Death* | 15 October 1972 | He died on 15 October 1972 at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, Chester Co, PA. Mr. Roland F. Marshall, 71, of Accomac died in Chester County Hospital, West Chester, PA, Sunday evening October 15. He was born at Onancock and was the son of Jefferson Marshall and Mrs. Alice Smith Marshall and his wife was Mrs. Lillian Elliott Marshall. He was E.I. Dupont de Nemours Co. Executive for thirty-seven years, retiring several years ago. Mr. Marshall was a member of Drummondtown Methodist Church, was Lay Leader of the Church and served on the Nominating Committee, Finance Committee and Pastorial Relations Committee of that church. He was also a very active member of the Accomack-Northampton Camp of Gideons International and was a member of DuPont Lodge No. 29 A.F. & A.M. and Delaware Consistory. Besides his wife, Mr. Marshall is survived by a son Mr. Calvin Marshall of New Castle, Del; a daughter Mrs. Coates Coleman of West Chester, PA, five grandchildren, Miss Debbie Marshall and John Marshall of New Castle, Del., John, Tommy and David Coleman of West Chester, Pa; three sissters, Mrs. Winnie Lewis of Keyport, NJ, Mrs. Ruby Taylor of Lee Mont and Mrs. Charles Stucke of San Jose, Calif; and a brother, Mr. Otho Marshall of Lee Mont. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 19 at Drummondtown Methodist Church, at 2:00 pm conducted by his pastor, Rev. Raymond P. Sharp and interment will be in the Parksley Cemetery. Arrangements by the Lilliston Funeral Home, Accomac. The following letter was attached to his obituary - Dear Richard, I don't know if you have ever seen the obituary of your Uncle Roland. he was a self made man and very religious; and I'm sure it was his strong faith that gave him strength. Prior to working for DuPont he was a laborer on the P.R.R. in Cape Charles. Mother went to Newport News to live with Jeff Davis Marshall and Alice to have me as there were no hospitals on the Eastern Shore at that time & he could get free passess from the P.R.R. Dad worked his way thru Goldey Beacon Business College where he graduated and attended LaSalle University for a very short period, but he had to drop out for lack of funds. He went to work for Dupont Co and became an auditor & while we were growing up traveled all over the country. It must have been tough on Mom being away from home so much. During WWII and the lend-base program he became involved with Dupont's making smokeless powder plants for the government. It wasn't until after the war that we learned he had become involved in the Manhatton Project and Dupont making the first atomic bomb. That's an interesting story I'll have to tell you sometime. He retired in Accomac & was very supportive of the church. Its the only time I've ever seen a minister weep in the pulpit as he gave Dad's funeral service.3 |
