Biography* | | Mr. James E. Killmon, aged 76 years, died on Monday, 15 Apr 1946, 11:45 am, at his home in Hacks Neck. Death was due to apoplexy and while he was well advanced in years, his sudden passing came as a severe shock to his family and friends. Mr. Killmon was born near Onancock, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Thomas H. Parker (this was an error, as these were the parents of his wife, Lula F. Parker) who moved to Rose Hill Farm, near Harborton, where Mr. Killmon was reared. Funeral services were held at Evergreen Church, of which he had been a trustee for many years. Interment was in Hollies Cemetery. The pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were listed, as well as survivors (E.S. News, 24 Apr 1946). |

Biography* | 1868 | Capt. John R. Sparrow came to Hacks Neck in 1868, after he had purchased from Rich. P. Read a farm on Butcher Creek, included in which are the present "J. Thomas" and "John W. Bonniwell" farms. Shortly afterwards the end of the 19th century he sold the remainder to William T. Mason. Capt. John R. Sparrow came to the Eastern Shore (Pungoteague District) much earlier from Smith's Island, MD, though he probably was born in Gloucester County, VA. He spend much of his time as master (and owner) of sailing vessels, operating dredging vessels or buying oysters from dredgers on the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay and taking them to Baltimore and elsewhere for sale, and during the summer in freighting produce, chiefly white and sweet potatoes, from Pungoteague and Nandua Creeks to Baltimore and Norfolk. Among the vessels he owned at different times were the "Noble Grand," a pungy, and the "Four Sisters," a schooner. After selling his farm in Hacks Neck he moved to the village of Harborton and erected a residence. He is remembered for his piety, an even disposition and his sprituality. He was an active Methodist.3 |
