Letter named in*26 May 1930She was named in a letter on 26 May 1930 at Cheriton, Northampton Co, VA. My dear Mrs. Dicks:
Please accept my apologies for not writing you earlier. The Society for the "Preservation of Virginia Antiquities" has given me a space in the Jamestown Church for the Savage tablet, 22 x 32, the same size as John Rolfe's.
Walton in Richmond charges $200 for the tablet with the laurel design border, $65.00 for the coat of arms, and $10.00 for installing the tablet.
Henry Savage, Professor of English at Princeton College has written the inscription. Upon receiving the drawing made by Walton, I shall send it to you for your approval when you can send me your promised $25.00. If I could only get $25.00 from eleven descendants it could be put up in time for next year's Virginia tourists to see it.
But I have an idea I shall have difficulty in getting the descendants worked up to your enthusiasm. The Philadelphia branch are all enthusiastic. I visited them last fall at Chestnut Hill. On of them has come to the Eastern Shore and bought her summer home on Cherrystone Creek, the land that once belonged to Obedience Robins. She is really in love with the land of her ancestors. Mrs. George Willing is her name.
I will submit the cut of the tablet to you as soon as it comes.
Very sincerely, (signed) Kate Savage.
Note: Pheribee Savage married Col. Francis Pugh, 1722. Their oldest child named Thomas for her father Thomas Savage and her grandfather Thomas Harmanson, is Lt. Col. Thomas Pugh, member of the North Carolina Constitution Convention and ancestor of all the Louisiana Pughs. We are thus not only Colonial Dames, Sons and Daughters of the Revolution but are also entitled to join the Society of Founders of the United States.7

Birth*1929Katherine Virginia Clay was born in 1929 at Dinwiddie, VA.1
Married Name14 March 1952 As of 14 March 1952,her married name was Savage.
Obituary - Dau's*2 September 2015She was named in her daugher's obituary on 2 September 2015 at Cape Charles, Northampton Co, VA. Ms. Lenore Vaughan Savage, age 53, a resident of Cape Charles, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. A native of Cape Charles, she was the daughter of George Jacob Savage Jr. and Virginia Clay Savage of Cape Charles. She was a member of the Holmes Presbyterian Church and an avid supporter of the Cape Charles Historical Society. In addition to her parents, she is survived by two children, Lewis Kane Springer and his wife, Amanda Rain, of Sneads Ferry, NC and Joseph Reese Springer of Virginia Beach, VA; a brother Jake Savage and his wife Laura Leigh of Richmond, VA; a sister Kathy Fountaine and her husband Robert of Townsend; a granddaughter Lux Kenedi Springer of Sneads Ferry; and a number of nieces & nephews. As a mother, Virginia instilled in her children a trait that she followed during her lifetime, to pursue any passion we have, but to do it doggedly. She was a tough disciplinarian and as her children and cousins alike will tell you, when she raised her eyebrow, you knew you had done something wrong and that there would be consequences. As time went by, she nurtured and instilled these same values in her beloved grandchildren. A private family graveside service was held at Cape Charles Cemetery with Pastor Charlotte Elia officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cape Charles Historical Society, 814 Randolph Ave., Cape Charles, VA 23310, or Holmes Presbyterian Church, 22635 Bayview Circle, Cape Charles, VA 23310.1
Death*25 November 2020She died on 25 November 2020 at Cape Charles, Northampton Co, VA.3
Obituary30 November 2020Her obituary was published on 30 November 2020. Mrs. Virginia Clay Savage, 91, wife of George Jacob Savage Jr. and a resident of Cape Charles, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020, at their residence surrounded by her loving family. A native of Dinwiddie, Va., she was the daughter of the late Katherine Driver Clay. She was a laboratory technician, the family’s devoted matriarch, a lifelong volunteer in the community and an active member of Holmes Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kathy Fountaine, and her husband, Robert, of Townsend; a son, Jake Savage, and his wife, Laura Leigh, of Richmond, Va; a brother, Pat Clay, of Norfolk; five grandchildren, Michael Fountaine, Alexis Fountaine, Anna F. Jessup and her husband, Charlie, Kane Springer and his wife, Amanda, and Reese Springer; and two great-grandchildren, Kenedi Springer and Arlie Springer. She was predeceased by a daughter, Lenore Vaughan Savage; an infant son; a brother, Ed Clay; and a sister, Nancy C. Barefoot.
Virginia was an active person on many levels. She loved gardening and devoted time and energy designing and nurturing the gardens at her home. She was active in the Garden Club of the Eastern Shore for more than 40 years and was president at least once. She worked tirelessly to promote, organize, and arrange flowers for Garden Week on the Eastern Shore over many years. Virginia’s passion for flowers turned into a business with Joan Belote, arranging flowers for weddings and funerals. She was active in the Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital and was the first woman board member of the hospital. This passion for community healthcare resulted in her being the president of the Charity Ball and was named honorary chairperson many years later. The Charity Ball contributed money to the hospital. She was active in the Cape Charles Memorial Library. She was a founding member of the Cape Charles Historical Society in 1986 and served as an officer for many years. Virginia and George were passionate about preserving historical buildings and, accordingly, she was an early member of the Northampton Branch of the APVA.
