Obituary* | 21 March 1899 | His obituary was published on 21 March 1899. Mr. Edward Darby died yesterday afternoon at the residence of his granddaughter, Mrs. Crittenden Walker, near Laytonsville, Montgomery County, Maryland, He was in his ninety-fifth year and up to a few weeks ago had enjoyed exceptionally good health. He was one of the oldest residents of this city. Mr. Darby was of English descent and was reared near Sandy Springs, Maryland, He was the fourth in a family of thirteen children and several of his brothers and sisters survive him. He went west, as the state of Ohio was then called, in 1831, but returned to the District a few years later. He occupied Analostan Island and also had charge of the farm comprising what is now Columbia Heights. During the war he was a farmer near Rockville. He leaves four sons and two daughters - Edward Darby of Virginia, Rizur W. Darby, Rufus H. Darby and George W. Darby of this city, Mrs. William H. Coomes and Miss Susan C. Darby of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Twenty-one grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive him. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at Oak Hill Cemetery. Private, 8th Co., Lower Bn., Militia, Sept 1777 (Ref:M-200, T-5:51). Invalid (disability) pension commenced in 1789. On May 27, 1815, he also applied for pension (S25481) at Baltimore, MD, and applied again on July 12, 1825, aged about 66 (another source states his age as 78 or 79), in Washington, DC, stating he enlisted in 1779 and served in the 7th Maryland Line. Affidavit by Richard Anderson in Montgomery County, Maryland, on May 3, 1825, stated that James White, of the Maryland Line, enlisted for the duration, was wounded in the arm at the second Battle of Camden on April 25, 1781, and was furloughed thereafter. James died Oct 21, 1829, and in 1830 the Treasurer of Maryland was directed to pay to Henry Harding for the use of Priscilla White, widow of the late James White, the balance of $23.33 balance due him at his death. Anecdote* | | James White Ward's usage of duel surnames (White, Ward), have never really been proven as to why he used both. There are those who believe that his mother Mary White remarried a Ward after the death of his father. And that, in order to inherit land from his step-father, he had to use and retain the use of the surname Ward.1 |
