Fitchett by Jno. Fitchett his next friend (guardian), Shady Fitchett (daughter of Daniel) by Jona. Fitchett her next friend (guardian) & Clara Trower Davis. Salathiel Fitchett Senr formerly of this county, but now sometime dec'd, being in his lifetime, besides other considerable estate, possessed in his own right of sundry slaves, died, and on 13 Jan 1767 made his will, which since his death has been proven and recorded, and by his will he lent to his wife Shady Fitchett, during her widowhood, all the remaining of his moveable estate, after some few specific legacies; & at her death or marriage he gave all the moveable estate including negroes, to be equally divided among all his children, except his son Wm., which will more fully appear by reference to said will hereto annexed (not in chancery papers file). That besides the said Wm. who by said will is excepted from the said bequest, the said Salathiel Fitchett Senr left the following children: Clara Trower Fitchett & Shady, Sinah & Annaritta Fitchett, Salathiel, Thomas, Jonathan & Severn Fitchett & also his wife then pregnant with his son Daniel Fitchett. Shady Fitchett the widow of Salathiel the testator, took the slaves under the bequest to her and lately died on 21 March 1804, leaving of the slaves aforesaid, a negro man named Peter. That slave Peter now belongs equally to your orators & oratrixes undivided, to the children of the said Salathiel Fitchett Senr, now living and the representatives of those deceased, except William, according to the limitation in the said will, of the said slaves, after the widowhood of the said widow. That the children of Salathiel Fitchett Senr, there are now living Jonathan, Shady the wife of Wm. J. Young, Sinah the wife of Crippen Taylor & Clara Trower, now Clara Trower Davis. Salathiel Fitchett the son of the testator is dead, some time since, leaving children: Michael Fitchett, Elizabeth the wife of Mathias Taylor, Shady Fitchett, & Peggy the wife of Thomas Newton. That Thomas Fitchett, the son of Salathiel the testator, is also dead, leaving children John and Thomas B. Fitchett. That Daniel Fitchett is also dead living a child Shady Fitchett. That Annaritta is also dead leaving a child Betsy Taylor & that Severn Fitchett is also dead leaving children Peggy & Nancy Lemmon Fitchett, that Jonathan is entitled to 1/9 part of the slaves; the said Wm. J. Young & Shady his wife in right of Shady is entitled to 1/9 part; Crippen Taylor & Sinah his wife in right of Sinah to 1/9 part; Clara Trower Davis to 1/9 part; Michael Fitchett, Mathias Taylor & Elizabeth his wife in right of Eliza, Shady Fitchett & Thomas Newton & Peggy his wife in right of Peggy to 1/9 part; John & Thomas B. Fitchett to 1/9 part; Shady Fitchett, daughter of Daniel to 1/9 part; Betsy Taylor to 1/9 part and Peggy & Nancy Lemmon Fitchett to 1/9 part. Your orators & oratrixes further show that it would be the interest of the parties to have the slaves sold and the money arising from the sale to be divided among them according to their respective interests therein. That Betsy Taylor, Peggy H. Fitchett & Nancy L. Fitchett being infants underage cannot consent to a sale & division thereof nor can the same be effected in any way save only by the aid of the court in chancery. Therefore a sale & division may be decreed according to the respective rights of the said parties may it please the court to grant the "Com:W. writ of Spa" to the said Wm. J. Young & Shady his wife, Crippen Taylor & Sinah his wife, Betsy Taylor, Peggy H. Fitchett and Nancy Lemmnon Fitchett to be directed commanding them & each & every of them that on a certain day and under a certain pain therein to be limited and inserted they be & appear &c. Fitchett, infants by Zadoc Nock their guardian specially appointed to defend this suit, to the bill of Complaint of Wm. J. Young & wife &c. The defendants' answer to the bill is that they cannot gainsay the truth of the matter stated in the bill, that they have no objection to a sale of slave Peter & a division of the money arising therefrom among the parties and submit to such decree in principles and consistent with equity & right. Bayly, age 3 (born 1847). This household was listed between households headed by Walter Wesssells, age 48 and Solomon J. Small, age 48..1 |
Biography* | 1851 | Since Elizabeth Wessells (HH#979) was living next door to Walter Wessells (HH#978) in the 1850 census, they are assumed to have been siblings. Alfred F. Wessells listed his parents as Dan'l and Eliz'th Wessels on his 1855 marriage record, although he was not living with his mother Betsy in the 1850 Census, but with William Kelly. There was a Daniel Boston, unmarried and age 66 only 3 houses from her in the 1850 Census. Margaret Jane Wessells, who married John W. Linton in 1853 and Susan E. Wessells, who married Jesse T. Miles in 1868 both listed Betsy Wessells as their mother on their marriage records and a father was not listed. A Daniel Wessells of this period has not been found in Acc Co records. It is assumed that Alfred, Margaret, Susan and William (who was listed with his mother in the 1850 Census) were sibblings. Margaret Wessells is shown in the 1850 Census, age 14, living with Elijah Kelly. Margaret, age 22 (bc 1838), is shown as married to John Linton in the 1860 Census, but Susan could not be located in the 1860 Census. Susan is shown in the 1880 Census, age 32 (bc 1848), as the wife of Jesse Tho. Miles on Saxis. |

Tully Wise Fisher1
M, b. circa 1787, d. 1852
Birth* | circa 1787 | Tully was born circa 1787 at Accomack Co, VA. The range of Tully's possible birth year from census records are as follows: he is assumed to have been the 10-16 year old male in the household of George Christopher, husband of Susanna Fisher, in 1800, born 1784-1790; 1810, born 1785-1795; 1820, born 1775-1795; 1830, born 1780-1790; 1840, born 1780-1790; 20 Aug 1850, age 63, born 1787. The key census here is 1810 and 1850. 1810 shows the controlling earliest year as 1785 and the latest year in several census is 1790. Since there is very good correlation among all these census, there is no reason to doubt the 1850 census, which shows he was born in 1787. It should also be noted that older persons almost always over estimated their age, which supports the assumption that he was not born before 1787..2 |

Anecdote* | 1786 | Whitelaw's A126G is called the Bloxom House. The gambrel-roof house originally had been build in two sections, each having an outside brick end, and stood about 100 yards back from its present location. In the north end was a brick marked 1786 and in the south end other bricks marked WB, HB, AP 3, 1831, so the older part must have been started at least by Richard Bloxom in the year of his death, and the newer during the ownership of William and Hetty Bloxom. In 1934 the brick ends were torn down and the house moved to its present site, but the marked bricks were carefully preserved and set in the new foundations at their respective ends. The present center cross hall was a pat of the earlier construction, and is paneled under the stairs, and the doors are made of wide beaded boards set vertically. In the newer sections are large cupboards with solid doors, but they seem to be the only original woodwork worth noting in either part.5 |

Thomas Simpson Sr.
M, b. circa 1660, d. January 1726
Birth* | circa 1660 | Thomas was born circa 1660. |
Marriage* | circa 1680 | He married (-----) (-----) circa 1680. |
Tithable list* | 1685 | Thomas was on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1685. He was listed in Capt. John Wallop's Precincts as Tho. Simpson with 3 tithes. In 1686 he was listed in Major Bowman's Precincts with 3 tithes. This was apparently not a relocation on his part, but a subdivision of Capt. Wallop's Precincts as most of the others in Major Bowman's Precincts were also in Capt. Wallop's Precincts the prior year. In 1687 he was listed in Capt. Hill's Precincts with 4 tithes. Being on Capt. Hill's list was probably the result of a relocation as many of his neighbors, like Roger Miles and Richard Bundick, were still on Capt. Wallop's list. In 1688 he was listed again in Capt. Hill's Precincts with 5 tithes, but in 1689 he was back on Major Bowman's list, again with 5 tithes. In 1690 he was still on Major Bowman's list, but with only 3 tithes. In 1691 he was back on Capt. Wallop's list, again with 3 tithes. In 1692 he was on Mr. Jo. Robinson's list with only 1 tithe. He was not on any list in 1693, but on Mr. Ed. Custis's list in 1694 with only 1 tithe. This did not reflect a relocation as many of his past neighbors, like Roger Miles and Richard Bundick were on this same list. He was again on Mr. Ed. Custis's list in 1695 with only 1 tithe. During this 10 year period (1685-1695), he was the only Simpson listed. The fact that the tithes started at 3, then increased to 5 and then dropped to 1 can be misleading. Since tithes were to represent males age 16 and up in good health (able to work), either sons, lives-ins, or slaves, its not possible to determine the ages of his sons from these listing, other than to presume none of them had reached the age of 16 by 1695. Therefore, his oldest son could not have been born before 1680..1 |
Land bought* | 1689 | Thomas bought land in 1689 at Accomack Co, VA. He bought the Francis Johnson half of Whitelaw's tract A104, which is south-east of the present town of Parksley, from Francis Johnson, Negro. In 1708 Thomas and Sarah Parker sold the other half of tract A104 to Thomas Simpson, who thus became possessed of the whole tract. In 1726 he bequeathed the land as follows: to his son Thomas, 225 acres which formed the southwestern part and included the strip extending to the highway below tract A103; to his son John, 200 acres which he called the home plantation, lying above Thomas's part and extending up to the crossroad; and to son William, 50 acres which he also called a part of the home plantation..2 |
Was Living | 20 October 1689 | Thomas was living on 20 October 1689 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Adam Michael left to his kinsman Henry Custis (son of his brother John Custis) 1,000 acres at 'Matomkin' in Accomack Co, whereon Thomas Simson now lives. This was Whitelaw's tract A94, which is north-east of the present day town of Accomac..3 |
Land gave* | 1720 | Thomas deeded land as a gift in 1720 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Thomas gave 200 acres of Whitelaw's tract A114, which he acquired from William and Margaret Darter, to his son William. The land comprised all of the extension at the southeast corner of the tract and lay between the present main road in Parksley and the head northern branch of Hunting Creek, which later became known as the Parish Branch..4 |
Will* | 6 January 1726 | He made a will on 6 January 1726 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Thomas 'Simson' 225 acres purchased of Thomas Parker, also 50 acres purchased of Peter Claywell. To son William 'Simson' 200 acres purchased of William Darter, also 50 acres where I now live, also 112 and 1/2 acres of marsh. To son John 'Simson' 200 acres where I now live, also 112 and 1/2 acres of marsh. Daughter Sarah 'Simson'. Land inherited* | 10 February 1798 | Stephen (of Constable Tho) Hickman inherited land on 10 February 1798 at tract A116, Rue, Accomack Co, VA. Edward Hickman's children were named in the division of his land in settling his estate. The northern 56 acres was divided into 3 portions, as was the southern 50 acre strip. Son Richard received 17 1/2 acres of the 56 acres, son George received 18 1/2 acres of the 56 acres, and Stephen & Robert Hickman jointly received 20 acres of the 56 acres and it is assumed they were the sons of a dec'd child who had died before Edward. The 56 acres that were divided into these 3 tracts eventually became owned by Zepporah Ann Hickman Morten, seemingly the orphan daughter of Richard Hickman and were sold by her and her husband Thomas Morten of Somersette County, New Jersey, to James Rew of Accomack County in 1830 (Acc Deeds 1828-1830, p. 446). Henry Hickman received 15 acres of the southern 50 acre tract and the deed names his wife Scissey Hickman. This was probably Lissa Bayly that Henry is recorded as marrying in 1789. Thomas Hickman received 16 acres of the southern 50 acre tract and Dennis Hickman received the remaining acres of the southern 50 acre tract although his deed is not included with the 5 recorded in the division of 1798. Dennis & wife Bridget signed the other deeds and the next year (1799) they made a deed selling his brother Thomas Hickman's 18 1/2 acres for 55 pounds "The whole that fell to him by the death of his father" (Acc District Court Wills & Deeds, 1789-1799, p. 445). In 1806 Dennis and Bridget signed another deed selling Thomas (of Edward) the 3 acres of land that was Dennis' share of his late brother Henry Hickman's land.4 |
