Mr. Thomas Morgan, one of Crisfield's oldest and most highly respected citizens, succumbed to a heart attack at his home on Mariners Road, Wednesday afternoon. He had finished his noon-day meal and was resting in his favorite chair when the end came. He had passed his 90th birthday. Mr. Morgan was of Dutch-English descent. His father came from England to this country and married Harriet Darby of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and settled at Shelltown where the young Thomas Morgan was born. When a young man he met at Irvington, Va. and married Anna Belle Jefferson, great niece of President Thomas Jefferson. The couple lived at Shelltown until 1905 when they moved to Crisfield. He retired as a waterman 20 years ago. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church. Funeral services were held from the Bradshaw Funeral Parlors on Friday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Chas. M. Elderdice and Rev. Melvin E. Wheatley. Interment was in Asbury Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandchildren. He is survived by seven children, Mrs. Lucy Fleetwood of California, Mrs. Lessie Sterling and Mrs. Inez Somers of Crisfield, Wilbur, Barney and Gordon Morgan of Crisfield and Robert Morgan of Leesburg, N.J. and one brother, William Morgan of Crisfield. Morgan, beloved husband of Mrs. Mary Parks Morgan, passed away quietly at his home in Calvary Thursday morning, Feb. 6th. He was in his 86th year. Mr. Morgan had been ill for over two years and confined to his bed and his death was not unexpected. Born September 8, 1861 he was the last surviving son of the late Thomas and Harriet Darby Morgan, both of Somerset County. Mr. Morgan lived in the Calvary section for over 75 years. He was a member of Asbury Church and while health permitted, was active in religious work of that church. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, February 9th at 2 o'clock from Asbury Church, conducted by Rev. J.T. Rowlenson, pastor. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery. Tentative pallbearers are listed as Messrs. Jim Mosher, Ernest Sterling, Jim Sterling, Ralph Parks, Billy Nelson and Allen Parks. Besides his widow he is survived by four sons, Clifton and Warren Morgan, of Baltimore and Elmer and Maurice Morgan, Crisfield; one son, William Jr. having preceded him in death. Anecdote* | 4 November 1940 | On 4 Nov 1940 Mrs. Z.S. Mears (Nee Fannie Hazel ---) of Card Towing Lines Inc., 17 Batery Place, New York City, NY, wrote to the Supt' Home for Children, Holt Street, Norfolk, VA and asked for information trying to find out who her parents were. She stated that Vassie Bright, who was an inmate at the same time she was, being a little older then her, had told her the following: She was Fannie Hazel Rhodes, and was taken from the home by Frank Ailworth and his wife Nettie J. Ailworth of New Church, VA and they promised to adopt her, but didn't. Her then husband was a Captain on a Coastwise Barge and she was in the service and went with him at all times. But now the Government required Birth Certificates to prove they were American Citizens and she had none as was hoping to find information on who her parents were so that she could get a birth certificate. The on 13 Nov 1940 the Edgewater Home for Girls operated by the Female Orphan Society at 5505 Powhatan Avenue, Norfolk, VA replied to Mrs. Z.S. Mears that the only record that they had was that she entered The Orphanage in Sept 1900 and that the Holt Street Orphanage was sold in 1918 and they had been at 5505 Powhatan Ave since that time.2 |
