could be found in that area. Here members of all Christian sects, whether members of the Church of England, Presbyterians, Quakers, perhaps even an occasional Roman Catholic, dwelled side by side in friendly peace and harmony. Many Scotsmen sought refuge in the New World. Thus we have the following picture as seen through the eyes of an unfriendly critic, Edward Randolph, of James City, VA, writing to the Commissioners of Customs, 27 June 1692, "I hear (the new governor of Maryland) has continued Majr. King to bee ye Naval Officer in Somerset County on ye eastern shore, a place pestered with Scotch and Irish. About two hundred families have within ye two years arrived from Ireland and settled in ye county besides some hundred of family's there before. They have set up a linen Manufacture, Encouraged thereto by Coll. Brown, a Scotchman, one of ye Council and Majr. King and other principal persons upon ye place, who support ye Interlopers and buy up all their Loading upon their first arrival and govern ye whole trade on ye Eastern Shore, so yt. whereas 7 or 8 ships from England did yearly trade and load ye Tobacco of yt. Coty. I find yt. in these thee years past there have not been five ships trading legally in all these Rivers, and nigh 30 Sayle of Scotch Irish and New England men. Some year before Randolph penned these somewhat jaundiced comments, William Dryden and his family had left Scotland for America. The exact date of their migration is not known but by 27 May 1685, they were living in Somerset County, MD. On that day, William and Agnes Dryden, signing as William Dredden and Agnes Dredden, witnessed the will of Randall Revell Sr, one of the prominent citizens of the county. Thus by the time that the so-called "Killing Time" in Scotland reached its height, William and his family were safe in Maryland. It must be remembered that the Drydens were townspeople in the Old Country and not farmers. Thus they chose to settle at firs in a part of the county which had been colonized some 23 years prior to their arrival. Their association with Revell leads to the belief that they made their home in the Manokin River section where Revell lived. Somerset Town had been established on a part of Revell's land as a port of entry for the county in 1668. This town long since vanished was located at Deep Point (believed to be the present Clifton Point) on the south side of the Manokin River. It is here that William Dryden no doubt continued as a tailor. Unfortunately, the early records of the Dryden family are fragmentary and it is with difficulty that we piece together a connected picture. While there were a number of connections between Randall Revell and the early Drydens, these contacts appear to have been only of business or neighborly nature and there is no indication of a relationship between the two families. Revell, born about 1613, appeared in Accomac County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia about Jan/Feb 1633/34, whence he removed to the Manokin area of Somerset County in 1661/62 where he took up a large tract of and held high county offices. A cooper by trade, he amassed a large and comfortable estate prior to his death in 1686/87.1 |
Relocated* | before 27 May 1685 | William Dryden (Dredden) (tailor) relocated before 27 May 1685 to Somerset Co, MD..5 |
Will - Witnessed* | 27 May 1685 | William witnessed a will on 27 May 1685 at Somerset Co, MD. It was on this date that William Warwick, William Dredelen, Agnes Dredelen and John West witnessed the will of Randall Revell. This was their only appearance in Somerset County records.6 |
Death* | before 8 March 1686/87 | William died before 8 March 1686/87 at Somerset Co, MD. William and Agnes Dryden witnessed the will of Randall Revell on 27 May 1685. However, they failed to appear for probate on 8 Mar 1686/7. Since there were two other witnesses, their appearance was not necessary. However, no further record of them has been found and it seems likely that the rigors of the new frontier were too much for them and that they had passed away by that time..4 |
